Please point out where in that post, this thread or any thread I've said Sark doesn't know what he's doing, much less suggest I want to get rid of sark outside of game thread venting where I've never said we should fire Sark.

Moreover, I was talking about Quinn and his limitations. However, this particular dialog between us started with me actually giving a compliment to BOTH Quinn and Sark. Let's pause there a minute.

I was complimenting our QB and our HC.

Then you decided it was important to point out that's why Quinn was playing QB for Texas as well as noting he gives us our best chance to win.

After I complemented Quinn. I agreed but noted I reserved the right to point out issues in Quinn performance.

To which you responded that a lack of running performance is the only thing that hampers this offense.

That leads me to believe that your position is that any offensive issues we have are based purely on the run game and Quinn and the OC have zero culpability when teams scheme to stop Texas run game, force us to pass and succeed. We've struggled against every team that has a good defense and they scheme specifically to limit our run and force Quinn and thereby Sark to throw.

So, if Sark and Quinn can't overcome a defensive strategy to stop our run and force us to pass, the liability is purely on the offensive line and RBs. The HC/OC and QB are not culpable in any way? Is that accurate?

It's not the blocking scheme our HC/OC draws up? It's never the running plays our HC/OC draws up? It's never Quinn's fragile physicality? It's never Quinn’s lack of speed? It's never Quinn’s misread of a D? It's never a lack of adjustments by the HC to attack a D scheme set up to challenge us to throw? It's never Quinn's read of the DBs? It's never the passes Quinn throws? It's never Quinn's check downs passes? It's never Quinn not feeling pressure in the pocket?

Calm down man.

I really didn’t mean for it to sound like I was calling you out.

It looked like such an easy pitch and catch on the main feed.

but that sky cam feed, seeing what Quinn sees, looks like going through the eye of a needle to make that happen. … and covered 45 yards from the release to the catch. Right on the money. Just incredible.

That scenario, not 4th and 13, but 3rd and medium or 3rd and long at that part of the field, long FG range….in the past the blitz comes, protection doesn’t hold up and Quinn takes a sack that moves you out of FG range.  When I saw the defense creeping up I thought, we’re fucked.
That was amazing.  We’ve been on the other side of that.  (Fuck you Joe Burrows.)  To have converted that 4th down, it’s still hard to believe.

Well, let's see:

  1. You got that pass back in the '40s to Noble Doss
  2. The tipped pass game winner against UCLA
  3. The 4th down against Arkansas
  4. The 4th down against Notre Dame
  5. The game winner to Cash v. OU in 1989

Others receiving votes: Johnny Walker v. Arkansas in 1987ish, Applewhite to McGarrity for 97 yards.   What else?

It was Tony Jones against Arkansas in 1987.

Yeah man, Sark was always IZ based until he couldn't run it and then we switched to OZ. We can't come off the ball and move people at the guard and center spot. No one gets to the second level and so OZ is what we hang our hat on now. Trust me though. If Sark had a couple maulers inside he would switch back to IZ in a second. There is so much more you can do off of IZ. More importantly, play fakes off of OZ leave your quarterback exposed on the backside as the O-line dances to the left or right. If the ball doesn't come out right now the QB is just standing there with little to no protection. Even when you fake a stretch play and boot out the back a smart DE/Nickel can put a lot of pressure on you. That's what happened in the Vandy game. They kept firing the nickel while we were in play fake mode and caught us once on the boot and he tipped the ball leading to an int.

This is not to come at you just noting that Sark used to be an IZ guy.

Sark has always been a big IZ guy. He loves it for the RPO game. (see here for example).  Also, we ran a ton more IZ with Brooks last year.

I think our move to OZ is due as much to our backs this year as our OL.

Recency bias.

It's not even about recency....it's objectively true. A win and advance playoff game is far bigger game than a BCS bowl. Without that throw and catch we are at home but we're still in contention for a national championship. With Colt to Quan there was no chance at all we were getting a national title, the season was over regardless.

The book isn't written on this season. It's subjective not objective. I've had this discussion already and I've seen your posting, it's pointless.

So you're correct 100%.

Have a wonderful day.

It's not subjective. Objectively a win or go home game to keep your national championship aspirations is alive is a bigger game than a BCS bowl.  If you honestly believe a BCS bowl game = CFP game then LMAO at you.

One reason a hate the blitz on 4th and long. If the OL and RB (great block by Wisner I believe, stoned the LB) pick it up, its pretty easy read and throw for the QB.

The discussion is about best passing plays in Texas Longhorn football history. My ranking differs from yours, and these rankings are opinions not facts. It's opinion based. There is no mathematical formula.

Opinions are by definition subjective.

But you're absolutely right and I don't know what I'm talking about. You're suffering from no recency bias and the end results of the season will have no effect on where this stacks in Longhorn lore. Lore is fact and objective.

Sorry I wasted your time but at least I made you laugh.

This is 100% correct. There is no way Texas should have been in that situation. That never should have been a game. Never seen a game where every unit was so up down.

This is a pretty weird way to look at it.

The fact the play happened and we won the game is pretty damn significant. Does anyone remember that Kansas’ record was in 2004? It was 4-7. Vince Young’s 4th and 18 run saved the day, setting up winning that game, beating a top 25 A&M team the next week and going to the Rose Bowl.

Its a personal choice. I have this one lower, because it was vs an inferior team. If Texas has a game winning drive over OSU next week, I would put that above this. I know ASU is a playoff team in this new world, but they are not a high level team. Great moment still. reminded me of the Kansas conversion that was necessary in the old system to advance

Choking the ASU game away would've been an absolute disaster. I honestly don't know if Sark would've been able to recover from it.

In the moment, yeah it would have been. Because that’s how we always are after big losses.

Would it have been irrecoverable from for a coach? That feels a bit dramatic. Tony Bennett was the first coach to ever lose to a 16 seed in the NCAA tournament and won his only national title the next season.

I don't know that it would've been irrecoverable (hence "I honestly don't know..."), but I think there's a chance it could've been. All the positive momentum around the program would've done a 180.

I have it lower than colts for several several reasons. I wait to weigh the historical weight of a play until that chapter of history is finished. Should Texas go on to win the National Championship I would put 3 and 14 above. As I noted on the previous thread prior to the OSU win Texas had been in the FUPM 10 win seasons since 2005. This was Colts first step and the lead in to the 2009 season. OSU was second only to USc in attention in College football at the time with Bama about to make a run. It was a much bigger win in the College football world perception. Then and relative to who Texas beat now.

But like you said it's subject and I can see people's opinions differing from my own for whatever reason.

So, we are on the same page.

Oh we discussed it on the last page. There were some semantics about best pass vs best play. Vy and Kansas is definitely on my list as is 3 and 5, and VY to Limas vs OSU in the Shoe who was #3 at time.

Don't think anyone is diminishing it's significance. Rather we were having fun talking about amazing Texas QB moments and this is certainly on of them. But I was then informed opinions are fact based and objective. 😉

I guess we'll never know.

We are the only team with back-to-back playoff appearances, our two biggest rivals are stuck somewhere between inept and mediocrity, we just signed the #1 recruiting class in the country and we have Arch Manning waiting in the wings next year.

If that sort of positive momentum can be erased in one game then there wasn't that much momentum to begin with.

I've said for a while now that our run blocking next year will be far better than this year but our pass blocking will be slightly worse.

I've been a big Majors hater early on but he's arguably our second best OL and does well at center. The issue is our LG is complete fucking liability.

If next year’s c and lg will be better, why are they presumably on the sidelines right now?

I don't think next years C will be better overall but I do think the center depending on who it is will be more physically able to move people in run game than Majors. Conner is starting this year because of his pass pro. Conner is absolutely dog shit in run blocking and has been for two years. Majors has at least improved in that aspect to make him our second best this year.

Also we are asking for more pass pro this year with Quinn.

Next years OL has the potential to be a more physical front than this years and move people in the run game. They'll be weaker in pass protection as I mentioned earlier but Arch's mobility will assist them in that aspect.

And I'm okay not knowing what if.

I wouldn't go nearly as far as the person you were responding to, but it certainly would have tarnished the view of Sark nationally and put a pretty big negative period on Quinns season. But.. like I said, I don't really care about what ifs from the past. I'm hoping we can get past OSU, which I think will be a massive struggle and face ND/PSU (and I lean ND VERY heavy)

Same reason we all think Arch will be better than Quinn next year even though he’s not starting over Quinn this year. The current starters have the benefit of experience and time in the program. The guys not starting now will improve after a full offseason of continuing to learn the offense while getting starter reps.

We have 0 idea. I remember people coming after me when I said DJ has a lot a growth to do and struggles with stunts, when he opened the year as a starter. People said I took his freshman appearances too seriously. Well, how did that work out. It took him awhile to put it together. We have no idea what the OL will look like next year. Its not always plug and play. Guys like Banks are unicorns. Odds say first year starters will have their struggles. I hope they surprise, but any prediction on their play is pure speculation at this point. Only thing I am comfortable saying is Goosby should be solid in pass pro next year. The other 4, no fvcking idea. I hope they exceed expectations.

I'm not saying they're going to be a better unit as a whole. I just think they'll be better run blockers than this year but worse pass blockers than this year.

Lots of mysteries next year. Seriously, I'm of the opinion it will be a vastly different team. Dunno if that's good or bad yet. TBD

We are going to find out. I am not even sure what the run game is going to look like next year. Will it be heavy gap scheme, inside zone, or outside zone? How long does it take Sark and Flood to figure out which 5 gel the best? What scheme fits them?

I rewatched the game yesterday, and one play that seemed to get under fans' skin was the safety on Quinn.  In reality, that could have changed the game had he not reached out and grabbed the fumble.  It looked bad, but it was the best possible (bad) outcome.  Otherwise, ASU would have recovered it for a touchdown.

I think Texas has reached a point where even in a rebuilding year, they will be solid. I believe the floor on this program is 9 wins.

I absolutely hated that play call. Wish we would have went under center and did a FB dive or a sneak(even though it was Quinn) just to give us more space.

Goosby's minutes are a blessing in disguise for sure.  I'm not saying it's a net positive to lose Banks and Williams for multiple games, but going into next year Trevor is definitely going to be a lot more seasoned.
