The McDonnell Aircraft Corp. developed the XF-85 Goblin "parasite" fighter to protect B-36 bombers flying far beyond the range of conventional escort fighters. The "parent" B-36 would carry the XF-85 within a bomb bay -- if enemy fighters appeared, the Goblin would be lowered on a trapeze and released to combat the attackers. Once the enemy had been driven away, the Goblin would return to the B-36, reattach to the trapeze, and be lifted back into the bomb bay.

Yeah, how would you like to be that guy?:

"Lieutenant Numbnuts, your job is to walk out into that open bomb bay, about 30,000 feet in the air, climb into this ungainly short range fighter with no landing gear, kill all enemies, and return to the mother ship for a hero's welcome home!"

"But sir, what if the mothership gets shot down?
"That's one too many quesitons Lieutenant.  Go fight win!"

I went down a shallow rabbit-hole.  a few good minutes of the goblin in action with decent commentary starting at 10:00 in this video.  more than a few belly landings in a salt-flat during the testing phase.

interesting from the video, "while in flight, the goblin was stable, easy to fly, and recoverable from spins."
