Quinn "La Joya" Ewers - The Man The Myth The Mullet

Coach pop a bitch

What I meant was…it would seem to be contrary to the disclosure rule to not list him at all. The way I see it is that players not listed are healthy and either starting or expected to play their normal load.

So if a starter, who is not listed on the injury report at all, doesn’t start due to injury, would that be an issue with rule compliance?

My thinking is if he’s not listed at all, he’s 100% starting

Elko already got in trouble for that earlier in the year.  For a high profile player, I don't think they will try to sneak him through.  They'll list him.

I'll admit to not having put much thought into it, but to me it seems it's totally a coach's perogative to choose his starters.  Maybe listing him as "probable" is enough cover for not starting him, but it's an odd presumption that NOT playing him is only due to (undisclosed) injury.

Maybe I'm stupid, but I'm just not that worried about this. If Ewers is at 90% and dealing, we win. If he's too hurt or off his game, Sark has a built-in excuse to switch to Arch that lets Quinn save face. And I think we can beat A&M with Arch, given how different the playbook and gameplan looks with him. He's like the polar opposite of Ewers. Either way, Elko is now stuck trying to prep for two completely different QBs. And he doesn't have the horses. Their DL is great, but their LB and DB groups have serious deficiencies.

My only lingering concern is that Ewers will go out there, look bad, and Sark won't switch to Arch until we're deep in a hole. Then Arch is put in the position of trying to pull us out of it. Although I think there's a reasonable basis for that concern, I also think Sark has earned a little grace and a little confidence in how he manages the season and the QB room. I'm never going full on "trust the corches," but I'll trust Sark on this until he shows me otherwise.

The right side of the O-line (Campbell+Williams) was repeatedly beaten by stunts during the Georgia game. There is some persistent miscommunication happening there that opponents with good D-lines can and will exploit.

Talking more about A&M stunting like crazy vs Auburn. That was a dumb ass game plan. You start looping DL vs the run and it is basically Russian roulette. That isnt factoring in Auburn has 1 of the best RBs in the SEC. Kentucky got caught slanting towards the OZ, only to find out 5-12 yards later it was counter. In the pass pro I share your concern. Why I said winning 1st down will be huge in this game. The book is out on Quinn. Muddy his reads or pressure him. I expect A&M to try and pressure him and see if he can keep his cool.

I would have absolutely said yes on this prior to the second half of the Kentucky game.

I'm leaning toward starts but gets pulled quickly if ineffective.

This Quinn situation is so strange to me.  By all accounts and evidence, Sark runs a professional meritocracy with a focus on procedures and culture.  I'm trying to wrap my head around what this would look like for any other functional title contender.  If your starter is injured/hobbled, and you have a high profile backup with starter and game experience, this is a no-brainer.  You sit the injured guy and play the next man up.  No controversy, no rumors, just business as usual.

I have to wonder what kind of crap is going on behind the scenes to where this isn't cut and dry.  When Quinn was clearly hobbled in the UK game, that was the time to sit him and play the backup.  To what degree is Sark so beholden to Quinn that he can't make the obvious move there?  Not even wading into the whole Quinn vs. Arch thing that has occupied so many pages on this thread, the guy was clearly injured.  That was the time to play the backup.  That's why you have one.  Because he didn't, though, now we have to wonder if Arch is airmailing the ball in practice so bad that Sark is afraid to play him.  It's either that or the Ewers family has compromising photo evidence of Sark.

Make it make sense.

I mean, we are barely a month removed from Sark benching him in the second quarter of a game for performance so I have very little reason to believe he won’t do it again whether it be for injury or performance if he deems it necessary.

he benched him for a series? maybe 2? Then trotted him right back out after Halftime when he should have stayed on the bench.

That's what I thought too, until Sark left him out there with a 3 score lead against Kentucky, when most everyone could tell Quinn was in a lot of pain and unable to leave the pocket. Worst case scenario is if Quinn starts, the offense struggles between his injury and heavy pressure, but Sark leaves Quinn in because the defense is keeping the game close. Need to take advantage of every possession we have.

Okay. Bottom line is Sark pulled him in the biggest home game of his life when that was probably the last thing he wanted to do, so those saying he won’t sit him or pull him this week if it comes to it doesn’t feel accurate.

I mean that's fair, you're right he DID pull him.

I just don't know that he will if he didn't pull him after how bad he looked in the 2nd half last week.  I hope you're right.

Either he's healthy enough to go out there and shave aggy's shit in...OR they keep him on the bench and/or pull him if he struggles.

If he can’t walk it’s not up to him

It was most noticeable on the roll out, when he tried to slow himself down. He was still running out his fakes late in the 4Q vs Kentucky. Walked fine after the final kneel down. He was banged up, but it did not look like a major injury watching the game. The injury reports seem to validate that

The only narrative I’ll agree with a little is since he has pulled him once for performance, if he does it again even if it is for injury and the backup comes in and plays very well, there may not be any going back. And that probably isn’t a bridge he wants to cross but it’s also his job to do what is right for Texas and I think he knows that.

To the extent Quinn's ankle is TBD until kickoff (which I think is likely the case), I don't think Sark's approach this week is that complicated.  Quinn has played multiple OU games, @ Bama, Big 12 Championship, UW playoff game and @ Michigan.   He has the big game road experience any head coach would value whereas Arch has zero.  Of all games I have no doubt Sark really wants Quinn to play this game.  Now, if he's completely ineffective because he gets in and can't move/plant and we are struggling, I'll be shocked if he doesn't take him out.

Kentucky was odd but we could run the ball at will as long as we weren't fumbling.  He didn't really need Quinn to do anything and I don't think he ever actually thought the game was in question.  This week is different.

In sum, I fully expect Quinn to start this game unless he flat out can't go but I also have zero doubt Arch is getting a ton of starter reps this week preparing to play (particularly considering Quinn is probably getting limited work to maximize healing before Saturday).

This is a legacy game for Quinn and one all the NFL scouts want to see him play. He has a minor ankle sprain. He knows how big this game is for him. I cant imagine he isnt going to play.

The A&M game against USCr shows that a mobile Arch would be great to replicate it. My main worry with Arch over Ewers is whether Arch has command on "extended handoffs" (horizontal passing, screens), which is a big part of our offense. If not executed well, those are dangerous passes. Without this part of the offense, we'll be high variance, boom or bust type. Way too risky. I hope Sark has Arch ready.

I tend to think he didn’t pull him in the Kentucky game because he did pull him in the Georgia game (and regretted it). Just can’t make sense of it otherwise after he missed that slip screen so badly (due to clearly being injured).

This. Pulling Quinn for just 2 series came off as a desperate move without conviction. Then he leaves an injured Quinn in there for an entire half with a decent lead. It was a great opportunity to give Arch some good reps and get him ready for Aggy and the playoffs if we needed him, instead he went full Mack Brown. Something behind the scenes is causing this irrational behavior imo.

In all honesty, I think QE makes it the whole game, and gives out his calm vibe, and plays Quinn-like.

And the rest of our players on both offense and defense just beat the living shit out of the ags.

If he plays like the first half of Kentucky we absolutely stroke Aggy

We live in a clickbait era where people read headlines and watch highlights instead of watching full games. This was one headline after the game. If you didn’t watch then you would never know Quinn was injured had an awful 2nd half.

Sark is just trying to prevent the headline from becoming “Ewers suffers another injury” or “Ewers pulled for Arch” especially on Senior Night. I think it’s dumb risking further injury but I understand why Sark kept him in the game especially since the running game was finally working.
