Mo Blackwell, for all of his athleticism and toughness, hasn't ever been the most heads-up player. He should have been hyper focused on the punter's foot at that point.

Hell, he was there so early if he’d have tried I think he could have tackled him before he got the punt off.

You think DJ Cambell not being able to move a 240 lb prince Dorbah off his spot has anything to do with game plan? These are the things I saw in the game. He has that dude by a hundred pounds and got completely stonewalled in OT. That should have been a 6-7 yard gain at minimum that we lost yards on eventually leading to 4th and 13. I agree, Quinn is better when we spread people out and let Quinn sling it. He is comfortable doing that. It wasn't ASUs game plan that stoned our run game as much as just getting whipped at the point of attack. That is the embarrassing part. Sark waited until the last moment to just abandon the run. It worked. Exhilarating game that resembled a roller coaster.

I think its funny that people who have come in here to ridicule Quinn Ewers are now calling for the offense to move to a spread offense throwing the ball all over the yard. Sounds like the complaining should have been focused on something other than Quinn to begin with.

It is absolutely scheme here. Our run scheme is heavily dependent on our line getting to their spots before the defense. If the defense gets there first, it blows up all the timing. We should be able to adjust to that and punish it. But for whatever reason we cannot.

Disagree to some degree, a 330# Offensive linemen should be able to displace a 240# defensive end to make a hole for the RB. That was the design of that particular play. I keep hearing how tough DJ is. He should be able to lean on that guy and move him.

Maybe 74 was supposed to double team him before moving on so that Cambell could seal to the inside but it doesn't appear that way. Even the announcers were talking about how this played out.  Our offensive line couldn't even hold the point of attack, they were getting pushed around by much smaller guys.

Can someone give me a good reason for Helm not being involved until late in the game? I have a hard time believing Sark can't scheme plays for him.  Felt like this happened in 2nd UGA game as well.

He used him as a blocker against UGA2. Strange, I know, certainly isn't his strength.

You have to start from the beginning to get an idea of what happened. Dorbah is an Edge. I am guessing he shot the gap on a stunt and beat Campbell to the spot (purely a guess). Possible Goosby whiffed on him, instead of getting an arm on him to help Campbell. Campbell is beat by speed as his shoulders are parallel to the sideline. All he can do is push him laterally, he can not stop him from getting up field. This is about leverage and positioning, not strength and toughness

Yep.

The guys are perpendicular to each other. This is a speed/positioning issue, not straight up getting pushed around. You can outweigh me by 100lbs but it doesn't matter much if our paths are damn near 90 degrees apart and I'm getting through the intersection ahead of you.

I took the screenshots from the video, he didn't shoot a gap, he was for some reason completely unable to move him. If the video was on YouTube I could make a clip of it. I have no idea how to make o clip from where this video originated. If you watch the video this has nothing to do with speed. Dorbah just puts his right shoulder into Campbell and stoned him on the spot.

It wasn't speed, I will try to find and make a clip. He put his shoulder into Campbell, stopped him and moved upfield. He set the edge like a strong side DE should. Problem is he shouldn't be physically capable of doing that against Campbell. Below is a screenshot earlier in the play for reference. 74 did get his hands on him and he wasn't shooting a gap or perpendicular to Campbell, he just beat him.

So Dorbah did shoot the gap and went under Goosby.

not everything has to be complicated. the reason the game was close was because we couldnt run the fucking ball.  theres nothing else that needs to be added.

Football is complicated. There is so much nuance to the game, that's what makes it the best sport in the world. If you don't want to participate in detailed discussions, that's your prerogative. But please don't talk down to people because you're not willing to go deeper.

We didn't really run the ball well vs. Michigan. Take out Wingo's 55 yard end around, and our leading rusher was 36 yards from Gibson on 10 carries.  Running was effective enough, but what made our offense click was Quinn's efficiency and getting RZ TDs.

I understand people don't want to believe someone with Campbells talent and size can let a play like this happen but it did and it is embarrassing.

I know the play you’re talking about. Dorbah shot the gap from depth and drove his inside shoulder into Campbell. Goosby could have helped him with a quick shove back inside, but he’s inexperienced and just trying to figure out wtf is going on.
Dorbah’s momentum and impact were likely greater than Campbell’s at that point, so he lost the edge. It’s not just as simple as being athletic and heavy.

JFC dude, he didn't shoot the fucking gap. Can you read, do your eyes work? Campbell should wash him out of the fucking play. The play is designed to go right up Jake Majors ass. It didn't work because Conner got pushed into the play and Campbell couldn't move a 240#  weak side DE off his spot.  Our offensive line was ass in the run game, stats prove that, not sure how what I am posting is being contested. Go watch the clip yourself. A shitty DE who couldn't get on the field for us just abused our former 5 star right Guard.

Exactly. ASU had us scouted like Georgia did. They were able to defeat our blocking schemes because of how well they were prepared to do it. Sark & Co. need to figure out a counter to this.

I think Goosby is supposed to double momentarily to help DJ secure his block and climb to the second level looking for work. What @Longhornlove is saying is Goosby doesn't do his job, but even still Campbell should be able to kick the block out and allow Wisner to hit the playside A-gap. Campbell struggles to move Dorbah at all with almost a 100lb advantage on him. If y'all are watching the running game there are three main culprits to our running game struggles as far as the line goes. Majors can't move people. Conner LOSES strength battles. Campbell lacks effort. That's why we can't run IZ or gap schemes vs most folks. Our skill position players aren't good blockers either. Last year's bunch were much better and therefore we were much more flexible. Longhornlove if you know the timestamp on this screen shot I can pull the clip for you later.

I was probably one of the loudest this weekend saying air it out. I’m not in the “it’s all QE’s fault” camp.  He has his deficiencies and has been a disappointment in terms of improvement soph to junior years but I think he’s more than capable of winning the whole thing. My biggest problems are play design and play calling. After that it’s execution and QE is a major part of that but so is shitty WR blocking at times and lazy routes, backs not picking up the blitz, self sacking, tipped balls, poor footwork, penalties and more. But QE is more than good enough to hoist the NC trophy.

It's both. Conner loses man battles consistently. Doesn't really matter who we play. If that dude is tasked with a 1v1 he will lose. Prince fires through the playside B-gap, but Campbell has the strength to wash him down and open up a huge hole in the A. We've seen him do this before but sometimes he is fucking around and not playing with full effort. This is one of those times. He is the old "Alfred Collins" of the O-line.

The move Golden put on the secondary to create space on the 4th and 13 throw cannot be commended enough. Most of the receivers we have run lazy routes. Bond is one of those. We've had a couple interceptions where if you had switched him with Golden they wouldn't have happened. Bond also doesn't block either. Bond is the kind of player that would post in this thread. Lol

Early season Bond ran great routes. I don't think he is lazy. I think he can't cut due to injury.

The play is fucked, because the OL failed to handle the movement. Dorbah slants and shoots the gap. He beats Campbell to the spot. Campbell feet are behind him. He ends up knocking him down and moving him out, but he cannot stop the penetration. This screwed for 2 reasons. Goosby doesnt even put a hand on Dorbah and Campbell makes a bad first step (he stepping straight forward on a 45 degree angle). The DTs are running a stunt. Conner has a good step and walls off the slanting DT. He cant stop the penetration. That also knocks Banks off. He has no chance to get the looping DT, who makes the tackle. Majors whiffs on the ILB, he is there to make tackle if the DT does not. This is great example of how the OL was not prepared to handle movement up front from the ASU dline. This is was a technique and communication issue.

Conner fucking sucks, we all know it but coaches value his pass pro.

He's played two really good games this year and that's it, Michigan and A&M. We'll need him to step up these next two games.

That was a complete abortion of a game from them on the running side. At least they pulled their heads out of their asses long enough for Quinn to save the season.

Guys are hash. If was a poor game. From what I saw I put more of that in the feet of Sark and Flood for not having them prepared, but the OL has been nails in pass pro. Big reason for Quinn's success the last 2 games is he has had excellent protection.

Pass pro he's been solid. I have a theory about our line and that they are relatively good against size just not quickness. Our d line was the same.

The normal poster reading our OL was asstastic & had an embarrassing game would naturally assume the blame can and should be shared with the coaches in their charge. That doesn't negate the fact that the players also got their asses whipped up and down the field in the run game. Hopefully they were just overlooking ASU and now that every has been saying how bad they suck they'll come out and have their best game of the season against OSU.

Its a bit of an odd match. "Big Humans, Big Humans!!" lets makes OZ the core concept. So the OL is big, but wants to block horizontally. That has oddly been the staple, because of the interior OL (mostly Conner and Majors). The OTs can straight up mash people downhill.

that seems to be the way of the 2024 Texas offense. When you give up on something, it comes back and makes you look stupid. When you believe, they come out and kick you in the nuts. Though I doubt that happens vs OSU. This is probably the best defense Texas has played. Their edges are very good.

Add Michigan to that list.  Wingo's 55 yard end around inflated the stats. The running game was effective enough, but we didn't run it particularly well.

I didn't see people shooting a bunch of gaps, I saw a lot of slants. I haven't seen any analysis online showing how that was the Strat. If you have people shooting gaps, there is usually a risk, reward because it can cause gaping holes. That sure as hell wasn't the case. they strung everything out, filled gaps, tackled well and won a ton of 1v1 assignments.

slants/shooting, whatever term you feel like using but they were beating the fuck outta our guys to positions and blowing our OZ up. ASU and Georgia both took the risk because the reward pays off. If we break off the big runs etc then they have to switch it up. We never punished them for it so it is what it is....

not to mention Texas ran it with Bijan and that really fit him. You never knew where he would end up. Playside D gap or backside A gap. It will be interesting to see if Texas reverts to the IZ next year.
