The McDonnell Aircraft Corp. developed the XF-85 Goblin "parasite" fighter to protect B-36 bombers flying far beyond the range of conventional escort fighters. The "parent" B-36 would carry the XF-85 within a bomb bay -- if enemy fighters appeared, the Goblin would be lowered on a trapeze and released to combat the attackers. Once the enemy had been driven away, the Goblin would return to the B-36, reattach to the trapeze, and be lifted back into the bomb bay.

I went down a shallow rabbit-hole.  a few good minutes of the goblin in action with decent commentary starting at 10:00 in this video.  more than a few belly landings in a salt-flat during the testing phase.

interesting from the video, "while in flight, the goblin was stable, easy to fly, and recoverable from spins."

If the enemy was sat in a Mig-15 and that little Goblin came at him, he’d probably die just out of laughter.

Do you have any idea how hard it would be for a Mig-15 to hit one of those little sumbitches using two 23 mm with 80 rounds per gun and a single 37 mm lobbing 40 rounds of  flaming tennis balls? Like swatting flies with a basketball.
