Quinn "La Joya" Ewers - The Man The Myth The Mullet

This stands out to me the most. Obvious blitzes (and defensive formations suggesting a blitz) shouldn't absolutely flummox a 3-year starter who has been working with someone like Sark the entire time. He has had continuity with his coaches and his system. This shouldn't be happening.

While true it’s Georgia that counted as losses and they are known for being really nasty to defend. Tons of missed assignments and such in both games.

it was a team effort, Quinn is part of that team. He had to do better, he didn’t. But so did a A LOT of others. Frankly this offense hasn’t put together a complete game against decent competition since Michigan.  That’s Quinn, the OL, the pass pro and blitz pick up, routes, drops, Cam and his penalties, Helm and his penalties, all of it.

I’m gonna chill.  This was a team loss. QBs do throw ints.  He may not have lost the game for us but he didn’t win it.  He is a game manager type.  Not a dynamic playmaker.  A lot of qbs could’ve had similar results vs our schedule.

thank you for being a great Longhorn Quinn.  I think a fresh start for both sides may be best

I'll post more general thoughts on the first half after my rewatch is done soon and certainly I'm not putting everything on Ewers, but this is the kind of stuff where it's fair game to be critical. Ewers has to learn to take the easy stuff instead of making his life hard. Golden is working his way open. There is never a universe where throwing to Moore here is the right option.

Game managers don’t turn the ball over consistently. I love anyone who goes to war for the Burnt Orange. Quinn has certainly paid his dues. The guy is held together by duct tape. This team can win a national title. College kids fuck up, you need a QB who can erase a few mistakes a game. Quinn not only contributes to the fuck ups, but he’s not enough to overcome adversity. He’s got two weeks to get relatively healthy. He’s got two decent teams on the docket he should be able to have success against. Maybe the Arch package develops further and we pull off a 2006 Florida Gators run.

I’ve been on the ride or die with Quinn side of the argument all season. But I don’t think Texas gets past Oregon (or maybe even ASU) without switching to Arch.

The defense will ball out, but we need to roll the dice with Arch’s higher ceiling to elevate us for a title run.

Sark just said on the selection show he probably should have used Arch for his running threat earlier in the game.  Hopefully we see A Lot more of Arch in the playoffs.  Just give him a couple series at least, we have seen what he can do on the fly when things break down.

he needs to quit guessing in game and have a fucking defined plan.  maybe he is figuring out it is going to be very very hard to Greg McElroy your way to a title.

Again, you're putting everything on Quinn. He isn't a game changer. But he was good enough for us to win. Other parts of the team have to step up too. It's so weird to bash the best part of our offense yesterday. I'm sorry he isn't what you want. But your list, a least for yesterday, is largely bullshit. He did evade sacks and make plays. He did throw deep. He did burn the blitz. We couldn't execute in the redzone because our offense simply isn't built for it, at least against Georgia. That's just the truth. It ain't all Quinn my man. Get over it.

Lulz, how many TDs did we score in the red zone yesterday? What was out success rate in the red zone yesterday?

You refuse to put any responsibility on the loss on our QB. You never will despite whatever evidence is presented.

You write shit that's just not true. Fabrication is the word.

That's not changing and neither is Quinn's ability. So.. I've come to an end of this round and round with you, but I'm sure you'll need, very badly need the last word. So... you can have it.

Without giving it a ton of thought, I can't think of too many play calls worse than that one under Sark.

Sark fucking sucked yesterday. Screen passes NEVER work against a team with Georgia's defensive speed and yet we ran several. Also for play action to work you need to be somewhat successful running the ball if not you are just setting the QB up to be sacked.

Unfortunately our offensive savant can't get out of his own way and has to continue to call plays GA feasts on.

The good news is Clemson & ASU don't have the requisite speed to fuck us. In fact only Ohio State, Oregon, & Georgia likely are the only teams that do.

I appreciate him vocalizing it, but it's very frustrating to hear anyways.  Sark needs to throw out any concerns about the QB situation and do whatever it takes to win. Treat every game as its own entity.

FWIW, over Thanksgiving weekend I was talking to a friend of a friend who has a kid that is a scholarship offensive player at Texas. The kid said Arch tears it up in practice and makes eye opening plays on a daily basis. That's not an indictment on Quinn in any way, just a heads up for those that assume Arch must be struggling in practice and that being the reason he isn't playing more.

How have I not put anything on Quinn? He has limits. I'm not expecting him to be a QB that he isn't. I wish he could be. I wish we could run block Georgia. I wish our receivers could make contested catches. You're just a blind hater. That game was still winnable with a single kick, or a single block, or single catch. That's what it came down to. Everyone needs to play better. Everyone needs to step up and make the plays that are there, not just Quinn.

Here, I'll go through a put together the a highlight reel from yesterday where Quinn 1) beat the blitz, 2) evaded the rush and made plays, and 3) threw deep. Will you then admit I'm not fabricating? Or will you just continue being an ass?

In the first game of the year, the Bill Bradley Horns lost (that almost never happens). In the second game, we tied a respectable Houston team. In the third, Darrell Royal puts in a scappy underweight short running QB named James Street. He won twenty in a row and two Natty's before graduating. God Bless Him.

Bobby Layne's (way before my time) Wiki page is worth a visit. Holy Fuck!

Born in Santa Anna, Texas, Layne grew up on a farm in Coleman County just north of Santa Anna. His father, only 36, died of a heart attack when Layne was eight years old. His mother, Bea, was so destitute, she could not afford to keep the family together. Layne's two sisters stayed with his mother while he was sent to Fort Worth to live with his aunt and uncle, Mimi and Wade Hampton. The Hamptons eventually adopted Layne and moved to Highland Park, Texas, which was then a suburb just north of Dallas. He attended Highland Park High School in University Park. Layne's best friend and football teammate was fellow future hall of famer Doak Walker, the Heisman Trophy winner in 1948 for the SMU Mustangs and a pro teammate with the Detroit Lions.

#3 player selected in '48 NFL draft. 3 NFL Championships with Lions.

Numerous records in college, some of which stood until Street and Vince came along.

And in baseball, one of the best pitchers ever to play at UT. Numerous records finally broken by Burt Hooton and this:

His NFL career had some controversy of interest.

The second paragraph is interesting. After Tua won the championship game this talk was getting out to the public. Saban drew the line in the sand and when Hurts officially crossed it, the switch was made. Maybe if Saban made it earlier his life is a lot easier that season.

He played well enough and the rest of what happened seemed to just work against a big time comfortable lead style of win.

I think you're being diplomatic here. We shouldn't expect a big time comfortable lead. This was the conference title game against a team stacked with blue chip talent through and through. I don't care that they don't have a perfect record and struggled in some games they shouldn't have. The same is true of us. Kirby, his faults aside, is an intense coach who coached his ass off in preparation for both games and in the game. That guy dots his i's and crosses his t's. Pedestrian QB performance isn't a realistic plan to beat Georgia nor win the playoffs.

Without penalties and missed FG it's a 2 score game going into halftime and likely never closes since Georgia can't do a 9 minute drive and would have to throw it a lot more and that kid couldn't throw for shit.

Counterpoint - One more TD cancels the missed FG and wins the game without ever going to OT. I think that TD was there to be had by a QB with more poise and pocket presence.

I'm literally watching Kirk Cousins do the same shit right now in the NFL against the Vikings as Quinn does on Saturdays.  Kirk is having his balls batted down, is missing throws, throws a terrible INT, and then he hits one beautiful deep ball for a 50 yard gainer.  Sound familiar?  Kirk Cousins sucks so fucking bad that the entire fandom wants Penix in ASAP and the Nat'l media is tearing him to shreds.  Yet Quinn is no danger of being benched for Arch.

What game was he watching?  The only teams that have given the Georgia D trouble have been dual threat running QBs.  Having an immobile QB holding the ball too long back there is not going to cut it.  Ewers didn't have any "clean pockets" because Georgia has a great DL and if you just stand there like a statue for three seconds you are going down.

Horns have been held under 20 points the last two games, you'd think a little light bulb might have gone off in Sark's head.  I'm sure it has, but he either too delusional or gutless to do what needs to be done to win the title.

What the fuck is happening with the offensive line here?  What is our RB even doing?  6 guys cannot block 4?  And Wisner looks like he is starting to run a route after running to middle to do nothing.

Or throw the ball to Golden on the crosser, instead of into double coverage, and the false start and missed FG doesn’t happen. Lots of plays in this game could have changed the results

Others worth noting
Robert Brewer 13-2
Randy McEachern 11-1
Rob Moerschell 9-0 (Akers started statue Rick McIvor in Cotton Bowl and lost to Georgia 10-9).

I was born in the 1960s, did not see any of 60s action, but have a couple of comments:

1. My favorite memory watching football with my dad was when we were sitting in the living room yelling at the TV all game while losing to Alabama in the 1982 CB.  We could FEEL the disgust coming from Robert Brewer as he called timeout and went to the sidelines.   WE ALL truly genuinely knew 'bama was coming with the blitz and back then teams did not change calls after a timeout.  Then the best call of the decade happened, with the QB draw.  I believe this is in the top three calls of the 80s and 90s decades, up there with the 90+ yard pass by Major against OU and the Ricky run for the Heisman.

I propose a new category, near legend.  Brewer is near legend.  If he doesn't call TO that call never happens.  I remember only one game Brewer lost, a game against SMU, when SMU had that lucky pass that bounced off our DB and into a receiver's hands, resulting in about a 70 yard TD pass.  I think Jitter Fields was on the field for that play and the infamous 1984 CB.   Ponies were lucky, lucky that game.

2.  Two QBs who could have completely changed the game, had the chemistry been there with wide receivers

a. Rick McIvor.  Rick had the strongest arm in Texas history.  I saw him in person against the Ags one year in Austin.  We were losing, Rick drops back, throws about a 60 yard pass in the air it hits the WR in the chest and falls to the ground.   We lost the game.  Rick had only one game when he somehow got lucky and put it all together, against Aggy in the 1983 game.    Plenty of drops whenever Rick played.  Did players not practice enough in the 80s?

b. Simms.  I remember one of those Holiday Bowl losses to Oregon or whomever, when Simms is throwing bullets to receivers in the end zone and they were dropping all of them.  The excuse given was the receivers were freshmen.  Obviously it improved to some extent, but all most people remember is the game against Colorado, the interception that knocked Cedric Benson and Mike Williams out of the game.   I believe there was a fundamental difference that does not exist in today's game.  It seems like QBs and WRs are much better at being on the same page, compared to then.  I think with the coaching of today, a Simms type player develops much better and wins more games.

It occurs to me that maybe Sark's casual attitude about not beating teams too badly has possibly permeated the entire offense. (We didn't see that on the D, which has its own coordinator.) Sark is hurting this team too and needs to tighten things up. I don't recall Saban as being afraid to run up the score as he dominated college football.

Seems I heard a story from one of the Cowboy offensive lineman about playing for Landy - that they could beat an opponent 45-0 (which they did a lot of back in the day) and they would go in for the Monday Game films and get their asses chewed out up one side and down the other for the fuckups they made.

Sark needs to up his game.
