Yeah I've already read that he learned how to fly one.

That MF probably spent the last 10 years learning how to fly his own private F18 so he could realistically do those scenes like the helicopter scenes in MI5

It's a fucking training F18 and the midget is in the backseat. Not to mention wearing the wrong kind of helmet.

Top Gun was the first movie I saw on a Dolby home theater. Think it was 32" screen and we thought it was badass.

Gotta say, Danger Zone on Harman Karden speakers in Dolby was impressive.

Same. But not specifically Danger Zone but the opening credits. So awesome.

Anybody ever notice that every pilot in the movie got a cool nickname except the one black pilot?  They called him "Sundown."  Sundown, really?  Was "Midnight" too strong, so you had to dial it back a few hours?

Yeah, it's prolly not fair to call them all bad.  For a stretch there, he'd make something original and quirky mixed in box office money makers.  Very strategic about it, actually.

I know people that have worked with him on the back end (no homo) and without exception, everyone says he's excellent to work with.  Smart, disciplined, professional, gets along great with everyone and a legitimate good guy.  That's what makes the space people religion so odd.

Without question.  I used to listen to Jay Mohr's podcast a lot and he gushes about how great Tom Cruise was during the production of Jerry Maguire.... first one on the set, last to leave, nice to every single person he interacted with, etc.

I actually like the opening more than Danger Zone...but it's splitting hairs.

based on the Nintendo Top Gun game, I'm surprised Maverick could survive a carrier landing enough times to live 34 years

Was not racist.  One of the F-14 squadrons that helped film Top Gun was the Sundowners.  Some of the other callsigns references other squadrons.

  • In 1985, VF-111 was one of several NAS Miramar based squadrons to participate in the filming of the film Top Gun. Some VF-111 and VF-51 aircraft were repainted in fictitious squadron markings for the film. To be able to film the sequences, the F-14s were fitted with cameras mounted in pods attached to the underbelly Phoenix pallets and the under wing pylons, as well as using ground mounted cameras. Also, one of the fictional RIOs in the film, played by Clarence Gilyard, uses the callsign "Sundown" and wears a VF-111 styled helmet and squadron patch on his flight suit.

Yeah, I know the story of the training squadrons.  What I don't get is why they out of a dozen pilots, the black pilot conveniently gets that name?

Always thought the same thing. I’d love to have seen all the actors getting and reading their character titles on there scripts, and Sundown going, “Really fucking funny Tony Scott”!!

Dude got redemption though. He went on to play Chuck Norris’ partner on Walker Texas Ranger. That’s gotta count for something.

Have any of those actors been on the top of their game for over 40 years? Because that is what Cruise is doing. Hes also the highest grossing actor of all time (estimated around half a billion dollars at this point) and is the definitive movie star of the past 30 or so years

Dude is one of the top 3 or 4 movie stars, ever. Mo’Nique has an oscar... Cruise does not

half a billion is like a weekend's work for chris pratt

AF has it at Henderson outside LV; USN has it at Fallon outside Reno.

I imagine they are in San Diego again.  Watching Mav and Iceman pick-up middle aged divorcees in a shady Reno casino bar probably has less appeal than doing it in San Diego.

Yeah, they closed the seedy underbelly of Reno.  Now it's a swallows.

Still the best opening scene ever!    I think that alone recruited some people to join the navy back in the day.   And it was goose bump inducing to sit in the theatre in the new  surround sound technology that every theater was bragging about back then and hear it was out of this world.

5.1 didn't come out until '87 so not quite sure what kind of surround sound they were bragging about.  Sounds like some bullshit to increase ticket sales.

Last 30 years is a long time and has alot of actors.  Males alone you got Daniel Day Lewis, Christian Bale, Bill Murray, Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney,  Matt Damon. That doesn't even include Philip Seymour Hoffman
Or Johnny Depp or Joaquin Phoenix.
