Quite a few quotes of Shipley with  "We cannot afford to lose another game IMO."

Not entirely correct. We can afford to lose the CCG and would still be in the 5-12 bracket.

Losing to UK or aggy likely keeps us out of the CCG, and might shove us out of 5-12 as well.

At this point we have at least three games left. Whether the third one is the CCG, a first-round homer, or a Toilet Bowl remains to be seen. If we keep winning, we have the three and another three in the playoffs. Could be a lotta games left, and they're just gonna keep getting tougher.

Bob Shipley although a likable good ole boy is and has been over his head. Irwin I get and respect. Shipley, and I mean this in the nicest way, is just an old dumb jock. He has never given me any reason to think he was ever more than a mediocre coach at any level. There is your Hawt take. My personal opinion of course.

Every QB is taught to throw that ball high to take advantage of the mismatch(6'5 vs 5'10) which is exactly why we chose AD to go to. The ball is out before the receiver break. At that point you are expecting your receiver to put his cleats in the ground for separation, come back, and high point the football on the sideline. You aren't expecting him to round off his route and not jump. Even the DB knows what we are trying to do which is why he is ready to jump and bat the ball down.

The pre-snap look had the defender nearly 10 yards off of AD. And Quinn just follows the script and makes no adjustment. This is our Achilles heel with Quinn. He can’t improvise and we’re dead in the water if he can’t execute Sark’s script. A script that is watered down and hampered by Quinn’s inability to connect on the deep ball.

That throw fucking sucked regardless of these mental gymnastics.
It’s also pretty stark the way you talk about Quinn now vs last year and the year before. Now it’s all about how he was overrated as a recruit whereas the last two years it was blame X, AD, JT, etc.

In fairness those 3 receivers were mid.

What are you talking about? The DB breaks on the route and no matter where that ball was thrown he was going to be there to contest it. He only jumped because he saw it was high. If it was low he would've been there to get his hands on it too. In fact, he broke so quickly that had it been a low throw he could've stepped in front of it. The problem is the route. AD needs one hard left inside step to make the DB take one step inside and he catches this ball uncontested. He never sold anything to the inside. Anyone who has played receiver, DB, or QB can tell you that is an awful route. In fact, I challenge you to find anywhere saying that is a good route. DBs are taught to protect inside out. One hard step inside and the DB will bite.

AD didn’t do much of an adjustment either tho. The throw that Ewers needs to make in this situation is almost just as difficult because the way AD places his body. His hips are faced the wrong way so he would have to quickly flip them and plant a foot in the ground to make a borderline diving catch. So throwing it to the pylon would make it an insane catch by AD. If they could do it all over again I’m betting AD runs a route similar to the one in the CCG against okie st, and it’s an easy pitch and catch.

Edit: this isn’t me saying it was all AD. They both messed up and were unfortunately unprepared for the look.

7:34 mark below

Same receiver and same play to the other side vs Houston. Watch AD take a hard step inside and watch the sep it gives him when he cuts back outside. This is how you run that route. It doesn't matter how far off the DB is. The hard fake close to the goal line will get the reaction you need. This is what Quinn is expecting. Now contrast that with the route run against Washington. Night and day difference.

This play is making my point about the Washington throw. Look how close to the pylon AD is in the UH game. Quinn throws it there near the pylon against Washington and we’re playing for a title. The ball was out of Quinn’s hands before AD made the cut at Washington so blaming the cut for ball placement is irrelevant even though it was poor route running.

Quinn had pressure in his face at Washington and threw a lob when it should have been thrown like in the UH game.

You’ll catch a lot of hell for saying that but based off nfl evidence so far…that seems pretty accurate. Mitchell is really athletic but I’m not certain he knew how to even play wr while at Texas lol. I think helm is a better TE than sanders and worthy struggles to make an impact with Andy Reid/mahomes. I am over all this though, if Quinn struggles against Kentucky he needs to be pulled and let the arch era begin. Our defense is elite and probably the best I’ve seen in my lifetime. Our offense needs to make a couple plays here and there to move the chains and not turn it over. We play for a championship if Quinn wakes up or arch is who we think he is.

The saying is true. "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink".

Again. It doesn't matter where the ball is thrown vs Washington ole buddy is closing fast and would've broken it up. Had Mitchell run the Houston route vs Washington the Washington DB wouldn't be anywhere close to the ball no matter where it was thrown because of the separation on the break. Now out of respect for you I will leave it at that but you won't find a single coach that will tell you the Washington route was the right one.

LOL what?  X has over 350 yards halfway through his rookie season with the 2-time Super Bowl champions.  I'd say he's doing OK.  Mitchell is one of the most clutch receivers I've seen in years, over 3 seasons at the highest level in college.

He couldn't fully extend because the pass was out of bounds. He had to keep his feet in bounds. Not a one of the four throws into the end zone against Wash were even close to being caught, IMHO

To the MF pylon for the win! Look how far behind AD the defender was. The other guy inside the 10 has no chance of jumping the route if he throws a laser. The horizontal stance after the throw too. We fucking had this game.

@Thatguy you’re gonna honestly look at this garbage throw and say he couldn’t have stepped into it and ripped it about 10 mph harder, at the pylon, and beat that DB? He looks so much like Case McCoy in this clip.

350 yards in 10 games lol. There's like 4 rookie receivers who have better stats with way shittier qb's in way shittier offenses than worthy, your ok and my ok are different clearly. I didn't say mitchell didn't make big plays but I'm saying the nuances of route running/blocking/proper body placement were lacking for his size and athleticism. It's possible to ball out in college and not exactly know how to play the position, I think the proof is the colts have a 3rd round wr from north carolina who they throw to more than mitchell and he's 5'9' 170lbs. These guys were such studs that the NFL team their on doesn't make them a focal point of their offense? OK

He has the second most receptions on the Chiefs, along with Rashee Rice and just ahead of Noah Gray, but they're all WAY behind Travis Kelce.  He's fine.  You might want to consider his surrounding talent and the design of their offense.

It was. Maybe him being shocked at the coverage and knowing a fade route wasn’t going to work had something to do with it. Or he just half assed the last play of the game and a chance to play in the national title game.

I've always thought the way he ran the route looked like he thought there was 0 chance the ball was going to be thrown his way.

48 targets and only 24 catches, that seems less than ideal. Upon further digging, 3 of his catches have resulted in 120 of his yards. 21 receptions for 187 yards running a 4.21 40. He's a great longhorn and I'm glad he played at Texas but elite is not a title I'd give him.

I didn't say he was anywhere near "elite".  At any rate, this has nothing to do with Quinn Ewers' alleged suckitude.

There are several ways of looking at this.  Obviously as rookies they have much to learn, but Longhorn rookies are approaching 100 catches.  Has that ever happened?

Worthy had 6 TDs total so that’s production.  With Kelce and Rice he was never going to be the focal point.  Downs and Pittman were first in line before Mitchell arrived.  Seems as though Mitchell was a pick for the future rather than dominate now.  None of those teams are even top 10 in passing yards.  Mahomes is sitting at 10th in passing TDs.

I thought the original comment was meant in jest anyway.

Rice has only played in 4 games, worthy should be a poor mans tyreek hill in that offense with his speed. He should have about 15 more catches since he's been targeted 48 times. Pittman has had some kind of a back strain that has limited him physically, downs is tiny, and alec pierce seems like some kind of journeyman that a 6'2" 210 4.35 wr should easily beat out and take his catches from him. Nabers (shitty qb), odunze (shitty qb), Bowers (really shitty qb), brian thomas jr (mac jones now LOL)...they are doing just fine with terrible qb's....like quinn apparently lol.

if we had the quinn that played against okie state and michigan, i would put him at 2 or 3. unfortunately, that quinn seems to have been murdered superman 3 style by dark quinn.

you will have a hard time convincing me that there is a single qb on that list other than howard and leonard that would have missed the three deep balls against arkansas so wildly bad as quinn did.

dart is inconsistent and does some stupid shit sometimes but he can be deadly with his legs and can be deadly accurate when he's hot. rourke is playing extremely consistently and has a wonderful stat line. but, as i said, that may all be bullshit. we get to find out this weekend. tennessee kid is also inconsistent but has been very good at times. i might revise allar...he's nothing special but he tends not to make the big mistakes. he's one of the more reliable and consistent players on the list along with rourke. but he's nothing special.

to be clear, this might be the worst year of college football qbs i can remember. no one is consistently great. if i were an nfl team drafting, ward is the only one i would even consider and even then, meh. quinn really blew an amazing opportunity to leverage a terrible qb class into a really high pick. but watching him try to throw deep balls was outright cringey and him peeing down his leg every single time the defense shows any designed pressure is not going to endear him to any organizations.

wr's that need a lot of work tend to struggle when they get to the nfl, it's a good barometer for overall how solid they were as college wr's. You can absolutely ball out in college but not understand the nuances of your position. I'm saying if quinn has nabers, odunze, bowers, or any of the ohio state guys from the last 3 years then some of those bad throws are caught. IMO. Just an opinion man.

im sorry, what? a player’s transition into the nfl determines how good he was in college? on what planet? roy williams, the most dominant WR in Texas history, had 54 and 45 catches respectively his first two seasons. by your logic that means he wasn’t any good at Texas, when in reality he was an absolute monster in college who did not transition well into the nfl for a myriad of reasons. his time in the nfl says absolutely nothing about who he was in college.

You're missing what I'm saying, roy williams was a freak athlete that didn't learn to play wr correctly because he didn't have to. If he had committed himself to learning the position entirely then he would have been just fine in the nfl. He shit on college cb's but once you get to the nfl it's about athleticism AND knowing how to play wr at a high level. Vince took off running in college at times when it wasn't necessary just because he could. Had he forced himself to read the defense and find the open wr more times he would have been a better nfl qb for it. There are so many examples it's not even funny, look up just about every raiders first round pick for the last 25 years. They love freakishly athletic guys who put up big stats in college but may not have been great "technicians."

seriously. it’s kind of unreal to imagine. if he’d been drafted by a team with any sort of veteran leadership then maybe roy could have reached his potential in the pros. can’t really blame anybody but himself though. still was just a freak at Texas though. helluva downfield blocker. (😡)
