LBGTQ

So anyway, before I got distracted by the sex talk, I wanted to draw attention to some particularly offensive comments made by Republican State Senator Tom Woods of Oklahoma in the aftermath of Nex Benedict’s death. In a public forum.

“We are a Republican state – supermajority – in the House and Senate. I represent a constituency that doesn’t want that filth in Oklahoma.”

“We are a religious state and we are going to fight it to keep that filth out of the state of Oklahoma because we are a Christian state – we are a moral state. We want to lower taxes and let people be able to live and work and go to the faith they choose. We are a Republican state and I’m going to vote my district, and I’m going to vote my values, and we don’t want that in the state of Oklahoma.”

Ignorance -> Fear -> Intolerance -> Hate

That’s him on the left. Does he look the part or what?

Media Matters: The Moms for Liberty 60 Minutes interview was such a disaster that their allies are scrambling to do damage control

https://www.mediamatters.org/moms-liberty/moms-liberty-60-minutes-interview-was-such-disaster-their-allies-are-scrambling-do

Gives a recap of the interview, more thorough than mine. Then this:

Quote

Pelley wasn’t asking hardball questions, but Justice and Descovich were clearly unprepared for even the slightest bit of pushback. Unsurprisingly, right-wing media are already scrambling to vilify 60 Minutes and conduct damage control for Moms for Liberty.

Justice appeared on Steve Bannon’s War Room the day after the interview aired and accused Pelley of dishonestly editing the segment. Justice then spoke with Fox News Digital, claiming that the interview was “heavily edited” and they were “censored” by CBS News. Newsmax host Rob Schmitt said 60 Minutes was “advocating for the LGBTQ agenda in schools” and described the segment as “biased.” BlazeTV’s The Steve Deace Show jumped to defend Moms for Liberty’s use of “groomer.” Megyn Kelly — who previously hosted a Moms for Liberty fundraiser  blastedPelley for the interview, saying he “failed America’s children'” and calling him “disgusting.”

Despite these protests from right-wing media, 60 Minutes showed that it took minimal prodding for Pelley to unmask Moms for Liberty’s façade and expose the group's strategy for what it is — loudly repeating empty talking points about right-wing boogeymen like “critical race theory” or accusations of “groomers” in schools, all intentionally crafted to mobilize its extremist base. However, the illusion is shattered when its leaders are pressed for details because their boogeymen aren’t real.

Putting this here, but the point could also be made in the education thread... or the mass shooting thread.

Male teacher at Hebron wears dress... gets suspended, but is found to have not violated any policy. Resigns following death threats.

Thus juxtaposed to the Uvalde police having zero accountability for their inaction explains exactly where we are when it comes to treatment of LGBTQ, teachers, and police.

JK Rowling has earned a reputation over the last few years as being a transphobe. The acronym TERF stands for Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminism.

Here, she is expressing doubt that transfolk were also victims of the holocaust, and she's getting called out on it.

The Holocaust was predominately genocide against Jews, but it actually was broader than that and included disabled, LGBTQ people (and our own LGBTQ whitewashing forgot trans people in many facets of LGBTQ discrimination over the years), non-Aryan races / nationalities, etc.

so to deny Nazi extermination against trans people (as minor as it was compared to Jews) is still a form of holocaust denial.

interesting fact the upside down pink triangle that is now (or recently was as now we’ve moved to variations of rainbow flags) a symbol of queer folk was a symbol of the nazis for lgbtq people. They made (mostly) gay men  but also trans women and cross dressers to wear a pink triangle patch for identification in camps.

berlin was way ahead of its time in terms of trans people existing and living and even a movement for trans rights. Nazis crushed that of course. So yeah the persecution and crimes against lgbtq folk in Nazi Germany were real.

So yes, she’s a holocaust denier.

So, the medical examiner's report says Nex Benedict died by suicide.  Very sad.

As someone who has struggled with depression, I know how all-encompassing it can be, but I'm a straight, white male, so I can't even imagine what it must be like for LBGTQ+.

Suicidal thoughts are suicidal thoughts. Queer or not. I appreciate the sentiment but if you have had issues with or still have depression thats a burden that doesn’t require comparison.

How much more difficult is it to find adequate mental health care as a trans person? I've been told it's much harder (granted it was nearly 10 years ago at this point), but I can't imagine things have changed for the better that much since.

Edit - first response is regular health care, mental health care discussed below —

Let me put it this way. I get my core trans care and meds from planned parenthood and I can’t find a primary care for anything else. Luckily my insurance is good - I have means - so I can go straight to a specialist. If I do, I either lie about being trans or I disclose and risk them refusing to treat me - mostly out of fear that the same rules of biology don’t apply to me. Which for the most part is stupid, human is human. But with little to no experience and no education, most doctors want to decline to help. So I usually say nothing.

I’ll probably kill myself before I have to have regular daily care like home health or assisted living unless I remain able to advocate for myself but most who can advocate for themselves live independently.

and I’m one of the lucky ones.

re mental health care — I transitioned at the end of the gatekeeper era but during the Obama “omfg he said transgender in the state of the union” period of trans acceptance - the golden year.

i didn’t mind the gate keeping, everyone wanted to help and i wanted to go slow. I also had a lot of resources and personal agency. I was scared shitless too so slow was fine, help was good. Lots of therapists getting into the game access was there if you had the means.

now? We have informed consent mostly so it’s easy to transition - in theory - but in terms of access to help I don’t know but it can’t be better.  I do expect trans care for adults to go the way of abortion care, constitutionally protected but practically eliminated through absurd regulation and liability.

https://www.kxan.com/lgbtq/attorney-general-ken-paxton-blocked-from-investigating-lgbtq-advocacy-group/

Quote

A Travis County judge made a decision Monday to keep blocking Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton from investigating an LGBTQ+ nonprofit that provides support to families with transgender children.

Judge Amy Clark Meachum issued a temporary injunction saying PFLAG Inc. would suffer “immediate and irreparable injury” if the organization had to hand over information with potentially sensitive information that identified its members to Paxton’s office. She also set a trial date for the case on June 10, signaling Monday that PFLAG “would likely prevail” at that time.

Quote

PFLAG received two civil investigative demands on Feb. 9 from the Attorney General’s Office to turn over documents, communications and information related to its work helping families in Texas with transgender children. Attorneys from the state said in court Monday these requests are related to an insurance fraud investigation they’re conducting into medical providers offering transition-related health care to minors despite Senate Bill 14, which banned it last year as an option in the state.

Another judge previously issued a temporary restraining order related to this matter.

Quote

The lawyers representing PFLAG argued in court they believed these investigative demands are “retaliation” for the organization being involved in two other lawsuits against the state, which are both currently on hold. Those are over Gov. Greg Abbott’s order for the state to investigate families with transgender kids for child abuse and the law that bans gender-affirming care for minors.

Attorneys from Paxton’s office said these civil demands are “not end-runs” to get information for these two other lawsuits. They even said they’re modifying their requests to specify their office does not want any membership lists or membership information from PFLAG. However, Judge Meachum still granted the temporary injunction.

Quote

The PFLAG lawyers said in court Monday these requests, though, had a “chilling effect” on how it operates in Texas. Aaron Ridings, an executive vice president for PFLAG, testified that the nonprofit already suffered a loss in volunteers and experienced a decrease in in-person meetings for its support groups throughout the state.

“They are concerned about being on the attorney general’s radar,” Ridings told Paxton’s lawyers during cross-examination.

Quote

After the hearing Monday, Lynley Egyes, the legal director for the Transgender Law Center, added, “This fear is having a real impact on people’s lives. People are scared to show up to meetings. People are scared to sign in and have their name in front of the Attorney General’s office, but luckily today we don’t have to worry about that, thankfully, with the temporary injunction that was granted.”

Lmao, Mildred is pretty tame as far as chosen names for trans people go.

I've lost track of the number of trans Leafs, Rivers, Siriuses, Jupiters, Lucifers, Mosses, Herculeses, Ramseses, Rains, etc etc that I've met while both working in queer healthcare and being a big gaymo myself

It's so fucking sickeningly sweet but it really suits her, and the joy that is written over her face when she hears her name spoken outloud really just ties the whole thing together

God knows the source of some of these old names.

The strangest trans name I've ever experienced was also my first.  She was my professor in the ACTLab at UT back in the early 90's so she was definitely a trailblazer.  Anyway, her name was Allucquére, which kinda sounded like "All Look Queer" to me, so I used to wonder if that's why she chose it.  Of course, most people just knew her as Sandy.

I am not a Mildred nor do I happen to know any personally but I see nothing wrong with it.

It means gentle strength and that seems rather charming if you ask me (not that anyone did but this is Surly). I did know a Walter in school, the only one I've ever known until a SIL gave one of her sons the name as his 'middle' name.

I find names kinda cool in general. They can be common or unique but each of us takes our name (or chooses it later) and makes it a part of us. We can be teased for it or admired or shortened or nicknamed (from our original name) but no matter what, it is us in all our messy complicated history of our time on this pale blue dot.
