The odd thing is I dont think Ewers is immobile. He has actually shown the ability to scramble (Washington game). He just has really bad pocket awareness. We saw him move in the pocket with minimal pressure and somehow run into a pass rusher that is engaged with a blocker in the Ark game. Somehow, he didnt notice the 600 pounds of humanity. it's bizarre

Threw two TDs and 0 INTS on the road last week in double-digit road win against a conference opponent that has a sociopathic-level motivation to beat our program. His second TD was an amazing throw on the run.
I've gotten to hang with him over the last three summers, and he is a genuinely nice and good person
The wonderful thing about Surly Horns is that it is a forum for everyone to share their views, and I always enjoy all of your posts, even when I disagree with what's been written.
Just wanted to remind us all that we are incredibly lucky to have this outstanding young man represent our program.

And yes, I'm out of shape. Fuck you. I turned 65 last week.

I like Quinn and I want him to succeed, as he goes Texas goes.

That said, I think he'd have even more success hitting those deep passes.

I like Quinn, and don't doubt your impressions of him as a person.  And having met you in person, you're in damn good shape for 65, and am actually surprised at that age.

But, I think Sam Ehlinger has been our best QB since Colt.  Yes, Quinn has him on a conference title.  But Quinn has better talent and coaching around him than Sam ever had, by a mile.  And I think Sam is a better overall passer, more of a dual threat with a much better pocket presence, and showed a bit more fire and mental toughness than Quinn.

I'm not bashing Quinn at all.  I'm rooting my ass for him these next two games (and hopefully beyond this season).  Just responding to your first assertion.

48 targets and only 24 catches, that seems less than ideal. Upon further digging, 3 of his catches have resulted in 120 of his yards. 21 receptions for 187 yards running a 4.21 40. He's a great longhorn and I'm glad he played at Texas but elite is not a title I'd give him.

He was an elite college wr. This is so stupid.

They are just different QB's.  That aside, Sam was more consistent.  Quinn is better than Sam overall when he is "on" IMO without much question.  I'm not sure Sam could have won that game @ Bama last year.  But Quinn's floor is lower.  When his fastball isn't working, he doesn't have Sam's ability to make things happen with his legs.

Haha, thanks for the personal shout-out.

As a Westlake 'honk,' I love Sam and agree that he was a special, unique player, plus an incredible competitor and winner. And yes, Quinn's team and coaching is much better.

However, I think Quinn's ceiling is higher and I think his top performances have been better. While there is much legitimate criticism of him here, he has made several throws that are simply unreal. His sideline toss to R. Johnson while scrambling vs Oklahoma two years ago comes to mind. So does his TD throw to Worthy vs Alabama, which is (amazingly) criticized here.

Thanks again and congrats on your daughter's transition to college!

The throw he made against OU 49-0 between 2 defenders to JT was as elite as they come.  I think that is the reason for the frustration with Quinn.  Fair or not, you show that kind of potential your first year as a starter, the expectations are that you play at a high to elite level consistently by 3rd year.   My personal expectations were, barring injury, no doubt he would be at the heisman ceremony.  It's expectations relative to performance that is the source of the complaints I think.  He's been a really good QB for us.

I think everyone hopes he can take us on a 3 game heater to end the season and snag a playoff bye and he is 100% capable of doing that.

Quinn transferring here had a huge impact on the trajectory of this program. He led us to a Big 12 championship in record breaking fashion and a playoff birth. People need to remember and embrace that before kicking him to the curb. Manning will have his time, deal with it.

He was also an extremely tough sumbitch. I still think Quinn can get the job done given how good the team is overall. Michigan won last year with a great defense and a good enough offense.

Maybe I have a recency bias because of our frustrations with Quinn as of late, but I'm making a distinction between a better overall passer (Sam) and a better arm (Quinn).  Yeah, when Quinn is "on," he makes some throws we never saw from Sam.  But I think when comparing their college careers at this point, Sam proved to be a more reliable passer than Quinn has.

And whether you disagree with my better overall passer assessment, the sum of my opinion was that Sam is our best QB since Colt, responding to TreatyOak's specific statement, which includes passing, pocket presence, leadership, durability, running ability, etc.

Sam is just a guy that was easy to root for. He maximized his talent and he would run into a wall, if he thought that would get the win

The key to michigans success was defensive depth and being able to control the game with their running attack.
Us being able to run the ball late in games is not the same thing.

They ran that sh!tty offense and asked him to bail them out on 3rd downs. JJ McCarthy was much better than people give him credit.

I guess you deal in absolutes, sith horn. I think it's highly debatable, in favor of Quinn, and that you'll have to face it by mid December.

Feel like I could argue both sides of this. They are both squarely in that second tier of Texas QBs all time.

Quinn in no way, shape or form has greater fire and mental toughness than Sam. It is laughable to suggest otherwise. You can argue what I didn't claim, that he's a better passer when he isn't wilting under pressure. There's no doubt he is blessed with greater arm talent and has a higher ceiling. But to claim he has more moxy, fire or mental toughness? Those qualities oozed from Sam's pores.

Hopefully Quinn is working his way back into that zone where he just focuses and plays with confidence. When he's there, our offense is virtually unstoppable. I hope he gets his mojo back and will rejoice as much as any longhorn when he does.

Sam was never a great passer and definitely had his limitations but he was very consistent. Quinn is definitely a more naturally talented passer and his highs are much higher than Sam's were but his lows are definitely massively lower. Quinn has been a roller coaster every year while Sam was a fucking rock.

Regarding the best QB since Colt, it's definitely Sam Ehlinger. Sam was consistent and when necessary would go into turbo mode to carry the team to victory and didn't struggle with the slumps.

I see we're still bickering over Quinn. Is there a stopping point, cause you're just going in circles.

Bitch to bitch is fine, but got damn, y'all really in your feelings right now. He is who he is. He's not going superman, he'll throw 2 TD's at most and let the defense beat the shit out of the opponents offense and we walk away victorious. This has heen done all season outside of 2 games against inferior opponents, which one of them hurt his supposed "abs" he had been working on.

I think you’re looking at team success and attributing that to Quinn. I don’t hate Quinn, he’s definitely not my type of player in the way he’s introverted and cold. Where Sam was a warrior that would die on the field. Sam played in 46/50 games, undefeated 4-0 postseason record.

Tale of the tape (best individual season)

2019 Sam Ehlinger JR. 8-5

  • 296/454 65% 3,663 Yds 32 TDs 10 Ints
  • 663 Rushing Yds 7 TDs
  • Best individual performance: vs #1 LSU 31/47 401 yds 4TD/0int 60 rush yds 1 TD
  • 67th ranked defense
  • 4,326 yds 39 TDs total production

2023 Quinn Ewers Soph. 12-2

  • 272/394 69% 3,479 Yds 22 TDs 6 Ints
  • 75 Rushing Yds 5 TDs
  • Best individual performance: at #4 Alabama 24/38 349 Yds 3TD/0int 11 rush yds
  • 15th Ranked defense
  • 3,554 yds 27 TDs total production

yes, Quinn has more arm talent. But durability and production isn’t on the same planet as Sam.

I would never suggest Quinn has more fire or toughness than Sam, who was special in that way. I totally loved Sam as a UT QB, I only think Quinn is better. And I think the numbers will make it clearl by year’s end.

Um - statistics? Wins? Stuff like that.

Well it’s not mathematically possible for his statistics to eclipse Sam. Unfortunately I don’t see Quinn with a 460+ yard game left in him. This team is undefeated without Quinn dating back to last year (3-0). Quinn would need to win everything from here just to tie Sam in wins (35)

Actually, I lied. I keep forgetting Quinn has missed multiple games from 2022-2024. He’s currently at 23 wins total. So again it isn’t mathematically possible for him to catch Sam in wins.

Ironically, from 2022-2024 Texas is undefeated in games Quinn doesn’t play in (5-0).

Also, records through first 30 games:

Quinn 23-7

Sam 20-10

Wins generally speaking is a team stat.  There’s no debate that Sam had a less talented team.

Sam was asked to carry his team in a manner you will likely never see again.  The mental and physical endurance it required of him was incredible.  It’s unfortunate that his last year was a cluster in multiple respects.

Why are y'all talking about gross statistics?  Sam played in 50% more games than Quinn has.

Both are Longhorns.  Loved Sam.  Hoping for a final boost for Quinn.  That said, Quinn has the higher QB Rating (for whatever that's worth) -- 149.7 to 145.

Cue the "QB rating is stupid" responses, and it may very well be, but if we're talking statistics, it's really stupid to look at cumulative career numbers given the radically different # games played.

You can drill it down however you want and Sam still clears. Passing yards in a game, passing yards in a season, TDs in game, TDs in a season. When you add in the rushing yds/tds it’s not close at all.
