That depends on what team you go to in the NFL. If all NFL OLs were good at pass pro the bust rate on QBs would be near 0

Apparently in the pros runners are better, receivers are better, corners are better, o linemen are better, but somehow not the d line so qbs are always afforded perfect protection.

There is a big difference between losing protection on a blitz vs guys coming untouched through the line on a simple 4 man rush. That doesn't really happen in the NFL frequently and if it is happening that team is likely a bottom feeder and the coach is updating his resume. People beat O-linemen in the NFL but that lineman usually gets his hands on them. We've probably had someone come through the line untouched about 15 times in two games.

Pretend for a second this was an NFL team in an NFL game.

Now imagine what people who expect the highest paid most important player on the team to do in those situations.

As a college quarterback Quinn is doing fine, and after Vandy its on the side of pretty good. In the frame of reference that he's going to play at the next level it's laughable.

That's why when he played against NFL caliber defenders with his NFL caliber Oline and WR corps and looked like he didn't belong it was such a huge red flag moment for so many people.

The issue with the rest of the season is that in the playoffs it's going to basically be NFL development level talent the whole way through and that's what people are concerned about. Quinn has shown that he doesn't have the "it" factor at that level consistently. Sometimes he does, because when Quinn is on like he was against Alabama and Michigan he's unstoppable. That's a big part of what makes an NFL QB an NFL QB, being able to get into and stay "in the zone"

Some of you don't like the word choice of pussy and that's fair. What I mean is Quinn lacks the ability to turn on and keep on his killer instinct like the highest level professionals do. That's something that develops over time and when people refer to "the game slowing down" for elite players that's what it means. They are able to adjust their mental intensity to have the focus that is required to perform.

Is it fair to expect Quinn to look like an NFL starter? Probably not, but that's what he's positioned himself as and that's the social contract he entered when he took the NIL money he took.

Sir, you have been watching Dak Prescott, haven't you?

That shit happens at every level. Teams bust pass protections, coverages, blocking schemes.

Anthony Richardson literally took himself out of a game because he was "tired". Quinn Ewers ever do that?

I don’t know the specifics here, but this comp is potentially bogus.  Players take themselves out all the time, particularly RBs.  So if that was because he was effectively performing that role, it’s a little different than a drop back passer.  I wouldn’t expect the Qb to come out for such a reason but context is important.

And I can tell you as one who once played QB and ran the ball, shit happens that makes talking in the huddle more difficult.

Two things I wonder about that have to do with Sark.

First, why does he almost never go to pump and go, Sluggos, etc. to counter the DBs jumping up on all those quick RPO outs and WR screens? They don't even have to be deep shots, just pump fake it right away to start the game and establish it's there. It would also take advantage of our lead blocking receiver getting blown by so often. Defense won't know the difference.

Second, why do we run so much zone running scheme when Sark recruited the "big humans"? Why are Cam Williams and DJ out here trying to run a scheme designed for small, quick feet linemen? Let them fire off the ball and go hat on hat in more straight ahead man blocking schemes, pin and pull, etc. Replace Connor with Neto if need be, but that just seems to fit what Flood as recruited to the position better.

A lot of their holding calls are in the run game, and I think that's a function of getting their hands outside the pads while trying to move into position to zone off their side. A defense that has to worry about those dudes firing off the ball at them also will lose steam on the pass rush.

Just seems like some weird choices and Sark has a bit of a governor on the offense. Is it because he doesn't trust Quinn?

Agreed. Just not at the frequency we are seeing. We just played Vandy and they protected their guy better than we did ours. Go back and watch last year vs Bama. We were solid in protection. If we could just give him what we gave him last year we would likely be 8-0.

that is very clearly an RPO which should've been handed off, though Vandy did a good job of disguising the blitz to muddle Quinn's read.

That's not an RPO because Quinn would ride the handoff. Looks to be just play action. Quinn never bellies the ball and the RB never opens his arms.

See lot more deep concepts with Arch compared to Quinn. I believe Sark used the Vandy game as a "get Quinn right" game. I believe the first 14 plays were runs or passes inside of 5 yards. Ran some double moves vs Georgia.  Either not enough time or Quinn turned it down. They will come back

I think the running game is a bad marriage. Conner's biggest weakness is moving people. Texas is a pass 1st team, so I assume coaches prefer pass blocking over road grading. RBs are not really suited to run in between the tackles for 20 carries.

plenty of RPOs don't have an extended mesh, that is more of a veer and shoot look.  You just need to look at the left side of the line, they are run blocking.  If it was play action their steps would be backward

We also run this counter action with Quinn faking the handoff with his back to the defense, so again I'm not sold on RPO. Regardless, as I said before your receiver needs to recognize blitz and go hot. Looks like Quinn expected him to.

Because teams know Texas can't consistently run the ball.

I think it has to do with what Paul mentioned in a post earlier this week. We are not attacking the intermediate/middle of the field as frequently or effectively as we did last year so teams are being able to just pin their ears back. This means we're not hitting the vacant spots in those areas where blitzers are potentially coming from.

40:50 mark of this video. Paul says the same thing that I said about this play. And just so you know this video didn't exist when I first said it. Again, you guys are screaming "dumb ass Quinn" and not seeing that the receiver is supposed to go hot when his man blitzes. Teams are seeing that we don't recognize blitzers from the secondary and are sending them. People either aren't making sight adjustments or are running right by them when they could at the very least chip them on their way out in their route.

Great video, and great explanation of what is happening some of the time when Ewers is getting blitzed. I was just talking to a buddy about the QB controversy, etc. and I said the one thing that I'm not understanding is why we aren't punishing teams for the outside blitzes. Inside blitz - okay, Ewers throws side arm and it's too easy for a blitzing LB in the A-gap to throw up his arms. But when the blitz is from the outside we should be able to throw to pressure. We just didn't read the backside blitz against UGA, but I know Ewers recognized it a couple of times since then and just hasn't been able to throw the ball. It has happened a couple of times with Wingo but also with Golden.

It's just another example that the struggles for the offense are a team failure. Ewers is a part of the problem - especially in the UGA game - but the WR and OL aren't doing him any favors. Couple that with a running back room that is struggling between the tackles and it becomes clearer why we are killing so many drives on offense. It's like every room on the offensive side of the ball is plagued by either penalties, failure to read the defense, or inability to execute.

Most of it is fixable, although I don't think we'll ever see Ewers reliably throw the deep ball or the RB run effectively inside. But at least we can get Wingo to recognize blitz and Cam Williams to stop with the stupid penalties. I swear he accounts for half our penalty yards every game.

This is the problem, people aren't grading him on the level that he was the leading Heisman candidate and projected #1 (Top 10) NFL pick coming into the season. We got version of Quinn for the 1st 3 games and since he got back we have gotten freshmen Quinn. We all saw what that version got us against Georgia, an ass kicking.

Even his best plays against Vanderbilt were bad throws that are not completed against better competition. The throw to Helm for 24 yrads, was off his back foot and in the NFL it;s either broken up or intercepted. The throw to Moore for the 2nd TD in the NFL that ball is broken up. The sack he took on the RPO was horrendous because he saw the blitzing CB the entire play, a NFL QB throws that ball away to save the 5 yards, then he compounds that on the next play by turning a great concept and route by Wingo into a PBU by underthrowing the ball. A JAG NFL QB completes that pass for a TD more times than not.

The training wheels need to be taken off and people need to understand that a 3-year QB shouldn't be slightly better than the freshmen backup.

The rest of team blocked liked it was an RPO, so maybe Quinn got confused, because it was classic RPO play design.

Another big issue is Texas has not been explosive the last 3 games. That is a huge problem, when the crux of your offense is underneath throws. Inefficient and non-explosive is not the combo you want

Run Pass Option. If there was never an intent to run it then it was never an RPO just play action. You know that but are arguing just to argue. When the running back, who is not watching the play only waiting to take the ball, never opens his arms it isn't an RPO.

I guess you consider turnovers explosive plays. Texas is 82nd in the nation in 10+ yard runs. Texas run game has never been efficient, but Brooks and Bijan used to rip off some long ones. Texas is 21st in explosive pass plays, but that is been falling fast.

Yeah. Don't worry about Cam getting beat to the inside with narry a spin move. Quinn should stay there and take that hit like a man.

In that clip, Cam is backpedaling way too much before engaging. He totally cedes all his buffer ground. He's just not very good at dealing with dynamic edge rushers at this point. He literally allows the edge rusher to dictate the terms there. Quinn is forced to adjust to the far side, which allows the rest of the DL to break off what was good protection by the rest of the line. The whole pocket breaks down as a result.

My biggest issue with the play that keeps getting posted is that Quinn has Wisner right in front of him with the closest defender trailing 5 yards behind him. It's an easy flip to Wisner and we've got a first down, or at worst a manageable 3rd and short.

I consider the Wisner TD runs, Ryan Wingo catch and run the 28 yard pass to Moore hell even the dicking around throwback pass to Helm amongst others explosive plays. And that’s just OU.

But you do you.

So 3, cool!! Texas is now 33rd in the nation in long scrimmage plays (using 10+). Miami and Arkansas are averaging 20+ a game. It is pretty simple. Quinn's ADOT is the lowest in the P5. As Texas plays better defenses, those big gains on short throws tend to decrease. Decent SEC defenses are going to tackle better and just have better athletes. Outside the 2 vs OU, the run game is not created many explosives all year. Keep in mind Texas has already played the 2 shittiest defense in the SEC (DFEI #120 MSU, #80 Vandy)
