Quinn "La Joya" Ewers - The Man The Myth The Mullet

It’s all related to his footwork. He sees pressure and his feet stop working. He has slow feet and it really shows up with pressure. There are other issues. The most worrying part of the Arkansas poor performance was there wasn’t much pressure

Disagree it’s just a feet mechanics issue.  He doesn’t actually have to be pressured to get nervous.  He just has to see a blitzer coming.  Their rushers may not even be engaged with our linemen before Quinn is trying to figure out what to do in a pocket that has yet to collapse.  That’s mental, not mechanical.

Why? He’s had more time learning the system than Quinn did.

Quinn was coming into a team that was 5-7, started Casey Thompson and Hudson Card the year before, and only had Hudson Card and Maalik Murphy to compete with.

He was also a highly touted transfer ($$$) who was brought in to be the savior at the position. Hudson Card wasn't gonna start over him unless he was significantly better.

Arch has the luxury of having Quinn, and even Maalik in front of him last year. Time to learn, mature, and refine before needing to do it full time.

Not being an asshole on the Internet.

Serious question. I think Quinn is a good college quarterback, not the awful cartoon figure caricatured at times here. But he seems more subdued, less sure of himself than last year. So, what happened?

Honestly, we found out he’s kind of a pussy that is afraid to get hit. Definitely not a VY “let your nuts hang” or a gritty no fear Ehlinger type. He’s also not a leader of men. Very timid and aloof on the sidelines. I’ve yet to see him pick the guys up and rally everyone in the face of adversity.

I suggest a Five Point Plan to settle this disagreement once and for all.

1. We watch the Texas vs. Florida game. Sum Ewers QBR +10 for a team win -10 for a team loss.

2. We watch the Texas vs. Arkansas game. Sum Ewers QBR +10 for a team win -10 for a team loss.

3. We watch the Texas vs. Kentucky game. Sum Ewers QBR +10 for a team win -10 for a team loss.

4. We watch the Texas vs. Aggy game. Sum Ewers QBR +10 for a team win -10 for a team loss.

5. We watch the next Texas game of the season (Bowl game, SEC Championship, or First round playoff). Sum Ewers QBR +10 for a team win -10 for a team loss -30 if this is a bowl game +10 if it's the SEC championship.

Then we find the average of these five sums. This gives us his measure on the ULTIMATE SCALE OF PUSSYTUDE/BOSSNESS (working title...in process)

0-65.0 : THE ULTIMATE PUSSY : Sorry Quinn, you are officially and forever a Huge Pussy

65-75 : PRETTY MUCH A PUSSY : Quinn, you had so much potential but you ended up playing like a Pussy for us. There might be hope for you in the future though.

75-85 : KIND OF A PUSSY : Quinn, we would have had a real shot this season if you didn't play like a pussy one too many times. Good luck in the NFL though bro.

85-95 : MOST LIKELY NOT A PUSSY : Quinn did enough to win, but could he have done more? (I admit if we end up here the argument will go on. I'll take my chances)

95-100 : DEFINITELY NOT A PUSSY : You can say what you want about Quinn Ewers, but he ain't no pussy.

100+ : DUDE IS A BOSS : It turns out you guys have just been haters the whole time. Potential Longhorn Legend.

(This is all completely arbitrary and not based on any kind of science or intelligence)

May the testes be with you, Quinn.

1. Texas 49-17 vs. Florida. Score = 100.0 (QBR 90.0 +10 for win)

2. Texas 20-10 vs. Arkansas Score = 72.0 (QBR 62.0 +10 for win)

So Quinn is pacing MOST LIKELY NOT A PUSSY, with an average score of 86.0 so far.

The arguments go on...

At this point, this seems like a fair assessment. I’ve tried to state away from condemning Ewers as a pussy, but I can see where it’s easy to lob that damning indictment at him. It’s clear that his game is finesse, not power and passion. He lacks the charisma, swagger, physical toughness, and durability that we want to see in our QB1. He’s a good college quarterback who has had flashes of great, but never elite. He’s good enough to get us to the CFP, but I’m not convinced about him leading the way to winning the whole thing. I’d love to be proven wrong and eat some crow.

Agree. The thought of pressure triggers the same response. He tends to throw off platform for no reason

He literally gave Quinn multiple times to prove he could throw downfield in the first half. Quinn proves he can’t, running was definitely not totally abandoned but it was 2 yards with a 4-8 sprinkled in not like it was working great.  That’s back to the game plan, if you can throw downfield it opens up the run. Sark has to throw out part of the playbook because he can’t trust his qb to throw downfield.  Some of ya’ll that blame Sark’s play calling  don’t understand football very much obviously.  Watch a game where Quinn is hitting downfield passes actually and see the difference.

He’s abandoned all passes except the we screen, fake wr backside screen to the rib, and curl route. There are a few isolated exceptions but this is our passing game. If that’s all throws Quinn can make we’ve been lied to for 3 years and Quinn shouldn’t be the start now.
I don’t believe that Quinn has forgotten how to the deep balls as soon as the qb wisperer got ahold of him. He made all of those throws in high school. We only go deep 2 or 3 times a game.

This year's QB draft class is not exactly great, so it is a good year for him to go pro.  NFL Draft Buzz has a QB ranking for the 2025 draft.

  1. Sanders
  2. Ward
  3. Ewers
  4. Milroe
  5. Nussmeier
  6. Beck
  7. Gabriel
  8. Altair
  9. Rourke
  10. Klubnick
  11. Dart

CBS has Ewers as the #3 QB and #18 overall prospect.
ESPN has Ewers as the #3 QB and #34 overall prospect.

We've seen so much of Ewers that most of us would declare "he's not the 3rd best QB coming out" or "he sucks" or whatever.  Sanders is the clear #1 QB (IMO).  After that, it's up in the air.
In 2024, 6 QBs were picked in the top-12 picks: Williams, Daniels, Maye, Penix, McCarthy, Nix.  The next QB - Spencer Rattler - was not picked until the 5th round.

Teams who may be looking for a QB - and be wiling to spend a high round pick on it.

  1. NYG
  2. Browns
  3. Panthers
  4. Raiders
  5. Dolphins
  6. Titans
  7. Rams

Very few new mock drafts have Ewers in the first round, but many have him in 2nd round.

Sark needs to make Quinn run the football. Everything with his pocket footwork is backpedaling.

On the first drive 3&9 sack, the OL has done a good job, there is 20 yards of green grass and three holes to choose from…….instead Quinn is in a trance looking downfield as he steps up and walks right into a sack from a fully engaged lineman with green grass all around.

He doesn’t even consider running even when the D is giving him 20 yards of space. Take the yards

Sanders looks like a Geno Smith starter kit. He will get the coach who drafts him in the first round fired.

I’ve been an ardent supporter of Quinn but after that game I’m over it. I didn’t even watch the game as I was hunting blue quail in terilingua. I got the recap from my brother and I watched some highlights. Arkansas is awful and the lack of pocket presence and big game ability has gotten worse now. I was holding out hope he would just be average or slightly above average but I was wrong. He’s broken. The first time he self sacks or panics and throws a screen for a big loss I hope sark pulls him against Kentucky and never looks back.

I won’t let having to watch Case McCoy and Tyrone Swoopes cloud my vision of what I expect from a 3-year stater who played in the playoff last season.

I think that is part of the problem. People won’t let go of the past. I remember 3 years ago when people said “well you have to start Ewers because he can throw the deep ball and it opens up Sark’s offense” and the dude has completed like 3 true deep passes in 3 years.

If it said anything other Ewers on the back of his jersey and he turned in the type of performances he did against OU, Georgia and Arkansas, every single person in this fanbase would be against him.

that's the point, Quinn is a normal qb average if you will. our qb play has been so bad that average qb play is defended to the end because we know what bad is. that's the crux of this thread. I actually think he's slightly above average and that's good enough to win with how good the players and team are around him. and he can always go on a heater even if not expected.

This would be the right strategy for the A&M game. We've been protecting Quinn since his injury, but hold nothing back in this game.

Literally give him a designed run early. Maybe it triggers something in his brain and gets his feet moving.

If yall think this is just our fanbase overreacting, listen to the national shows (Cover 3, McShay, Solid Verbal). They are all very harsh on who Ewers is as a QB.

at this point, I understand why we start Ewers, but we are capping our ceiling by starting him.

yep. if you bench ewers for arch at any point this season then anything short of a national title is a disaster. it would be such a huge and unneeded negative storyline for this team to have to deal with. it’s makes sense why sark would believe in his own ability to guide this team to a title with QE at the helm, and it’s certainly a much safer option than the alternative. still, barring some sort of divine miracle or disney movie, freaky friday, rookie of the year situation occurring with quinn, he is who he is, and who he is is not the type of qb or leader who can guide this team to reaching its full potential.

This is especially true given we have a 5 star QB with a good bit of experience now behind him.

We should not be afraid of Quinn getting injured. He needs to take the free yards with his legs especially since he has limitations in other areas.

He just has a terrible feel in the pocket. I don't think it's anything you can teach. You either have it or you don't.

There are times when there's space to the left or right and he will step right in the direction where there's pressure. His awareness in the pocket is bad.

What kills be is it didn’t used to be this way. He sets into defenders in clean pockets. Sits still at outside pressure instead of stepping up. He’s a mess right now. 9-1 is great. And he looked great against Florida down 4 starters in the secondary. It’s in there somewhere. Has to come out for a National Chanpionsiop

Exactly. It’s third and 9 from near midfield. Even if you don’t get the first you have a shot to maybe go for it on 4th. Lack of situational awareness

I thought self-sack when I saw it live, but the endzone replay showed he tripped.  That said, it's happened a few times this season, so there may be an awareness issue.

Part of the reason he tripped is that his feet are often too far apart

I've not read the entire thread, nor have I gone back to watch the game over. I may be wrong, but I have come to think a few things on this matter:

1. QE, though a man of significant talent, can not be relied upon to take the top off a defense

2. Playoff teams will scheme for this and smother us. The only really good team we've played handled us.

3. All wise-cracks aside, Arch may give us a chance to hit those throws

4. It stinks to bench a starting QB, especially when we sit at 9-1, but it needs to happen because

5. The future is likely to be better the sooner we start working on it in games

Hookem and thanks, Quinn, but I think its time to let the team move on

This is silly. Every legit title contender has a QB that is (a) capable of leading his team all the way and (b) equally capable of shitting the bed and losing a playoff game.

It’s like half the people in this thread never watch any other teams play every week

yeah BUT if he gets out of his funk and plays at a high level, which he has done before, there’s zero debate that he’s better than arch and we’ll probably win the national championship.  given how he’s looked this season I think that pretty unlikely though.

This is the problem. It’s a bigger problem than his inaccuracy with deep balls. There are plays where he drops back and could easily pick up 3-5 yards but stands still in the pocket too long. He just lacks that sense of how to move, when to run, etc. It’s the difference between maintaining drives and not, and over time, being a good or great offense.

The opportunity to move on from Quinn was when Sark finally had enough of him and benched him against Georgia. With how our defense played that game, had Quinn even had a pulse, we win. Sure, there will be a few bumps with Arch but him getting the first team reps in practice and taking over full time, the upside is bigger with him than Quinn.

But Sark went back to Quinn and I have no idea why.

Yup. Allowing him to come back for the second half was the nail in the coffin on the potential to bench him permanently.

Draft stock seems pretty low. I guess he’s inconsistent? But he’s mobile and has a pretty good arm. Definitely put up some numbers this year.
