Quinn "La Joya" Ewers - The Man The Myth The Mullet

Unless something strange happens in the last few games and in the playoffs, like Quinn is constantly under pressure and he still completes over 70% of his passes, Quinn is going to be a Day 2 pick.

Day 2 picks get a season or two to sit and learn.

Quinn is going to have a high completion percentage. Texas runs so many screens and swing passes.  Not complaining, I am guessing Texas had over 200 yards on them vs Florida (2 TDs (bond and Wisner) and explosive from Blue (great throw on that))

Just for fun, I went back and watched his first 9 dropbacks. He has 5 completions, a sack (doesn’t look to be his issue), a scramble that did give us a chance to consider going for it on 4th (but it looks as though he passed on an open guy at the 25), a miss that Bond takes to the house if caught, and what should have been a pick.  Two of the completions were passes that are caught damn near 100% of the time.  On the season Ewers ranks 42nd in completion percentage (64th if you use adjusted completion %) behind the LOS to give a little context.  One of those was on Wisners back shoulder.  Another completion was for 4 yards.  Only 1 was beyond 10 air yards.

It sure wasn’t one of his faster starts.  He certainly finished better than he started.  So whatever you want to call it, go ahead.  Oh and by the way he started 4/4 versus Georgia.  I don’t remember exactly where it went from there, but I don’t think there was a mix of missed TD and shoulda been pick in his first 9 dropbacks.

In any event, I’m done with it.

I watched the first half quickly. His best throws were to Moore in the endzone and the swing to Blue. 2 other throws stood out the 1st series throw to Helm and a later a crosser to Bolden. I definitely could have missed a couple.  Outside of that it was all 1st read and checkdown throws. Sark was on point in this game. Quinn played very well, but this was one of the easier games he will have (SEC defenses!!)

My bold prediction, Quinn shakes being a pussy and comes out and drops his nuts all over Aggie.

I'll never understand the homo-eroticism that some of you get from football.

Looked like to me that Quinn had more velocity on his throws against UF than the last few games.  He might just be fully recovered from his strained abdomen.

There were two WTF looking throws that stood out to me.  One the moonshot to Moore that was dropped.  I have no idea why he put so much air under that throw, and there was a wheel route that he lofted like there was a 20 ft tall defender he was trying to clear.

That isn't a football specific term. But are you suggesting that is something wrong with homo-eroticism? Some people find it to be the best eroticism.

I don't think the drop by Moore was that bad of a throw. He was wide open. Better to put some air under it and let him run under it rather than over throwing it. The latter was Quinn's problem for a long time. It gave us no chance for a completion. That throw to Moore was much better given that context. Quinn will never be a great deep ball thrower. But given that he is elite at short and intermediate, he just needs be "ok" at the deep ball for us to have a pretty killer offense. He met that mark on Saturday.

Agreed it wasn't that bad of a throw since Moore still should have caught it for a big gain.  I just thought WTF when it was released because it's trajectory.

IMO the Moore drop that wasn't in the end zone was underthrown by 2-4 yards. He was behind the last defender by a good 5 yards and it should have been out in front a bit more...if that's the case, assuming he doesn't drop it, it is a walk in touchdown. It still should have been caught 100% by Moore. We had a similar complaint on the Moore TD vs Vandy, it should have been an untouched TD but it was slightly underthrown as well making it a contested catch.

Not apologizing for qe but those passes were fine. Our receivers need to adjust and make a play. Do you think ryan Williams and Jeremiah smith make those catches. Maybe we schemed the wrong receiver. Would have been nice to have wingo on those routes. And I’m a believer in Deondre. I’m sure he took responsibility.

quinn drives me completely fucking nuts but it was good to see him get into somewhat of a rhythm and deliver some balls with confidence with near perfect protection and against an extremely depleted defense as we would hope he would. he was still frustrating in his routinely throwing off his back foot even with a completely clean protection situation but this was obviously the best quinn we have seen in a long time. he threw some absolute stinkers (miss to bond on first drive, horrible throw on the second golden td, the should have been pick deep in our end) but he threw some of his best balls of the year as well.

unfortunately, this game doesn't signal that quinn is suddenly ready to be effective against a above average defense that can pressure him given the state of florida's team but it does signal that he is back to making the occasional throw with confidence and he's gotten some of his intermediate accuracy back. he made really good reads other than the near pick throughout the game. if we get this quinn the rest of the way, we should make it to the playoff. if we can get a quinn that stops throwing off his back foot falling away for no reason, has confidence to throw strikes even when not wide open, and one that is slightly more mobile, we could contend for the national championship. the offensive line cannot be perfect every play...if he can help them out occasionally, potent offense.

and the irony of the game last weekend is that moore has been a fucking clutch stud all year bailing us out left and right...and then he gets two big plays that are substantially easier than all those other plays and he fucks them both. second drop on the td pass from quinn was perfect...he just flubbed it. he earned a pass for those two based on his play the rest of the year but he needs to tighten up his shit a little.

That Florida defense buttfucked Georgia offense. Not super impressive but they were ok on the defense side and we still did what we had to do and it could have been worse.

georgia's offense when not given the ball deep in the other team's territory on turnovers is fucking shitty. beck is 20x worse than quinn. they got inflated because their defense played the game of the year against us, quinn played poorly, and beck hit two critical passes at the end of the third. other than that, georgia is not special and their offense is downright mediocre.

florida suffered a lot of injuries in that game as well. they were missing their top three defensive backs against us.

but we did what we should have done (and what a great team does) in those circumstances...we fucking plowed them.  and that is very encouraging.

Wait a minute. That throw to Moore was an absolute dime. Moore misplayed it, unfortunately.

they are talking about the 1st one, where Moore had to slow down and turn around to catch it (he dropped it). It was not a good throw, but good enough that it should have been caught. Ill call it effective.

Beck threw Bobo under the bus in the presser after the Ole Miss game. It was almost subtle, but message was delivered.

How dare that ball Quinn threw hit Moore in the hands. Or would have it Moore had tried to actually use his hands.

Everyone understands that Moore dropped it and it's 100% on Moore....but it can also be true that if that ball is thrown out in front of Moore instead of underthrown Moore potentially catches in stride and walks in for an easy TD.

God forbid a receiver has to adjust his fucking route some. It hit him right in the hands, but Quinn is a pussy and such.

I was always told (when I was an awesome high school wide receiver) that if the ball hits your hand, it should be caught.

Probably why I tried to play defensive back in college.

Said receiver was behind every defender on the field....it could have been an easy touchdown. Making catches more difficult with defenders closing in will bite you against better teams.

So difficult to catch a ball that hits your hands.

Well, see, it shouldn't be caught if your QB is a pussy. Message board idiots should have explained that to you.

That was one of Georgias better yards and points efforts on the season.  The Beck picks were the problem.

But I’ve come to learn we all define things a little differently.  So 100% right you are.

I dont think anyone is claiming that ball should not have been caught. Golden made a catch on worse thrown ball. That isnt the point when judging if a ball was well thrown. Great throw, WR catches it in stride. Good throw, slight adjustment for a WR. Ill explain with an example. I have said the 2nd best throw was the 1 in the flat to Blue. That was tight window (heart skipped a bit when it was thrown, that looked like it could have been picked) and hit him perfectly on that upfield shoulder. Arch is not as good at that. Being accurate on the short routes are a huge part of Sark's offense. Throw it to the back shoulder and it could be 1-2 yard gain, hit that front shoulder and you give the receiver a real chance for YAC. Catchable ball and good ball are not always the same thing. People are too caught up in the Quinn is a pussy thing, to be rational.

I think I'm starting to understand what's happening.

People like watching Arch play a lot more. It's dynamic, he's fast, he makes iffy decisions and loves to throw his beautiful deep ball.

I think ewers is most of the way back to where he was pre-injury.

Quinn played a lot better than he did in the last few games for sure, but I don't know how much of that was him getting his confidence/mojo back and how much of that was the relative ease of the game. We have seen him flourish in easy games many times before, so it's not news. I don't know if his better showing means he is going to play well at Arky or Collie station as well. We shall see!

In my opinion, the pace on that throw to Blue was more important than the location.  There was some extra on it, likely intentional.  That one happened to have zip and placement.

I understand it was not a high difficulty throw, but everything about the TD pass to Helm (quick trigger, zip on the ball, placement) were things that Quinn was seemingly having trouble with the last few weeks. That play was when I thought to myself he might finally be healthy again.

I loved the pass just before the 1st Moore drop that went to Bond on a deep out.

This is why this thread is so long and why the debate continues regarding Quinn’s effectiveness.

We never know which Quinn is going to show up, and we continue to hope for a Quinn we have occasionally seen, despite him more regularly being the guy who has happy feet, has terrible mechanics, and is worried at the mere idea of pressure.

Too many “ifs” with Quinn for us to reach the pinnacle and I’ll happily eat crow if I’m wrong.

Apparently.  Where’d you play DB?

I played one year at Texas Lutheran and 1 year as a scout team walk on for UT. Aker's last year. It was a blast, even though we weren't very good.

Then after I got older I was an all world flag football icon. Our teams won both the men's open and co-ed all school intramural championships in 1989. My picture is on the wall at Gregory Gym. I'm pretty awesome. lol

Yes. Quinn is great with a clean pocket and 1st read is there. He one of the best QBs in the country in that environment. He has a rep for poor pocket presence and an inability to handle pressure. Only way for him to win over his detractors is to have a big game with a messy pocket. There just arent many chances for that.
