If QE can get things going early, he finds him stride and he's usually good to go.  It's the slow starts that are problematic.

Honestly, he can look good with Sark’s script then completely fall apart once the defense adjusts

I want to be clear that I think Sark deserves a lot of criticism for this situation. He's been babying Quinn in front of reporters since he returned, how proud he is of how QE handles certain situations, etc. Maybe there's some tough love behind closed doors, but it doesn't look like it. Quinn is currently in a very fragile mental and physical state, and Sark's bending over backwards to protect him at all costs. Our offensive strategy at QB looks like what you do with a 3rd or 4th string walk-on with no backup options . Short passes, don't turn the ball over, rarely take shots, eat the ball instead of trying to make a play.  It's unsustainable to keep doing this shit.

I don't think Quinn can do off-schedule if he didn't run the predetermined route Quinn would fuck up the throw or just not know where to look.

IMO we are seeing Quinns glass completely full from a mental standpoint, whether that's stress, playbook, whatever he's maxed out mentally before he's maxed out his physical attributes.

This is where I am. The play has to go just like it did in practice for Quinn. No adjustments, no looking to a second or third receiver. It's like sark has to script for a robot.

Any GM taking Ewers before the 3rd round is making a monumental mistake based on this year's film. I watched the SNF game last night with Burrow and Herbert. They were making throws that Ewers couldn't dream of making at this point.

Talk to a 'bama fan, they'll tell you we kicked their ass.  (And then they'll say we didn't get late-season Milroe.)

Fans tend to focus on offense, and the 'bama game was just more dynamic (454/362 total yards versus 315/231 against Arkansas).  Furthermore, 'bama was a 7 point favorite whereas we were a 14 point favorite over Arkansas.  Both games ended with no attempt at a FG to make it a 13 point differential, which would have just about nailed the Vegas line on Saturday.

Texas fans really need to embrace the fact that this is an elite defensive team with a "good" offense, and wins are often going to look ugly.

Going into Tuscaloosa and beating the Tide by 10 points is much, much more impressive than beating Arkansas by that in Fayetteville. Add in Arkansas' 124th-rated pass defense and it's even more befuddling. Losing Baxter was a huge, huge blow. That Texas is 9-1 and in the thick of the SEC title chase is pretty incredible. We've been better than expected in just about every area save one. I'll let you take a guess what I think that is. (Oh, our kickers could be better too.)

Maybe he's figured out we're a Defense first team. Don't turn the ball over and we're not losing.

We didn't turn the ball over against Arkansas, and we were nursing a 13-7 lead in the fourth quarter.

Holy hell we scored 20 points with zero turnovers, and with being given two from the defense. Against a defense that isn't great.

I understand many of us have bad takes here and we should always "trust the corches" until they get fired (sometimes for their stubbornness). My personal hot take on Sark's decision making with regards to the two QBs is that he doesn't want to tank Quinn's career by benching him.

Quinn was the #1 QB in his recruiting class and flashed his talent several times over his career, so letting Quinn fail is not only bad for Quinn's career but also a big ding on Sark's resume. If Arch excelled in the two drives against UGA, Sark probably bites the bullet and goes with Arch for the rest of the season. But since Arch couldn't capitalize on his limited opportunity, Sark is going to ride with Quinn. Arch is not clearly better than Quinn at this juncture of his career, so the decisionto stick with Quinn is defensible and less controversial. He probably wants Quinn to succeed more badly than Thatguy.

We controlled the ball against Arkansas for the last 7 minutes and won by 10 points too. By your logic we whooped their asses too since we did the same to Alabama.

I like how in a previous post about the Bama game you mentioned Ewers was lucky that his mistake fumbling the snap on the fourth down conversion didn’t cost them more. But you also failed to mention that 4 plays later we turned it over on downs and Bama scores to take the lead and huge momentum shift happens. Wonder what happened after that?

After the QB play we had between Colt and Quinn I sometimes don't understanding why it is so upsetting to see Quinn play poorly since we saw for so long. Do I ever feel that Quinn can't get the ball there, not really. When he throws it deep am I ever wondering if it is going to be intercepted like with others? No, I just feel no one will get to it. I figured it out while re-watching the Arkansas game. When Quinn is on he is so damn good that anything less is incomprehensible and makes me upset.

I'm pretty sure at this point that we would be scoring more points with Arch. But there would also probably be more three and outs, and probably more turnovers.

I just dont understand this logic. Do we say that about other positions? Texas isnt the same program, so the standards have changed. I think that is a good thing. The crazy thing about Texas fans is a see a lot of people say the support Quinn and should be the QB the rest of the year, but he better get out after this year. It is some pretty twisted logic. Imagine saying that about Bijan, Brooks, Banks, etc

Another thought I had was that Sark was generally considered to be a nice guy. He is the kind of a coach who won't run up the score for style points, is very appreciative of people who helped him, doesn't fire coaches, etc. I just don't see him abandoning the QB who was instrumental in turning this program around. It is what it is at this point. I just hope Quinn balls out the rest of the season because he is not going anywhere.

This offense with a 3rd year QB and multiple NFL OL and WRs has become predictable and easy to stop. Instead of opening things up and spreading the ball over the field, it's been reduced to grinding out first downs with dinks and dunks that require YAC.

It's incredibly frustrating. This sputtering offense is on clear display against any above average defense. Even if we somehow make it to the playoffs, this level of offensive play will get us destroyed again.

My point was the irony in Quinn messing up the QB sneak so badly that it turned out to be a good thing because it gave us the possibility of advancing the ball.

Brooks converting helped us avoid a major Quinn fuckup that usually causes mental miscues and brings out bad Quinn. So what if we turned the ball over on downs 4 plays later after going 8 yards? We still avoided a major fuckup that causes bad Quinn to come out and he finished the game like the good Quinn we saw at the end.

The frustrating part is Texas has a championship caliber defense this year. NFL WRs, TE, and OL. I am not sure Texas will have the same quality parts next year.

Are there things that Quinn does currently during a game that Arch can't? I haven't seen something yet that I would say "yep, Arch wouldn't be able to do that".

Are there things that Arch can do currently during a game that Quinn can't? I think we have seen enough scrambles and deep balls to know that Arch is much better in just those two categories.

To me, you put the best talent on the field at every position so I keep asking "Are the coaches seeing something in practices that we aren't and that is telling them they have a better chance at winning with Quinn?"

As you referenced above, I'm sure there is a lot of Sark thinking that if he goes with Arch and fails, it will be thrown in his face that he should have just stuck with Quinn. So this may be the path of least resistance and he knows he will still have Arch and good talent next year.

IMO, 3rd round to a competent organization might not be that bad, all in all.  The Simms interview from earlier highlighted it: he's a first-read guy and holds the ball too long.  I do not know if that was always the case, though.

In the year he was recruited, QB rankings (draft year and slot in parens - or present status):

  1. Ewers (Texas by way of tosu)
  2. Caleb Williams (2024 1.1)
  3. Sam Huard (Utah, by way of Washington and Cal Poly)
  4. Drake Maye (2024 1.3)
  5. Brock Vandagriff (Kentucky QB by way of Georgia)
  6. JJ McCarthy (2024 1.10)

Burrow and Herbert are exceptional, no doubt.  Perhaps they are not a fair comparison, as I see them in the top-quartile of NFL QBs.  Then again, the #1 QB recruit *should* project to a first or second round draft pick.

That 202 draft was loaded: Burrow (1.1), Tua (1.5), Herbert (1.6), Jordan Love (1.26), Hurts (2.21).

Which is the maddening part...

His best rifled throws are straight down the middle, typically to the TE but not always. We've seen it with JT and Gunner. Moore's dropped TD pass as well. I think it's because that throw is practiced with proper mechanics and really the only way to do it, but he tends to float them more when more towards the sidelines.

I get what you’re saying but there is more evidence showing that Ewers plays better after fucking up than the other way around. It’s a point that doesn’t carry weight so why bring up a hypothetical situation in which you do not know the outcome? Bama could have recovered and scored, and then we go down and get the lead right back. Then what? You’re so hung up on what could’ve went wrong that game without realizing everything that he did in the Bama game is exactly why everyone is so pissed right now. We get that version of Ewers this year, we’re basically unstoppable on offense.

Arch has been pretty bad at throwing the short game. The throws haven't been placed well, making it difficult for receivers/backs to catch the ball in stride and get up field. He also hasn't shown much ability to run RPOs that we often thrive on. Those are things I think he can learn, but he hasn't demonstrated an ability to execute them at this stage in his development. Quinn's short game is elite and better than pretty much any QB I can think of. He makes it really easy for the receiver to catch and go with momentum.

I would agree with those that feel he floats the ball far too much.  His deep balls are mostly arm and him guessing at how much to put on it.  It basically becomes a touch pass and that makes it so much harder to complete.  When he throws the ball with velocity he is fucking money.  I don't understand why Sark hasn't corrected that because that is the first thing the NFL will ask of him.

The offense would likely be different. Sark has talked about how Tau and Mac Jones had different offenses. Tau was predominantly RPO and Mac was predominantly play action. I do agree Arch is not as good on the short timing routes as Quinn. Quinn is typically elite in that area. Quinn struggles when teams take away the flats from him. The issue for Quinn is the consistency. This was the year we all assumed Quinn would play at a consistent level. Michigan sucked us in. He is still the same the QB. He struggles with deep balls, he is slow through his progressions, poor footwork, and bad pocket feel. I fell in love with the promise of Quinn's talent, but now the tape is starting to win me over. This just seems to be who Quinn is. Arch may be similar. We do not know for sure how he would progress in a game or over the several games. I would assume he improves. Texas fans are always hard on QBs. Freshmen Colt and Vince got a lot of heat from fans. I remember defending freshman Sam and Quinn. All of them improved, but only Quinn has needed to be defended as a 3rd year starter.

Maybe it's like where you practice a three pointer fade away and falling away so much that it's the only way you know how to shoot anymore. You fall away even when the pressure isn't in your face.

I don't understand how I watch every other college and pro QB throw generally the same whether they are going to get hit or not, stepping into the throw. Then QE throws the same either way as well, falling away backwards even if there's nobody around him.

I think Arch's issues would very quickly work themselves out once you committed to him full-time. There would likely be more mistakes than Ewers makes and that's understandable considering QE has 30 career starts to Arch's two.

He is not a single read QB. He doesn’t always make the right decision but he has a much better grasp of elite defenses than arch does and in fact does go through his progressions.

his limitations are mobility, pocket presence, and the deep ball. But touch, intermediate accuracy and reading defenses he’s way ahead of arch.

I agree with this statement. I know people refuse to believe this, but the reality is is each game he’s making at least one pass where I’m surprised he was able to go through his progressions to the 3rd option and fire a strike. Maybe it’s because I’ve come to expect less and less of him since the OU game, but I I’m happy to be pleasantly surprised. It’s not just dump offs either. I’d have to go back and rewatch the Arky game, but I remember one where he connected on a first down over the middle and it was his 3rd option. Palmer, as bad as he was on color Saturday, even called it out as a great play by Quinn, and it was.

We should at least attempt to be accurate in our critiques of Quinn. He’s struggled/struggling with deep ball accuracy, pocket presence/self sacking, and he’s not running and taking off for the free yards that are being given as frequently as he could. If he had a bit more fiery leadership, it may be easier to forgive his short comings. Put me in the camp of having Ewers be more aggressive running the ball when it’s there for Aggy and beyond.

Quinn has plus, if not great accuracy and touch in the short to intermediate game. Quinn leads receivers in motion to give them their best chance at YAC. Quinn throws an incredibly catchable ball, Wingo and Moore drops recently be damned. Watching other games in the SEC recently, it became even more apparent how catchable his balls are than say Nussmeier or Sellers.

I say all this to say, we could be a lot worse off than Quinn Ewers at starting QB. Quinn has looked terrific at times in his tenure and also ass my dude at times. I also am undecided as to whether this team looks better on offense if Arch were to have started the entire year. We saw Arch start against arguably our 2 easiest opponents all year, and in one game he looked phenomenal, and in another he looked like a freshman QB. The definition of inconsistent. His ceiling is undoubtedly high.

If Sark truly believes QE gives us our best chance to win a title this year, I’m willing to believe in Sark. He has brought us back from absolute irrelevance to 2 straight years of going to or being on track to make the CFP. Sark and the core of this team, inclusive of QE, are the very reason why our expectations have become sky high and why there’s so much hand wringing over the guy under center who should lead us to the promised land.

This same thought occurred to me as a possibility earlier when Quinn proponents state that if Arch were the better choice, he'd have already made the switch. Quinn is the safer choice even if it doesn't pan out. Of course, none of us truly know Sark's mind on the matter, but I have no doubt that he will make the switch if push comes to shove, just as he did for that brief period against Georgia. There was nothing to lose and no one except a fool would criticize him in that case.

Quinn to me is like a Ferrari that is complicated and delicate to tune. Some loose wire or spring-loaded screw isn't just where it needs to be. It sputters along, occasionally catches throttle and takes off for a bit. But oh boy, if you can get it in the sweet spot, watch that baby go!

Here's to hoping Quinn gets his mojo back and settles into his groove. Because if he does, our offense really is unstoppable.

If we win the CFP I will come back and eat all the crow in the world and will be the happiest poster on this site because it will mean QE is headed to the NFL.

Winning the SEC and QE going to the NFL are the two things I care about this season since we goat fucked all the opportunities to bring Arch in productively against top flight defenses because Sark is so sensitive about the QB controversy.  Whatever we get in the CFP past the first round will be house money IMHO.

100% and I was also repeating what Rod Babers said. It's highly underrated but I think even sark will tell you, his offense starts with straight ahead run game. we ain't got that this year. I think sark has had limited success passing to set up the run, I think he's dominate when he can run to set up the pass. This year he's having to get really creative with screens, more misdirection than normal and the flare passes to create a reasonable facsimile to a run game. not sure it's working as well as just lining up and running right at the defense successfully though. I think this causes tremendous stress on the offensive system and his play calling. proably another reason why he's hesitant to put the bet on a RS freshman QB, for better or for worse.

While QE was a No.1 out of high school when he got to tOSU he was on the bench behind the Texans current QB. Maybe Meyer saw what we are seeing now. Sark is getting close to or maybe has passed his Riley/Rottler/Williams moment. Hellacious position to be in but considering what Sark is paid and where he coaches he better have the  huevos to pull the trigger.

Sounds like our strategy against #13, I mean #8 Georgia. How'd that work out? You're gonna have turnovers... at least you can't plan on them not happening. You need to score early and often. You need a QB who can run the ball in today's game.
