No surprise,  Texas Men's and Women's track and field both win Big 12 championships in Lubbutock tonight.  Neither ran the 4X400 meter relays.   Hook em Horns.  \m/

Really want an outdoor NC.  I don’t care if it’s men or women.

Grace Stark was injured at the SEC championships and is a scratch for the NCAA. That's a really big blow for Florida and probably the biggest competition for Texas.

These rankings likely changed based on the Stark injury. The West prelims are this week. Need to avoid any major injuries and to maximize numbers for nationals.

Another aggy is transferring to Texas in Teajha Badal. There's a poster on Texags (TaylorSwift13) that hates Floreal so this is hilarious.

Spoiler

Says a lot about Floreal that he needs to poach off of our and LSU's, and USC's roster… he can't develop.

Sounds like a good strategy. Poach a bunch of good runners off other rosters. This has nothing to do with development but more to do with Floreal willing to adapt to the transfer portal. It's working well for him.

An 8x AA and 2 time outdoor champ. Just keeping adding talent. USC transfer

The men's team is bringing in the best recruiting class in the country and it's not close.

So kickoff today? Over under at 1.5 national champs for a texas (counting men and women- not individuals)?

Let’s just win them both

We have the most entries in both men’s and women’s.

So many people are predicting that we win at least 1 on the NCs (several picking us to win both) that it’s making me nervous.

2 PR's on first 3 events for decathlete Neugebauer.  Nice start.

Based on this thread it was predicted Neugebauer would finish 3rd or 4th overall. He's in the lead through 3 events.

It also looks like the winner was predicted to be somebody from Georgia who is the biggest competition for Texas this weekend. Neugebauer winning the decathlon would be a big upset to start  this meet.

Any idea how many more points are to be awarded for the men?  Is this a big lead- are we over performing or underperforming expectations etc?

it is way too premature to have any reasonably certain estimation at this yet.  so far it is mostly prelims so the points are going to start hitting tomorrow.  we have a lot of qualified competitors so that's good for potential points but there's no way to predict where it's headed yet.  right now, we have 12 points. but most of the available points that we would expect to take aren't until tomorrow's events.  all the points right now are attributable to long jump, shot put, javelin, hammer, 10,000 meter, and pole vault.  there are still a shitload of points on the board and a long way to go.

current leaderboard:

1. Tennessee - 21 (won long jump, 4th in long jump, 8th in long jump)

2. Florida State - 16 (2nd and 3rd in long hump)

3. Princeton - 15 (1st and 4th in pole vault)

4. Texas - 12 (1st in shot put and scored in long jump)

5. Alabama - 11 (scored in a number of events but no wins)

6. Notre Dame - 10 (won 10,000 meter)

6. Pennsylvania - 10 (won javelin)

8. Southeast Missouri - 10 (won hammer competition)

9. Wichita - 9 (did well in javelin)

10. Penn State - 8

for men's the only thing today is to finish the decathlon.  guy from texas is currently sitting at 3rd after half the events.  we will know how many points he gets at the end of the day today.  if he can grab all ten points, that would be huge.

for tomorrow, after yesterday's prelims, we qualified guys in:

discus (middle of the pack in qualifying)

4x100 relay (though barely made it with not great time)

4x400 relay (qualified with fastest time)

200m (our guy qualified with fastest time)

400m (our guy qualified with third fastest time)

800m (barely made it in)

triple jump (middle of the pack)

decathlon (currently in 3rd)

but we only qualified one guy/team for each so the max number of points remaining on the board for us is 80 (which obviously we won't be close to getting).  looking at the spread of teams across the events, i think the winner this year probably finishes with 50ish total (swag).  thus, we need to average finishing in the top half of every event.  winning a couple of them would be big.

tennessee only qualified 4x100, triple jump, and 100m for friday.  currently sitting 11th in deca.  so not a lot of potential points remaining for them.

florida state qualified in 5000m (2 guys) and 110m hurdles so they are almost done.

princeton qualified in high jump, steeplechase, discus, and 1500m.  they are actually a problem for us believe it or not.

biggest perceived competition is florida and georgia.

florida qualified guys in: 4x100, 100m, 200m, and 400m.

georgia actually didn't do that great yesterday.  qualified guys in high jump (likely winner, blew away qualifying), 100m, 200m, and 400m.  currently sitting 2nd in deca.

tldr: we have a lot of potential points on the board for men's with qualifiers in 8 events with a solid chance of winning 3 of those (200, 4x400, deca) and definite scoring in others.  florida only has 4 events, georgia has 5., tennessee has 4, fsu has 2.

If Leo can win the decathlon that’d be huge. I’ll settle for a top 3 finish though. Bottom line is you just want points no matter how you get them.

on the women's side which starts today...we have qualifiers in the following events:

1) heptathlon (ranked 2)

2) 4x100 relay (1 team ranked 1)

3) 100m (3 who are ranked 1, 6, and 13)

4) long jump (2 who are ranked 3 and 8 )

5) 400m (2 who are ranked 3 and 4)

6) 800m (ranked 8 )

7) 400m hurdles (ranked 18)

8 ) shot put (ranked 20)

9) 200m (3 who are ranked 3, 4, and 13)

10) 4x400 relay (1 team ranked 4)

so they should have some points at the end of the day today from long jump.  possibly shot put but it is an outside shot.  but when they start racing down the track in the glamour events on saturday, they should start piling up some points with a decent chance to take it all.  arkansas, lsu, florida, agros, and oregon all have shitloads of athletes too.  slightly more focus on how it might look after today's events and prelims but like the men, the top teams are all going to be going at it in the big ones on saturday.

It wasn't a great semifinals for Georgia who some had as the favorites. One of their top athletes in the decathlon was injured and he was going to finish near the top. Their 4X4 relay team didn't qualify for the finals either. They will need huge races in the finals out of Boling.

This was considered a Georgia and Texas battle but now it looks more like a Florida and Texas battle with Georgia having an outside chance.

Texas didn't hurt or help themselves in the semifinals. They were always going to need a couple high scorers in finals. The women's side has a better chance of getting more entries into the finals.

Leo finishing 1st or 2nd in the decathlon would be huge for Texas.

That was not expected and Georgia was expected to finish with 2 ahead of Leo. This will be a close team finish so swinging a few points in this event would be significant.

Leo in good shape today.  Dude has like 5 PRs.  Way to show out, fella!

he's sitting in first by 104 points (2nd is georgia's guy) with pole vault, javelin, and 1500m left.

florida doesn't have anyone in this so this would really give us a leg up on them going into tomorrow if he could close it out.  would also be pretty big vis-a-vis georgia's chances of beating us if he grabbed more points than their guy.

edit: actually, looks like leo and kyle are both done with pv and they both got the same height so really just javelin and 1500m left.

This will be the event that loses the meet for Georgia if Leo finishes in 1st or 2nd. Georgia also had another athlete in the decathlon that was going to finish in the top 3 or 4 before he was injured.
