Quinn "La Joya" Ewers - The Man The Myth The Mullet

Coach pop a bitch

Recommended Posts

1. His hips are rotated incorrectly. He was clearly looking at Helm (2)

2. Helm was super covered. But if his hips were rotated correctly he could have easily hit the crossing route (3).

3. This is a touchdown with a good pass. Instead it’s a sack.

I think it’s fair to say Ehlinger and Ewers are close in terms of “overall college QB” to date. I think saying Ehlinger is clearly the better QB of the two is nonsense.

I have the exact same thoughts, but in the opposite direction. Some act like it’s Quinn in a landslide because of the 12-2 playoff season. Which is why I’m giving context to Sam at Texas.

Here are two big ones that tell the story.

Quinn Ewers Defense rankings as a starter

2022  - 28th

2023 - 15th

2024 - 1st

1,000 yard runners: two, Bijan 1,580 - 2022 & Jonathon Brooks 1,139 - 2023

Sam Ehlinger Defense rankings as a starter

2017 - 30th

2018 - 58th

2019 - 67th

2020 - 61st

1,000 yard runners: None in 4 years

Member that time WVU dropped 10 on 3rd and 10 and Sam run ran for a 1st?    Pretty awesome.

To date, as best I can tell Ewers has never started and won a game in which the opponent scored more than 27.  Malik Murphy did it in 2 starts at 30 points.  Nevermind some of that was his doing.

In 2020 alone, Sam won 3 in which the opponent scored 30+ points.  Lost 1 in which the opponent scored 30+ (uh we fumbled on the 1).  Lost one in which we scored 40.  Several of these were OT but still.

In 2019, he won 3 in which the opponent scored more than 30+, one was 48.  He lost 3 in which the opponent scored 30 including 1 in which they scored 40+.

2018 was more of the same.  Beat OU then got a screw job in the championship game.

He had two wins in regulation in which our opponents scored 45+ points.  Lost at least 1 in which we scored 40 in regulation.

I would never suggest Quinn has more fire or toughness than Sam, who was special in that way. I totally loved Sam as a UT QB, I only think Quinn is better. And I think the numbers will make it clearl by year’s end.

So you mistook my original FIFY of South Austin's quote to include his entire statement or everything about Sam. I guess I could have been less ambiguous by isolating that portion of the quote initially, but figured the strike-through and italics were sufficiently clear what I was emphasizing. It's what stood out to me when I first read it. The book on Quinn isn't totally written yet. We've seen him play great before. He needs to find his way back to that version of himself.

Maybe Ewers is better than Ehlinger when the pass protection is perfect (like in practice) but my measure of QB is to perform when things aren't perfect. The toughness, escapability, and improv is where guys stand out and where Sam is leagues better so far.
