Huh? You compared Quinn’s qbr and Beck’s qbr and said we lost despite better qb play from quinn compared to beck. The last play of the game for Beck was the last play of the first half. When he went out of the game, Texas was winning 6-3. Not sure what you’re confused by.

Ok, I'll be more clear and less clever.  You're wrong.  Specifically, the part where you said:

The last play of the game for Beck was the last play of the first half.

Now is when you say "that doesn't count because... reasons."

He has also, in the last two seasons, lead us to eleven win seasons, won a conference championship and played for another, and got us into the CFP.

Yeah I'm not saying he is bad, he just isn't elite. He isn't out there commanding his troops and making plays.  He is executing what he is given, and he needs the people around him to make plays.  There is nothing wrong with that and you can win a lot of games with a QB like that.  We can win with Quinn at QB, I'm just not sure we want to be trailing in the last 2 minutes needing a score to win with him at QB.

Here's what Quinn has done so far since I started this highly scientific rating system:

1. Texas 49-17 vs. Florida. Score = 100.0

2. Texas 20-10 vs. Arkansas Score = 72.0

3. Texas 31-14 vs. Kentucky Score = 77.6

4. Texas 17-7 vs. Aggy Score = 89.1

5. Georgia 22-19 vs. Texas Score = 70.6

Here is how the playoff games will factor into the rating going forward:

6. First Round Game vs. Clemson. Sum Ewers QBR +10 for a team win -10 for a team loss.

7. Quarterfinal Game vs. Arizona State. Sum Ewers QBR +20 for a team win -10 for a team loss.

8. Semifinal Game vs. Oregon, Ohio State or Tennessee. Sum Ewers QBR +30 for a team win -10 for a team loss.

9. Championship Game vs. Some Asshole. Sum Ewers QBR +60 for a team win -10 for a team loss.

Here is our scale again, unchanged:

0-65.0 : THE ULTIMATE PUSSY : Sorry Quinn, you are officially and forever a Huge Pussy

65-75 : PRETTY MUCH A PUSSY : Quinn, you had so much potential but you ended up playing like a Pussy for us. There might be hope for you in the future though.

75-85 : KIND OF A PUSSY : Quinn, we would have had a real shot this season if you didn't play like a pussy one too many times. Good luck in the NFL though bro.

85-95 : MOST LIKELY NOT A PUSSY : Quinn did enough to win, but could he have done more? (I admit if we end up here the argument will go on. I'll take my chances)

95-100 : DEFINITELY NOT A PUSSY : You can say what you want about Quinn Ewers, but he ain't no pussy.

100+ : DUDE IS A BOSS : It turns out you guys have just been haters the whole time. Potential Longhorn Legend.

Quinn is sitting not-so-pretty at an average of 81.9, which is KIND OF A PUSSY. Pretty much the worst he could end up after the playoffs is PRETTY MUCH A PUSSY, which would be a drop of one category.

He could easily get to MOST LIKELY NOT A PUSSY with a few wins and solid performances. To get to DEFINITELY NOT A PUSSY he would probably have to at least make the championship game and play well.

Crunching a few numbers DUDE IS A BOSS is pretty much only achievable if he wins the whole fucking thing and plays out of his mind the whole time.

There's gotta be some 0.9x multiplier or other deduction factored in since Quinn was begging for booty pics. I mean, even Case was out there filming booty*.

  • Quinn Ewers
  • Chad Kelly
  • Johnny Manziel

That's the list.

List of Texas QBs that have won a Big 12 Title

  • Vince Young
  • Colt McCoy
  • Quinn Ewers
  • James Brown

I don't think it is evident at all that we could have done those things with "any number of different QBs". But if you actually mean a handful of the very best college football quarterbacks to play over the last 3 years, then sure, we could have done those things with them.

Our offense has regressed this year. Quinn has regressed this year. Part of that is personnel changes. Part of that is injury. Part of that failure to elevate play. Quinn has still been a very good quarterback for the horns overall and it is stupid to suggest that replacing him with just any other QB would have result with the same success.

I'm very confused. Folks in this thread have repeatedly said the QB is the most important position and that is why they get the criticism and the credit. That's why we're justifying tearing apart the performance of our starting QB despite him being objectively the best player on our offense on Saturday.

I agree. It is a team game. That doesn't change the fact that the list of QBs involved in those two groupings is pretty exclusive and a fairly elite group. I don't buy that we have the same success with just any other QB. It doesn't match historical precedent at all.

But sure, let's look at another position grouping, say RB.

Texas Big 12 Championship teams

  • 1996 - Priest Holmes and Ricky Williams
  • 2005 - Jamaal Charles and Selvin Young
  • 2009 - Fozzy Whittaker and Tre Newton
  • 2023 - Jonathon Brooks and CJ Baxter

CFP QBs by QBR

2 Kurtis Rourke, Indiana
3 Will Howard, Ohio St
4 Drew Allar, Penn St
5 Sam Leavitt, Arizona St
6 Riley Leonard, ND
7 Cade Klubnik, Clemson
8 Kevin Jennings, SMU
9 Maddux Madsen, Boise St
10 Quinn Ewers, Texas
11 Nico Iamaleava, Tenn
12 Gunnar Stockton, Georgia*

*Carson Beck would be ranked 6th if healthy.

So by QBR Quinn and Nico are the two worst QBs outside of the guy making his first start.

We'll see just how good some of these QBs are that have played different versions of nobody all season. Madsen sucked vs. UO, Rourke completely no showed OSU & wasn't very good against UM, Klubnik is known, Leavitt has feasted on some shitty Big 12 teams but that's not happening in the playoffs & he won't be able to lean on Skattebo avg. 6+ a carry, & Howards performance vs Michigan is enough to let me know he's still the same Will Howard and not anyone we should worry about. I don't know, just from what I've seen this season I'd still have Quinn in the 3-6 range. Gabriel is tops & then you can choose between Allar, Leonard, Howard, Ewers, Klubnik, & Jennings. Any of them could have a big game and lead their team to victory or be a turnover machine or just complete ass and cause their team to lose.

Hey man, how about not jumping in the middle of a conversation you ain't having if you're not going to bother paying attention? I'm simply responding to the idea that we could have replaced Quinn with any joe quarterback over the last 3 years and had the same success. It is a nonsense argument. Quinn has been a good QB for us.

Let's not tear down a guy that has won a lot of games for the burnt orange. He could be better. He isn't perfect. There are better QBs, especially based on his performance this year. But completely dismissing his accomplishments and pretending we would be better off with anyone else is fucking stupid. We've seen where "anyone else" gets us over the last decade.

So Beck missed half the game and was involved in the same amount of TDs as Ewers who played the entire game.

Hard to quibble with Ewers' first two seasons where the only real knock on him was his propensity towards injury. I didn't like how we ended the final drive against Washington but hell, we got there and Ewers was a huge part of it. And he started this season well but (again) got hurt. He's been a shadow of himself since coming back. The 2024 version of Ewers, post-injury at least, is barely passable. Sure, we're winning games but that's mostly due to a historically good defense. We normally don't do dick in the second half. I firmly believe that Ewers is broken physically and is probably slightly skittish due to the multitude of injuries over his career and this year in particular.

Does this mean I want to see Arch in there instead? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe go fuck yourself. I think he'd ultimately do better vs this version of Ewers, which is not anywhere close to the best Ewers has given us in his career. QE had pretty good numbers on the surface in the SEC title game but when we needed him to make a play the most, he wasn't able to do it. At a minimum, I'd like to see Arch get 10-12 meaningful snaps per game moving forward -- at least until Ewers is totally healthy (which I admit don't think will happen again this season).

Last year's team and this, with Sam Ehlinger, you can make the argument is looking for back-to-back MNC's.  QE is a good, but not great college QB.  He struggles massively with making quick reads, recognizing defensive coverages, and staying healthy.  He's not willing any team to victory.  He's good enough to maintain success, but with the weapons around him, he's woefully inadequate.  Hell, I'd argue a healthy David Ash on this team performs better than a healthy QE.

Sam would be an upgrade this year, at least post injury. I don't know about last year. Quinn played pretty fucking well. But that's sort of my point, Sam isn't just a joe schmoe QB. He was, particularly for our offense, a very good college QB.

Last year the defense was meh but they made the stop at the end leaving it up to Quinn and the offense to win it. This year, we don’t win as many games without the defense. We haven't scored too many points in the second half, so the defense had to clamp down hard for us to have the record that we have now. Our second half offensive malaise needs to be figured out. We can't seem to recover from any adversity in the second half.

QE had some good games, but also shit the bed games as well.  He's frustratingly easy (apparently) to confuse when his running game is contained.  As mobile as he seems to be, he also seems incapable of moving around in the pocket to extend plays, especially stepping up and into the pocket.  He flushes, often back and to the right and he's no danger to run anymore like he used to be.

THIS is what I'm pulling my hair out about - teams are keying on the run, disguising their coverages, and our O-coordinators and QB seem incapable of attacking them and picking them apart.  The sole TD Saturday was a great individual play and a broken tackle.

I also think at this point we need to quit trying to make the pre and post injury a debate because it's been roughly 9 weeks including a bye that he's been like this. It is who he is at this point of the season.

I think our offense is bad in the redzone. I don't think it is all Quinn. Sark's schemes just don't work as well in a compressed field. We rely on explosives and when you're within the 20, you don't have room for those explosives. A running QB may open things up that Sark isn't able to do with our current team. I think 90% of our redzone problems are a lack of any real power rushing attack. If we had absolutely exceptional QB play, we could get around it. But that doesn't mean our inability to score is because of the QB.

I'm sure Sark, if he is being honest, knows that QE has regressed...injury or otherwise.  Not having Baxter certainly limits our running against a team like Georgia.

Because our defense is elite, Sark trusts QE to manage the game and minimize turnovers.  We have been playing not to lose since QE came back - our defense gives us that chance against most opponents not named Georgia.

And as bad a the SEC CCG was, was still had a chance to win it.

Manning, in his time starting this year made some bonehead plays and some sensational plays.

Yes, we would have loved to see more Manning packages inside the 25 before we got to OT, but there weren't that many true inside-the-25 opportunities and think Sark doesn't trust Manning in a big game situation to be slinging too many balls beyond RPO.

Guessing we will see a number of packages for Manning in the red-zone when the opportunity presents itself.

Coach brought up the reads in the red zone. Mentioned the Wingo throw into double coverage in the endzone on the last drive regulation. Trips on the right and Wingo solo on the left. Cb and Safety over Wingo. We worked to the side where Georgia has a 2 on 1 advantage. Should be working the trip side. Golden comes open on the crosser. Then brought up Blue being wide open on the incompletion to Moore in the endzone on the angle route. That one seems a bit questionable as Moore was open and in single coverage

The constant is Sark my man. And while we have had good running backs, our running scheme isn't and hasn't been about bully ball. The stuff Sark does just doesn't work as well in the redzone. His 2020 Alabama offense could turn to bully ball when it needed to. We haven't been able to. Our line just hasn't been good at that.

I don't understand your insistence that everything be on our QB. It is perplexing. But I also know you're just trolling and for whatever reason get a kick out of trolling our own fans. It is sad and pathetic, but you do you.

We hit Golden in the ez and the ball went right through his hands. We got an RB out in space 1v1 against a safety and he made zero effort to shake him. Then the penalties. Quinn missed some plays but made some plays that should've worked out. When you throw a ball the guy on the other end has a play to make too.

The kicker missed 2 makable kicks and receivers dropped was it one or two touchdowns? What is your point? People decide to pick one particular play to "prove" a point. It's nonsense.
