Quinn "La Joya" Ewers - The Man The Myth The Mullet

@BurntEyes

Here are some examples of good play from the first half (I'm displaying these as links because Youtube bitches about logging in when playing these embedded):

Point here is that Quinn did many of the things that you said he didn't. Our offense bogged down because of missed plays and penalties. It can't be all on Quinn. Someone else has to step up to: Golden needs to catch that TD, Wingo needs to catch the ball in general, the line needs to block better (particularly run blocking), we have to stop committing stupid holds that don't even affect the play, we have to grab fumbles when they happen, we have to block on an INT when it'll score a TD, we have to make FGs.

I don't know how many times it's be rewashed, but have a non-mobile QB causes substantial issues in the running game with good defensive teams. Georgia1 and Georgia2 out front should have told you.

Now to your videos, how many were in the redzone?

What area have I and others been specifically pointing out as the problem area.

How many TDs did we score in the redzone vs Georgia2?

Are there other areas that need work, yes. Have I denied that at any point, no. Have I also pointed it out multiple times on this very page, yes.

Have you, at any point, acknowledged that Quinn has some issue? Not in this post. Are you willing to acknowledge Quinn had some major issues in the redzone? I'm doubtful.

Are you willing to admit using Arch much more frequently in the redzone against Georgia could have potentially increased our odds of scoring? I'm doubtful.

Is this a binary Quinn only issue? No.

Is our lack of success in redzone against Georgia and other teams during the season something that should be addressed by our HC? Absolutely. Is Arch the answer? Sadly, we don't know but MAYBE. Should we know the answer? Absolutely! Is Quinn the answer? No is the clear correct response.

You guys are a fucking beating. Quinn wasnt perfect but played well enough for us to win. Two makeable field goals missed. Auburn hits one of those and this conversation is completely different.

This is such a stupid take, if Quinn played well enough to win, Texas would have won the game. He's a 3rd year starter at QB, and the the offense has consistently had problems scoring in the RZ for 3 seasons now. There has been 1 constant on offense the last 3 years.

Great stuff... this is on the mark.

Texas needs some offensive players to step up more on critical plays to move the chains and score more TDs.  Hope Sark can get our guys to relax, focus and play with confidence again.

Work some magic Sark and get this offense and team rolling through the playoffs... 🤘

Its also the defense. Played great all game, but had some poor moments also. Georgia ran for 120-140 yards in the second half with a back-up QB. I believe the big run from Etienne came off poor alignment issue. They gave up a QB draw on a critical 3rd down in OT, when the world should have expected that. You want to win Championships you have to make plays in critical moments.

This is one of those games where Quinn threw a few balls that hit the receivers in the fucking breadbasket on dimes and they just didn't catch them for touchdowns. The kicker also missed 2 very fucking makeable field goals and the ST unit gave up a 4th down conversion that would have ended the game because they inexplicably weren't in punt block against a backup punter.

You asked about this ball. Quinn sees that on the receiver break the DB is playing him inside out. It's the receiver who doesn't recognize where the ball should be thrown. This is ball highlighted in red literally thrown right in line with the receiver. If he just looks over the other shoulder its an easy catch. Ball is thrown on the break.

As a receiver you see the trajectory here that it's going to be over the other shoulder.

Screenshot(630).thumb.png.c4380085ec0a77c0899e94026b89959e.png

Why are you still doing this below?

You guys are constantly griping about not throwing a receiver open. This is what throwing someone open looks like when the receiver is incapable of making any adjustment. Does anyone here think Golden doesn't make this play?

You defending this throw is so on brand and completely unsurprising. Quinn can see the whole field while the WR has his back turned, but CLEARLY it's the WR's fault he didn't find the ball in time. Give me a fucking break.

You said someone needs to make a play, but apparently Quinn gets a pass here. The fact is that Quinn made that play so much harder on Moore than it needed to be. There was so much open field towards the back pylon and there was no help coming. It should have been 6 and the reason it wasn't is because of a poorly placed throw. End of story.

This clip confirmed my feelings immediately after the pick that Quinn limp-dicked this throw. Half-assed it and then turned away from a hit that was still 2 steps away when he released the ball. I won't say it, but there are plenty others on this board who have pointed out this type of action from him.

There are plenty of other NCAA QBs that step into that and at least put it there on time, because they're not scared of being hit. But as Sark says, sometimes it's just "bad luck".

Yes, and despite all that, Wingo was open and he underthrew it. He makes that pass and we win the game everything is different right now. Never mind the great catches or the YAC our WRs generated in this game to boost up that 358 yards. Texas needs a version of Quinn we have seen 1 or 2 times in his 30+ games started to win the championship, otherwise everything else is just bullshit but a fun discussion nonetheless.

How many field goals tries were there in total? 7. Were we in the redzone all 7 times? Yes. Are field goals the preferred outcome in the redzone? No. Did we try and use our mobile QB in the redzone? No. Did one of them get longer due to QB performance? Yes.

So, either you'd rather trust the outcome of a conference championship game to a kicker, or you can acknowledge that our QB didn't perform great in the redzone and neither did our HC. Are there others to blame, sure. But riddle me this, who, on any football team are the 2 most important people?

Dude the margin for error Quinn gave the rest of the team was enormous and they fucked it. Quinn doesn't have to be perfect to win with this roster.

Plenty of walk off kicks, and games won by kickers in College and NFL. So yeah, it's fine to kick FGs its not preferred.

Nobody is asking him to be perfect, but when the entire fucking world sees his issues, maybe it's actually a problem.

Yes, field goals are acceptable, but kicking field goals on 7 trips to the red zone sure as fuck isn't for a team that wants to win a championship, or for any team that wants to win a game.

And we fucking didn’t.

So many plays you can go after. One of those missed FGs never should have happened. Poor read and a dropped int, ball should have went to Golden for an easy first down. ST gives up a 1st down, but the defense allows Georgia to get an extra 60 yards. We can go back and forth on this. Georgia just played better in critical moments. It is the nature of an overtime game.

Bolden was higher but only on 5 plays.

It is a team loss.  As codaxx said, lots of opportunities for plays.  No one made that play to push us over the top.

For PFF, one thing I’d say is that it’s best to compare position to position.  Several weeks ago, I looked and there were about as many QBs over 90 as all other positions combined.  And my general observation is many guys take hits to their grade as competition increases.  I think that’s less impactful to QBs as it’s less about matchup for them.  Course they put some voodoo on the final numbers so part is certainly unknown.

I mean they didn't. The kicks are so easy to point at. Georgia didn't block those. The kicker just fucking missed. Both made makes it a not that close game and one made is survival and win in regulation.

They didn't play better in critical moments where only Quinn was involved they just fucking lucked into a shitload of penalties and missed fucking field goals.

NFL lite - every game in the playoff is probably gonna be somewhat close. It is what it is. Win that day and move on. The elite teams will come down to particular plays to win or lose. The only blowout I see in the playoff is the nc game when we blowout notre dame.

Yes. He certainly missed the 42 yards. I dont really fault him much on the 52 yarder, that is usually no better than a coin flip in college football. Saying the kicker needs to go 6-6 to win the game, ignores how badly the offense was in the red zone.

Ewers had 175 air yards and 183 YAC. The Moore td reception was 41 yards and I believe the biggest chunk play from a throw 5 yards or less.

Now do Quinn. He certainly can't be expected to make every throw perfectly and when he does he has receivers drop big time plays and it's his fault?

He did enough. He didn't put the team on his back and force a win. Both are true.

The team absolutely fucking took defeat from the jaws of victory. This wasn't some game where Georgia was in it at all, Texas let them hang around with mistakes and they scored late on a long converted drive that chewed 9 minutes of time where their backup QB couldn't throw anything remotely resembling a downfield throw and they were playing 6 fucking yards off the LOS. Then the DPI and inexplicable defense shitting the bed in OT.

Quinn played very well. Pull your heads out of your asses. I can't believe I'm the one defending this shit. No one thinks Quinn fucked it or shit down his leg. People think Quinn didn't become a legend and hero his way to a win, especially in OT. That's fine, but blaming Quinn for the loss is absurd and stupid.

Got it, all 10 players on offense need to execute perfectly 100% of the time, while the multi-million dollar QB needs only to execute a part of the time. Executing doesn't mean throwing a pass to the right location, it also entails knowing where to throw the ball in the 1st place.

It's also important to mention that Auburn is no better than a coin flip on FGs outside 40 yards this year. So I don't know where this wishcasting that Auburn "should" have made both of those FGs is coming from. If he was Justin Tucker, sure he "should" be 6/6 because he was one of the best kickers in the country while he was in Austin. Auburn hasn't been one of the best kickers of shit while he's been here, and has regressed from the past three years from "serviceable" to "needs to be upgraded immediately." It didn't take this game for me to realize that, and I'm not sure where this 6/6 standard for Auburn is coming from. He is who he has been.

Not putting some responsibility for the loss in a championship game on the QB where a team scored 1 TD in 7 trips is just insane. It's fucking crazy talk. Saying it was everyone BUT the QBs fault goes beyond fanboi crazy. It's just fucking regarded, and you know it.

Did Quinn throw an INT in the redzone during Georgia2?

Did he miss some open receivers in for easy TDs in Georgia2?

Yes? Then he's at LEAST partially responsible right?

I mean at least a little bit right? A modicum? A tiny wafer thin mint worth of responsibility?

No? None? Zero?

He played good enough. Inclusive of all those things for the team to win.

Would have been great for him to do any one of those things different, but it wasn't a win condition. The win conditions were plentiful outside of those and those are actually much further down the list.

That's all I'm saying. I'm not saying we got godmode Quinn I'm saying we didn't get that and he's just who he is. A pretty good QB in an insanely talented offense with a brilliant play-caller.

He was nowhere near bad enough to pull for Arch, but situationally Sark did the team a disservice by not having arch with at least 5-6 more snaps especially in the RZ.

A brilliantly insane play caller?? Who did the team a disservice by not running some Arch packages in the RZ?

And yes, Quinn is who he is, and he isn't good in the redzone against a good to decent defense.

And I never have suggested Sark should have pulled him in this game. Rather than without a LOT more of Arch in the redzone our issues will continue. At that's been the general sentiment by most.

But you can't keep completely giving Quinn a solid pass. It's crazy talk.

People think Quinn didn't become a legend and hero his way to a win, especially in OT. That's fine, but blaming Quinn for the loss is absurd and stupid.

You are trying to make this out like I said Quinn lost this game. I said literally said Quinn didnt lose the game, he just did not win the game multiple times. You can say that for a lot of Texas players. Only player I cant think of having a bad play was Makuba.

3 just had a shit day on defense. That long etienne run 3 has no idea where the play is, zero clue. Burke loses the edge so badly I have to think 3 was contain on it? Mukuba whiffed on a tough angle, stud on stud it happens.

Technically Bolden was rated higher (89 vs 86). It was Ewers highest rating this year, just didn’t get it done in the red zone.

Oline other than DJ Campbell graded poorly.

that is interesting, because it appeared DJ was pulled late in the 4Q

What? He played pretty fucking good man. Idk what game you watched.

Is the bar so low for Quinn where that was "pretty fucking good"? I'd hate to see how bad he needs to be to say he didn't play well. He threw 2 picks. Georgia dropped a very easy one in the redzone, too. Led one single TD drive. Had 3 drives in a row to get into the endzone and win the game. He didn't. If he actually had a pretty good game, we win. But he wasn't and we didn't. He couldn't even outduel their backup QB.
