Longhorn Network

TXs

I'm ready to apply. I may be the oldest intern in the history of LHN, but I'll focus on this preferred qualification "Historical knowledge of UT sports". Will have to sneak my kids in to perform "editing, screening and/or logging video".

I'm trying to cut expenses and I just can't justify what I'm paying for DirecTV. I'm mainly looking at Youtube TV as my replacement, which does not currently offer the Longhorn Network. (I know some other streaming services do.)

I guess my main question/complaint: why the fuck isn't the Longhorn Network available as a standalone subscription channel on something like the Roku platform, independently of whatever other shit I'm subscribed (or not) to? That would tremendously increase the availability and prospective revenue from subscribers. From a consumers' point of view, it seems crazy that my access to LHN is completely dictated by whether I'm a subscriber to some other cable or satellite provider. I know the "answer" is something along the lines of Big Telecom/ESPN/Disney/Spectrum/Whatever the fuck is trying to control access and leverage everything in their fucking favor, but I'm still going to complain about it.

I know the popular opinion around here is to hate LHN but it will suck when it is gone.

Goodbye to Texas Baseball home games and some of our non-conference basketball games.

*volleyball.....

we all think its pretty obvious it will be rolled into the SEC networks.   they may very well have an SEC EAST/ WEST channel. Yeah that sucks that we lose all our home baseball games being broadcast on TV, but ESPN is still on the hook to pay us at least $15M/yr for another 10 years or so.   So ESPN wont just ditch the entire channel, they will just rebrand it

I used to share this opinion until our center field camera operator with Parkinson’s put my eyes in a blender every home game this year.

SECN+ is the exact same thing with at least the same quality production value. Every game streaming with home team commentators.

But…but…Lowell Galindo!

Silver lining - the vast majority of our games will continue to be on some channel given ESPNs partnership with the SEC, including softball and volleyball.  I don't imagine they're going to want to replace Moreland and Swindell on home baseball broadcasts.  AND Lowell Galindo, if he wants to keep working for ESPN, will have to do other games.

I can do without the pre-game shows.  This is not going to be the tragedy that people seem to be making it out to be.  I mean fuck, they showed commercials instead of the Spring Game.  The LHN is the boring old fart of niche TV programming and was the giant flag planted in 2011 that proved UT didn't care about championships as much as money.  And everyone knew it.  We've sucked the last 10-11 years.  So, fuck the LHN; I'm ecstatic it's getting knifed.

This is pretty much where I am. The spring game felt like the last straw.

It's unfathomable to me how badly you have to screw up to make someone like me actively dislike a channel called "The Longhorn Network".

Ole Miss/Aggy guy in charge of LHN... 😋

Longhorn Network will be getting a new boss ... from Texas A&M

Greg Rajan, Staff writer     May 12, 2022

Longhorn Network apparently will not be a thing when Texas moves to the SEC, the Longhorns' athletic director hinted at this week.  Longhorn Network, the cable TV partnership between the University of Texas and ESPN, will have a new man in charge.

And he’s coming from Texas A&M, of all places.

ESPN on Thursday named Michael Thompson Jr., A&M’s deputy athletic director for external relations and business development, as its new vice president for programming and acquisitions. He will primarily be working on the company’s college network properties.

In his new role, Thompson will be running SEC Network and Longhorn Network. Thompson, who’s a Mississippi graduate and worked there before coming to A&M, will oversee all aspects of programming and scheduling for both channels.

The fact a Texas A&M official will be in charge of Longhorn Network is quite the plot twist when considering the channel’s history. Its announced launch in 2011 prompted then-A&M president Bowen Loftin to declared the Big 12 was in a state of “uncertainty.” Two months later, the Aggies announced they were leaving the conference for the SEC.

“The Longhorn Network was a blessing in disguise for us,” Loftin told the Houston Chronicle’s Brent Zwerneman in July 2021. “The A&M world was not unified about what to do in 2010. But the LHN changed everything. It went from 50-50 (percent) to 95-5. I thank Texas for catalyzing the sense that A&M had to do something, something bold and something that was really meant for A&M.”

Of course, Longhorn Network may be going the way of Big 12 signage on Texas’ campus with the Longhorns moving to the SEC no later than the 2025 football season.

At a “Texas Fight Tour” stop Wednesday in Dallas, UT athletic director Chris Del Conte hinted at the channel’s demise. He said Longhorn Network has been a “great partner” but that the university was ready to be a part of the SEC Network, which is based in Charlotte, N.C.

Del Conte also had to take to Twitter to walk back a comment he made referring to LHN as the “History Channel,” a running joke for years about the amount of football programming featuring successes of past decades, rather than anything recent.

The shame of it all was that it had the number one name in all of sports broadcasting backing it and the best it ever became was steamy shit. It literally broke up the conference for fear of the almighty power it might broker, but turned into a junior high announcement quality production with an overdose of crappy casino ads.

You need something other than a good time? Bret Michaels disagrees...

Over and over and over until you truly want to put a bullet in your TV

About the same. Would you watch the Alabama network channel with their volleyball and baseball team? No.

No, but if we had won like Alabama, there would have been year round football coverage and probably some really interesting content.

I am sure this will turn out well.......NOT !

I only watched the live sports so everything else is just fodder.

But now we will not have the following....

Football games versus teams like ULL etc.... (might be PPV)

Basketball games versus lesser opponents early in the season.

Home baseball games.

I am sure some of this will be covered but probably not all and that fucking sucks.

The thing I’ll miss the most about the LHN is the live radio broadcast of football games. Radio is always 4-5 seconds ahead of the action on TV, but this allowed you (assuming you had two DVRs) to run the audio through your speakers on a slight delay and listen to Craig Way instead of TV morons…

On the Big Ten Network I can watch Buckeye men and women’s basketball games, home and away. I can watch men’s baseball, wrestling, women’s softball, men and women’s hockey, men and women’s lacrosse, women’s field hockey, men and women’s gymnastics, men and women’s volleybal, and tennis, and soccer (which I don’t, but I can). I can watch swimming and diving. And you know what? There’s still time to show sports for other schools in the conference. (For some sports it’s just conference meets where multiple schools are represented.) 24 hrs a day gives you more time than one school can fill. It also gives time for original programs like The Journey which introduces you to different basketball or football players from various schools every week. I think that’s awesome. I’m interested in the other schools/teams in the conference. They could fill a Buckeye-only network with programming but it would be nowhere nearly as interesting.

Then there’s also the fact that the first live game broadcast on BTN was Appalachian State’s upset of Michigan in Ann Arbor. That was glorious and I wouldn’t have gotten to see it otherwise.

Yeah I can vouch for that from personal experience. My google fiber tv service ended a while back, and since then, I've been without LHN. It has indeed sucked. Esp for baseball.

I just want all my UT baseball games live on TV. If somehow a conference network can do that with virtually all the conference schools playing on the same days at roughly the same times then great. How does that work though?
