Awful news. He was the one celebrity that I would have loved to spend a day eating and drinking with. May he RIP.

I think that makes a very big assumption that people that get to the point where taking their own life makes sense are capable of making rational decisions. That’s a really, really big assumption. Most people (most, not all) who get to that point can’t see any other solution to their issues.

This.  Boggles my mind in 2018 people still don't understand this.

And it’s not a small portion of the population. This doesn’t seem all that surprising now, but it still fucking sucks.

Went to see him & Eric Ripert at Bass Hall right after he quit Travel Channel. He was really excited about going to CNN and having all their contacts to work with. He had a unique talent that will be missed. Cook free or die.

And there is something about mental illness, the illness itself, that tells you that nothing will help and no one can help.  The apparent resistance to seeking or accepting help looks like pride (and at times can actually be pride), but it's more complex than that.  Compounding that, the help can be difficult and unpleasant.

My dad worshiped this guy.  Said he was literally the only person on Earth he was envious of.  RIP

He did have one of the coolest jobs in the world (not that that's any match for mental illness).

19 words to live by -- a. bourdain

1. I don't have to agree with you to like you or respect you.

2. If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.

3. Your body is not a temple, it's an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.

4. Maybe that’s enlightenment enough: to know that there is no final resting place of the mind; no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom...is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.

5. To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living. Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, and affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food.

6. Luck is not a business model.

7. Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? Or do we want to eat without fear, tearing into the local stew, the humble taqueria's mystery meat, the sincerely offered gift of a lightly grilled fish head? I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.

8. Don't lie about it. You made a mistake. Admit it and move on. Just don't do it again. Ever.

9. Skills can be taught. Character you either have or you don't have.

10. They're professionals at this in Russia, so no matter how many Jell-O shots or Jager shooters you might have downed at college mixers, no matter how good a drinker you might think you are, don't forget that the Russians - any Russian - can drink you under the table.

11. Good food is very often, even most often, simple food.

12. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.

13. I am in no way supportive of hunting for trophies or sport - would never do it and don't like it that others do. But if you kill it, then eat it, it's fine.

14. I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books.

15. We know, for instance, that there is a direct, inverse relationship between frequency of family meals and social problems. Bluntly stated, members of families who eat together regularly are statistically less likely to stick up liquor stores, blow up meth labs, give birth to crack babies, commit suicide, or make donkey porn. If Little Timmy had just had more meatloaf, he might not have grown up to fill chest freezers with Cub Scout parts.

16. There’s something wonderful about drinking in the afternoon. A not-too-cold pint, absolutely alone at the bar.

17. Under 'Reasons for Leaving Last Job', never give the real reason, unless it's money or ambition.

18. Without new ideas success can become stale

19. Don't touch my dick, don't touch my knife.

I saw them a few years ago at the Paramount.  It was really good.  Glad I got to go now.

There aren't a lot of things I watch on tv.  But Bourdain's show was one of them.  It was never trite.  It didn't try too hard.  It just gave a touch of honesty and insight sprinkled in with your food porn.  Which is probably a reflection of its creator.

I'm really upset by this one.  I don't really know why--he was a celebrity whom I never met.  But he made his show and wrote his books in a way that left me thinking that I did know him, and that he was a friend.

Hanged himself.  Wow.  I'm speechless. Damn.

it's incredible. He was such an entertaining knowledgeable person. The only CNN show i watched regularly.  Didn't seem unhappy in the demeanor, i didn't see anything sad about him. Damn terrible news, one of the best guys in celebrity. This is a very big loss.  Stunned.

I envied his gastronomical sense of adventure. How nice it would be to live a life without food hangups, to be able and willing to eat anything. He could eat eyeballs and tongues and testicles. I can't even eat raw tomatoes.

RIP

other than that fixer who faked that terrible fishing/diving scene in eastern europe (?)*, there was never anyone he couldn't get along with after he'd met them.

An absolute crusher. I am really bummed to hear this news. He might have been an asshole, but the guy was a legit good guy.

Such a shit take. I can't say any better than the others, but just know that mental illness breaks your brain. It makes death look like a rational resolution to problems.

Sandra Lee had a very poignant tweet.

I used to think suicide was a cowardly act until it hit really close to home.  Now, i just can’t fathom what a person goes through to ultimately come to that conclusion.

He also called her show a "war crime on television.

Loved his shows. RIP.

he toned down his attacks latter in life.  i think he realized that on his way up he could attain his goals without having to shit on others.  he wasn't perfect, but he was wise enough to learn.

this represents a fundamental misunderstanding of what people who are suicidal are going through. i hope you take some time to ruminate on the topic, learn a little bit more about it, and come back to the thread with a more enlightened take.

Bingo.

We should all grow and learn.  Even as we wrestle with our demons.  And we've all got em.

Never met him and didn't even regularly watch his show, but this really hurts.  I'm a big believer in the feeling of community around shared food and wine and he seemed to embody that philosophy.  RIP
