A B- isn't a failing grade or even close to failing. It's doing what you need to do and making a few mistakes while doing absolutely nothing exceptional or impressive. That's what it is. Slightly better than bare-ass minimum. Good job. Polite golf clap. Great win and let's keep it moving.

The INT wasn't really Quinn's fault, but a Clemson DB also dropped a ball that Quinn threw right into his hands on the softest, dumbest throw of the game.

Regarding the bolded part, he wasn't going to light it up in the air regardless of our running game. Sell that shit to someone who hasn't watched all his games.

It's fine, it is what it is. And what it is is thoroughly decent.

That was a route miscommunication. The throw looked bad because the receiver wasn't there.

I just re-watched all the offensive series. Quinn was solid. As said, the one INT was not his fault. The other almost INT looked like miscommunication with Wingo, not sure who fucked up there.

Our passing attack was pretty much paint by numbers. Lots of first read open guys, everyone executed well. The only time things got squirrelly were due to Sark's insistence to run a lot slow developing screens. Quinn did a great job getting off a screen pass to Helm before getting BLASTED. Great presence and scramble run for a 1st down on 3rd and 3. The deep ball to Golden was probably in the air too long, but that's just the way Quinn throws them at this point. But his placement was excellent, leading Golden correctly. My favorite play by Quinn was probably on the 3rd and 9 in our own territory with 5 minutes left. He didn't feel pressure and stayed patient before finding Blue on the sideline for a crucial 1st down that basically ended the game.

I give Quinn an A- for this game, which was definitely set on Easy Mode.

I see no reason not to feel very confident about him having success and playing well vs. Arizona State.

He connected on a post route. At this point, I'm not going to be too picky on what that looks like. Oddly enough, if he had thrown that route skinnier like he normally does (and the receiver responds), we probably score there. But yeah, he either needs to put some more zip on that or throw it earlier.

Fire off the ball and break when you git the receiver to turn their hips. Expect the ball on the outside to use the sideline to protect the pass.

Clemson D hasn't stopped a decent run game all year and their secondary is questionable at best. Their redzone D has been horrible all year and their DC is a fucking idiot that even Billy fucking Lucci called out for being stupid.
Several posters including me called all this out on CTJs "Why we stomp Clemson" thread.
I'm with CTJ. This was a good B- performance by Quinn against a questionable defense. It's not a gloating game for haters nor lovers.
The majority of the issues in the offensive game last night from the offense fall directly on Sark.

CTJ didn’t give him a B-.

100% this

We just watched a game where the guy on the other side, with way less talent against way harder competition, (often) looked absolutely brilliant and we're jumping with joy over a B- performance. It was fine. It was good enough to beat the #12 seed in the 12-team playoff. Anyone who looks at it and genuinely thinks Oregon, Georgia, and Ohio State should be scared are delusional.

It's good enough, hopefully. And I do hope it continues and improves so my Longhorns win it all. And when they do, I'll be very appreciative of Quinn's efforts and play. We were sold Lando Norris but we got Gus the Bus Driver. I'm very happy Gus is driving the bus fairly well and I believe Gus can drive that bus to the NC. But don't try to make me think Gus is anything but Gus.

Thanks, Gus.

Clemson has better receivers than we do. Cade was absolutely dealing last night though. Played his best game of the season and still lost by 14.

Even though I have some issues with Sark's playcalling this game, there were 2 plays that I liked seeing.

3rd and 13 from around our own 40, we let Quinn go deep. Don't think it was the greatest throw, but the DB was compromised and ended with Defensive PI.

2nd and 10 from our own 1 or 2 (after the 4th and goal stop), Quinn throws a nice sideline fade route to Wingo in 1-on-1 coverage. Would have been an easy pitch and catch, DB mauled Wingo for PI. Big first down there.

I've decided to extend this rating system into the playoff.

Here's what Quinn has done so far since I started this highly scientific rating system:

1. Texas 49-17 vs. Florida. Score = 100.0

2. Texas 20-10 vs. Arkansas Score = 72.0

3. Texas 31-14 vs. Kentucky Score = 77.6

4. Texas 17-7 vs. Aggy Score = 89.1

5. Georgia 22-19 vs. Texas Score = 70.6

Here is how the playoff games will factor into the rating going forward:

6. First Round Game vs. Clemson. Sum Ewers QBR +10 for a team win -10 for a team loss.

7. Quarterfinal Game vs. Arizona State. Sum Ewers QBR +20 for a team win -10 for a team loss.

8. Semifinal Game vs. Oregon, Ohio State or Tennessee. Sum Ewers QBR +30 for a team win -10 for a team loss.

9. Championship Game vs. Some Asshole. Sum Ewers QBR +60 for a team win -10 for a team loss.

Here is our scale again, unchanged:

0-65.0 : THE ULTIMATE PUSSY : Sorry Quinn, you are officially and forever a Huge Pussy

65-75 : PRETTY MUCH A PUSSY : Quinn, you had so much potential but you ended up playing like a Pussy for us. There might be hope for you in the future though.

75-85 : KIND OF A PUSSY : Quinn, we would have had a real shot this season if you didn't play like a pussy one too many times. Good luck in the NFL though bro.

85-95 : MOST LIKELY NOT A PUSSY : Quinn did enough to win, but could he have done more? (I admit if we end up here the argument will go on. I'll take my chances)

95-100 : DEFINITELY NOT A PUSSY : You can say what you want about Quinn Ewers, but he ain't no pussy.

100+ : DUDE IS A BOSS : It turns out you guys have just been haters the whole time. Potential Longhorn Legend.

Quinn is sitting not-so-pretty at an average of 81.9, which is KIND OF A PUSSY. Pretty much the worst he could end up after the playoffs is PRETTY MUCH A PUSSY, which would be a drop of one category.

He could easily get to MOST LIKELY NOT A PUSSY with a few wins and solid performances. To get to DEFINITELY NOT A PUSSY he would probably have to at least make the championship game and play well.

Crunching a few numbers DUDE IS A BOSS is pretty much only achievable if he wins the whole fucking thing and plays out of his mind the whole time.

GoodLuck.thumb.jpg.36144ffd061d2704d967ea33fb36c3a0.jpg

1. Texas 49-17 vs. Florida. Score = 100.0

2. Texas 20-10 vs. Arkansas Score = 72.0

3. Texas 31-14 vs. Kentucky Score = 77.6

4. Texas 17-7 vs. Aggy Score = 89.1

5. Georgia 22-19 vs. Texas Score = 70.6

6. Texas 38-24 vs. Clemson Score = 97.5 (QBR 87.5 +10 for win)

While there were definitely a few nits to pick, Quinn had a very solid game overall, and the one pick wasn't his fault. He bumped up his average to 84.5, which doesn't change his category from KIND OF A PUSSY.

I say keep healing up, play with confidence & Fucking Hook 'em! Let's keep this train rolling!

First round QBRs:

1. Will Howard 98.8
2. Quinn Ewers 87.5
3. Cade Klubnik 83.5
4. Riley Leonard 66.8
5. Kurtis Rourke 63.6
6. Nico Iamaleava 62.0
7. Drew Allar 56.8
8. Kevin Jennings 13.8

Reminder that there were plenty of surly posters over the last few weeks wishing we had any of the other playoff QBs.

Has he had the ability to do that all season or was that something new for the playoff?

Sark coaches NFL style offense. That means that the QB is responsible for calling the protection scheme, making audibles, reading the defense before AND after the snap, and then delivering the ball to the right target in stride at the right time.

When you see a defender go through unblocked, it's sometimes the OL fault, but sometimes the QB made the wrong read and called the wrong protection.

Good defenses, like OU, Georgia, and Texas, excel at making the QB guess wrong. OU's in particular is really amazing to watch, the way they consistently show one look pre-snap, then like a coordinated ballet switch to another at the snap. It's why Venables' defenses typically take a couple of years before they really start to work. (Of course, how good they are doesn't matter if their offense sucks balls and the opposing offense can beat you anyway.)

Other than the miss on 4th down, this was Quinn's most frustrating throw.

Late with no zip. It looked like a high school throw. But, Ewers managed the game well and did enough to win. A similar performance will probably beat ASU, but we'll need more against Oregon or tOSU in the semis.

Remember in the 90s there were several baseball movies that involved teens managing or playing for an mlb team?   There was one where this teen managed the Minnesota twins.  On the team was an old player who was well past his prime.  One game guy goes up and hits a seeing eye single up the middle. And the kid, who was pretty knowledgeable about baseball pumps his fists and leans over to his mentor and says “see he’s still got it.” Mentor kindly lectures him about how his expectations are so low that he’s excited over a weak ground ball that barely snuck by the middle infield

no Quinns not washed up. His best years are ahead of him. But our standards for him are so low that we are using a pretty pedestrian performance to validate his greatness.  He played ok.  Didn’t really hurt us but that wasn’t John Elway out there

If a player that usually throws the ball in the stands doesn't there will usually be a reason. Looked to me like RPO. Line is running blocking so you have to pull the ball and throw it immediately as to not get called for linemen downfield. Saw something he didn't like and aborted the throw and left the pocket. At that point any throw, inbounds or not, past the LOS is a penalty.

That was a bad play. That was the play Sark was pissed and screaming at Ewers. The OL downfield theory is nonsense. Even if you believe it, you have to have no football IQ to pretend it justifies the slide.  1st and 15 >>>> 2nd 14. Quinn was good vs Clemson, no need to try and pretend he was perfect

I don't consider above median or above average good.

I've watched Clemson a lot, particularly the SMU game but others.

Stanford, Florida State, Wake Forest, South Carolina (L) and Citadel are the only teams they heald to less than 20.

NS State, Georgia, Virginia, Louisville, SMU all put up 30+.

Subjective I guess, but that doesnt seem good to me.

Correct.  I just posted it -- #23 in DFEI.  The NCAA site is borked on total defense, or I'd look that up.

Anyway, it's a boring argument that I will concede, mostly because I no longer give a damn.

B+ performance his best since Florida. The guy on the other side gets an A and that’s what A performances look like imo.

Klubnik looks really good, but I think a lot of QB’s would have loved to have Moore up against that strange version of Muhammed we saw last night.

At worst Quinn is gonna be 20-5 as a starter. Crazy to think half the fan base wants to bench him. And I get it but damn 20-5. After watching Swoopes, heard, Kai Locksley (be recruited for qb) Casey Thompson and Hudson card. I do appreciate you, Quinn. Shut all the haters up; including me.

The spying was dumb but they stop us there if #20 sticks with his shallow flat responsibility. He was worried about Golden crossing beyond the sticks but if he stays shallow that makes the throw to Golden almost impossible to get over him but to Golden in time to keep him in bounds.

People only think Klubnik was much better than Ewers if they're Texas fans. If you were a Clemson fan you would have noticed Klubnik's mistakes, including huge mistakes in game clinching situations. Just check out the 4th and 6 where we sealed the game. Taafe blows up the crossing route because he committed immediately to it. The proper read for Klubnik there is to hit the post route which was open because their slot had two steps on our DB. That would have made the game 38-31 with an onside kick to come.

But QB haters don't notice that on other teams, just their own. Kind of like Klubnik throwing up jump balls that get caught because their WRs beat our DBs makes Klubnik better than when Ewers throws up competitive balls and our WR doesn't bring it down (Wingo at 5:00 in the 3Q - he was interfered with but going up for the ball at least draws the flag if you don't catch it), or bad throws to wide open receivers where their WRs save Klubnik (Antonio Williams on the sideline first play of 4Q), when it's the other team that's just the QB making a play. When it's your team that's a bad throw omg!

Neither Quinn nor Klubnick were perfect. Both made mistakes, but Clemson asked Klubnick to win the game for him. He had 56 plays were he threw or carried the ball vs the #1 defense in the country (coming into the game). I thought he was great. Both QBs got goods grades for the game, but Klubnick took a much harder test. Just to put this in context Klubnick had 3 TDs passes vs a defense that gave up 4 the rest of the season. His 336 passing yards were the most the defense has given up. 211 was the 2nd highest. I don’t think it is about hate, just giving a kid credit for a gutsy performance

Regardless of how you feel about it throwing it was not an option. Ideally you run and get some yards. He took off that way and for whatever reason decided not to take on the defender. Call him a pussy or whatever you want but that's what happened. I don't really care whether you think it showed low football IQ or not. People seemed to be confused as to why he did it so I explained the play.

I've been waiting for someone else to say this because had I said it we would've added 4 pages to this thread. Klubnik threw balls at receivers feet. Threw balls too wide out of bounds multiple times. Tried to throw a ball over Makuba and almost got picked. Tried to throw a ball backwards and pretty much fumbled, and even had the dreaded batted ball INT that we are on Quinn about. It's just the way they play spreading you out 4 and 5 wide and chucking it all over the lot looks pretty and piles up yards so fans tend to like it.

Nico has immense talent AND gives it his all, putting everything on the line for a first for down repeatedly.

But the team he’s on runs a shit tier scheme and Tennessee had a horrible game plan against Ostate. The fans still turned on him.

Now compare the criticism to what Quinn is getting. It’s night and day, we are all still rooting for him, it’s just our eyes tell us he’s got more in the tank.

It’s dumb takes like this that keep this thread going. You are just wrong. You don’t have to care about my opinion on your football IQ it’s straight math.. 3 chances to get 15 yards is easier than 2 to get 14. That is making the BS assumption that it is a 100% chance they throw the flag and the BS assumption he is looking to see where the OL are on the play. There was a reason Sark was screaming at Quinn about this. Just throw it away and move on. Quinn didn’t make a lot of mistakes, but this is clearly one

That's not how a person thinks in the flow of the game. You pull the ball and see you can't throw it. Next thought is shit I gotta run. You are not out there calculating how things are gonna work out yardage wise on a pad and paper. You know you cannot throw it late so you try to run. Then you don't wanna get hit when a defender comes free. Simple as that. Get over it.

Can’t believe some posters think Ewers didn’t have a good game. It was an A- performance. He didn’t make many mistakes. And just a reminder, every QB makes mistakes in a game. Most importantly, no interceptions that were his fault or fumbles.

As has been discussed before, he starts over Manning because he can read defenses better, and yesterday that led to several touchdowns. For Christ’s sake, Texas put 38 points on the board.

People still bagging on Ewers for yesterday are idiots. He may play more up and down games in the future, but yesterday he was very solid.

Finally, it’s important to realize that Sark has been purposely not going downfield as much as at other times. That might be a bit because of Ewers, but it has also been because the OL hasn’t pass protected well enough in some games and hasn’t executed the running game well enough. When that happens no qb is going to look great.

Ewers has deserved some criticism this year, but when he plays well he should also get some accolades.

You see quarterbacks all the fucking time do half ass throw aways while running towards sideline. Whether that be a regular throw, a shot put style throw, or some kind of underhand. Like what the actual fuck are you trying to say?
