Today and tomorrow is the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet at the Univ. of Kentucky (Louisville, KY) and the athletes scheduled to appear are at this link:

https://live.dcracetiming.com/meets/29587/teams/735631

In addition, declathlete Leo Neugebauer has been named to the Bowerman Preseason Watch List. He was a finalist for the award last season. Womens' team member and field even specialist (long & triple jumps) Ackelia Smith has also been named to the Preseason Watch List.

I think we have a shot at a national title this year on the men's side.

It's a weirdly constructed team in that we don't have many dominant sprinters but we can get big points out of the other events. We won the indoor national title with only 47 points in '22 and I think the scoring will be even more spread out this year.

If they can find a way to get to 35 points a national title might be in reach.

We probably have the best middle distance team in the country. Throw in Neugebauer and that gives you a very good baseline for scoring at the NCAA championships.

It would not surprise me if this team doesn't win the Big 12 championship and then wins a national title. That's very much in play with this roster.

Are you referring to Indoor or Outdoor? I'm not sure how fleshed out the rest of their squad is, but Texas Tech has some flyers on their men's team. Def give the nod to Texas in the field events except maybe vault? Still a little early to figure it all out, IMO but I wish all the athletes good meets and no injuries. Some of the best squads in the nation in this state.

Definitely but I really like the scoring potential for Texas at the Indoor NCAA Championships.

Neugebauer will be favored to finish 1st or 2nd in the hept, Texas has a couple runners in the 800 that can place near the top, Texas should have a strong DMR team, and potential for scoring in several other events.

Sam Hurley had a great high jump at the meet--he's second on the indoor list right now. And Lindhorst just ran a pretty good 800 as well. They do need to make sure all the relays are scoring points; that's the bread and butter right there. On the women's side, Arkansas is an early leader, but the champs aren't until March so we'll see how it shakes out. Texas is traveling to Boston U for a meet at the end of the month, and while it isn't at the same track, it seems like a good plan as a test run.

Today and tomorrow, the men and women are at the Boston College Eagle Elite Invitational. Should be a good meet with the following teams slated to run:

Boston College, UConn, Florida Atlantic, Harvard, Louisville, NC State, UNC, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Texas, UCLA, USC, Villanova, and Wake Forest

Men's entries in various events; I didn't include everyone, mostly if they have PRs in the top places...sorry if I mis-spelled any names.

60m: Marcellus Moore/Nolton Shelvin/John Rutledge

200m: Almond Small/Marcellus Moore/John Rutledge/Nolton Shelvin

400m: Elijah Mosely/Logan Popelka/Caleb Hulbin/Chris Brinkley

800m: Cole Lindhorst/Daniel Howells

5000m: Haftu Knight

60m Hurdles: Kendrick Smallwood/Kody Blackwood

4X400m Relay: Texas A/B/C

DMR: Texas A

HJ: Dylan Lineberger

PV: Conner Boenig

LJ: Kelsey Daniel/Solomon Washington/Jathan Belaire

TJ: Kelsey Daniel/Solomon Washington

Shot: Patrick Piperi/Michael Pinones

Weight Throw: Jeremiah Nubbe

I didn't include the mile or 3000m entries.

This meet ought to settle some things with regard to where athletes are versus where they'd like to be. Moore has been running quite well, the 400 meter relay is going head to head with USC and UCLA and yet the seed times seem ambitious. We'll see I guess.

I'll post the women's team in the next post to follow.

I should add that Ackelia Smith (Bowerman Watch List 2024) jumped at last weekend's meet in New Mexico. Did quite well and is leading the qualifying list. Not listed for the meet in Boston. Same with Leo Neugebauer and the hep; performed well last weekend and the Boston meet doesn't offer.

There are 3 field events and four running events left and I'll post those later.

In the current national rankings, the Texas men are ranked fourth behind Texas Tech, Northern Arizona, and Arkansas. The Texas Women are ranked fourth as well behind Arkansas, Florida, and Oregon. Things are beginning to take shape. The men jumped 3 spots while the women jumped 14. Texas A&M has been moving up as well, their men are ranked 10th, and their women's team is 5th behind UT.

The last date for non conf. qualifying is Feb 25 (I think?) and UT has at least one more regular season meet prior to that. Qualifiers are usually listed within a couple of days after the final date with the finalized start list posted the first week of March.

Men's 4x400m Relay AKA 1600m Relay: Texas A (Popelka, Mosely, Rutledge, Herron) (2) 3:03.93; Texas B (Brinkley, Washington, Smallwood, Hulbin) (5) 3:10.18; Texas C (Belaire, Shelvin, Small, Moore) (8) 3:13.29 First Place: USC (Braun, Blockberger, Cumberbatch, Jones) 3:03.14

Of note, to make the indoor champs, the top 16 for each event (top 12 for relay) are selected with a tie-breaking process. Everybody is trying to get those numbers right now. Best of luck to all the athletes. Cross Country, indoor, and outdoor is a pretty tough slate for student athletes and this is an Olympic year (Paris 2024)

The Men's 4X400 Relay mentioned above broke a school record yesterday with their time of 3:03.93.

It is currently the 6th fastest time in the nation (indoor) behind teams from ASU, Florida, USC, Alabama, and A&M. (*Fastest time indoors this year is 3:02.73). The USC time was set at the same meet where UT broke their record so keep an eye out for the indoor champs. Next meet on tap is the Alex Wilson Invite at Notre Dame, followed by the Big 12 Indoor Championship in Lubbock.

*Indoor collegiate record is 3:00.77 set by USC (Zack Shinnick/Rai Benjamin/Ricky Morgan/Michael Norman) in College Station (3/10/18) at the Div I Indoor Championships. I was there and it was amazing to watch. I haven't had a chance to visit their new facility in CS, but it's supposed to be pretty nice.

We're up to #3 in the rankings on the men's side. I still think we have a legit shot at a national title in indoor. Several schools are going to split points in the sprint events while we stack points in mid-distance/field events.

There is definitely a chance at the title (men's). I was glancing over other teams and event points and again, that Tech team head to head with Texas would place higher than the Longhorns, but as you say the field expands at nationals and can throw a spanner in the works. NAU doesn't have the breadth so I am going to be surprised if they can hold on to second or even third by the end of the season (but, don't count them out, they are a tricky bunch in those distance races). That gives Texas,  Florida, and even Arkansas the opportunity to move up. If Leo N competes in both the hept and the long jump, that's potentially two first place point totals right there.  Texas' ranking can fluctuate by several spots up or down over the next three weeks (as can other top teams) and then win the title.

For the women's teams, Arkansas is just so dominant right now.

Although it was on the schedule, UT did not send any athletes to the Arkansas Qualifier meet this Saturday (AFAIK). Upcoming-- the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Lubbock Feb 23/24.

This weekend  the USA Indoor Championships were held in Albuquerque, NM. I may have omitted some alums, it was a quick run through as I wasn't able to watch due to a conflicting event. These two events caught my eye as the marks are currently WL.

Men:

Shotput- Ryan Crouser (1) 22.8m/74' 9 3/4"; Tripp Piperi (4) 20.43m/67' 0 1/2"

Women:

Long Jump- Tara Davis-Woodhall (1) 7.18m/23' 6 3/4"

USTFCCCA Rankings for this week (#5) have Texas slipping a little down a few spots to #7 for the men and the women dropping one spot, also to #7. Of note, the Conference ranking has the Texas men with a 14 point edge over Texas Tech. The women's conference championship they've got scored a lot closer, with BYU getting the edge at #1 but only by 3 points (these numbers are approximate, I didn't bother with rounding). As was discussed upthread, both teams have a shot at a national title--much more of a reach for the women due to dominant Arkansas, but every event matters. After the various conference champs are concluded, it will be a good gauge as to how things may shake out coast to coast.

Men's Ranking Indoor T&F

1) NAU

2) Texas Tech

3) Arkansas

4) USC

5) Washington

6) Florida

7) Texas

8 ) Nebraska

9) Alabama

10) Wisconsin

Women's Ranking Indoor T&F

1) Arkansas

2) Florida

4) Oregon

Big 12 Indoor Championships begin tomorrow in Lubbock. Start lists not yet available, but the meet will be airing both Friday (10 AM CST) and Saturday (11 AM CST) on Big12Now on ESPN+ for those that would like to watch w/o going to Lubbock. (If you do care to attend in person, tickets are $10 per day for general admission.)

Per usual the pentathlon and heptathlon will open the meet Friday morning followed by running/field events in the afternoon going into the evening. @Rickylovesweed--the DMR final is the last event on Friday, women followed by men. BYU and Okla State have faster squad times for the DMR than Texas (men) currently, but w/o knowing who is running what, hard to say how that's going to go. Hopefully exciting; I enjoy a good relay.

Once the start lists are out, I may try and post the Longhorns competing.

Some results from the Big Twelve Indoor Champs meet thus far....

The pentathlon and heptathlon began this morning and several of those events have concluded.

Women's Pentathlon

60m Hurdles: Kristine Blazevica (1) 8.42 (1035 pts). Blazevica was in Heat 5.

High Jump: Kristine Blazevica (6) 1.71m/5' 7 1/4" (867 pts) Angel Richmore of OU  placed first--1.80m/5' 10 3/4" (978 pts)

Blazevica currently has 1902 points and is fourth overall.

Men's Heptathlon

60m: Brock Lewis (12) 7.31 (775 pts)  Grant Levesque of Houston placed first--6.70 (992 pts)

Long Jump: Brock Lewis (9) 6.66m/21' 10 1/4" (734 pts). Grant Levesque of Houston placed first--7.03m/23' 0 3/4" (821 pts)

Lewis totaled 1509 points after that event for eleventh place.

Shot Put: Brock Lewis (11) 11.10/36' 5" (552 pts). Grant Levesque of Houston placed first--14.08m/46' 2 1/2" (733 pts)

Lewis currently has 2061 points and is in twelfth  place.

The women's shot put results are not yet final, but it looks like Blazevica may be second (to Richmore of OU) in the overall pentathlon points when that event is concluded.

Women's Pentathlon

Shot Put: Kristine Blazevica (4) 12.91m/42' 4 1/4" (721 pts). Urte Bacianskaite of Kansas State placed first--15.42m/50' 7 1/4" (889 pts).

Blazevica's point total is now 2623. The long jump is in progress so the overall standings are a bit messy right now. She will be in the top three most likely.

**Right now she is 57 points behind Richmore of OU for the overall title.** Hook 'em!

Men's Heptathlon

High Jump: Brock Lewis (12) 1.81m/5' 11 3/4" (636 pts). Phillip Frank of OSU placed first--1.99/6' 6 1/4" (794 pts)

Blazevica is currently in second place overall with 3522 points in the pentathlon, seventeen points behind Angel Richmore of OU with just the 800m race to go. IIRC, Richmore used to run for SFA.

Also:

Women's 60m Hurdles (prelim): Emelia Chatfield (2) and Akala Garrett (5) both qualify for Saturday's final.

Men's 60m Hurdles (prelim): Kendrick Smallwood (5) and Kody Blackwood (7) also qualify for Saturday's final, barring any unseen problems with the final result.

Results

WOMEN

Long Jump: Ackelia Smith (1) 6.74m/22' 1 1/2", Aaliyah Foster (3) 6.34m/20' 9 3/4". Smith and Foster scored 10 and 6 points, respectively, for the Longhorns.

5000m: Eva Jess (7) 16:20.48. Winner, Taylor Roe of OSU, ran a meet and facility record 15:32.03. Jess scored 2 points for the Longhorns.

DMR: Texas (11). First place won by West Virginia 11:18.08

MEN

Long Jump: Leo Neugebauer (1) 7.92m/26'; Jathan Belaire (2) 7.67m/25' 2"; Solomon Washington (7) 7.47m/24' 6 1/4"; Kelsey Daniel (9) 7.43m/24' 4 1/2". Earning 10, 8, and 2 points for first, second, and seventh, Neuegebauer and Belaire also jumped personal best distances in their medal winning event. Daniel was just two inches and a little bit of sand shy of 8th place which would have earned him a point.

Weight Throw: Jeremiah Nubbe (1) 22.79/74' 9 1/4". With a personal best throw, Nubbe earns 10 points for the Longhorns.

Pole Vault: Connor Boenig (12) 5.08/16' 8". First place winner Clayton Simms of Kansas vaulted 5.68/18' 7 1/2. Simms has the fourth best vault in the nation this season with this PB.

5000m: Isaac Alonzo (9) 14:16.08; Haftu Knight (DNF); Ernest Cheruiyot of Texas Tech placed first with a facility record time of 13:42.08. He would need to drop ~forty seconds from this time to catch Northern Arizona's Nico Young's nation leading time (for perspective).

DMR: Texas (4) 9:40.04. The DMR team earned 5 points for the Longhorns but it was going to be awfully tough to best OSU's performance. Setting meet and facility records with a time of 9:29.41, the most exciting part was that the second place BYU squad (9:29.98) was in the lead until the last leg when Ryan Schoppe put the pedal down to best the Cougars. (Schoppe is a graduate of La Porte HS, winning UIL State XC in 2019, runner up in '18. )

Day Two will begin late morning and conclude with the 4X400 Relays. Good luck to all the athletes participating.

Bless his heart and what a nice way to end the heptathlon for freshman Brock Lewis.

Heptathlon 1000m: Brock Lewis (1) 2:38.76 (887pts). Lewis places 8th overall in the Heptathlon with a personal best score of 5269 and scores a point for the Longhorns. Always a lot to contend with over two days, so I love to see the persistence. The overall winner was Grant Levesque of Houston with 6068 points.

Edit to add--I should explain that in our family a "bless your heart" is not a pejorative or sarcasm.
