Guess an Uncle Tupelo reunion ain't never gonna happen.

I think a lot of hard-core Wilco fans do not like Kidsmoke for whatever reason. I can't call it commercial because the damn thing is like 10 mins long. Seems like if somebody knows one Wilco song, that's the one they know.

Pretty sure I've mentioned it here before but I was late to the Wilco party. Some of my ex-wife's friends, who I'm still really close with, were hard-core Wilco fans and I went to at least two or three shows in the early/mid 2000's and didn't really know a single song. I just wasn't a fan. A buddy from work burned every Son Volt/Wilco/Uncle Tupelo album he had and I put them in iTunes library and just never really listened to them. For whatever reason, I started listening to them right about the time I was going through my divorce in 2012 and things just clicked for me with them. I'm not sure there's a better back-to-back than "How to Fight Loneliness" and "Via Chicago" on any album that I own. Wilco is a top five band (at least) for me now. I've seen Wilco 6-7 times probably now (maybe more), Jeff Tweedy solo three or four times and Tweedy at least once. I bet the only musician(s) I've seen more are the Old 97's/Ranchero Brothers/Rhett Miller, who I've probably seen 30+ times altogether.

Really excited for the show tonight.

That’s an interesting perspective on Kidsmoke. That wouldn’t be my impression at all… like you said it’s like a 10–minute long krautrock freak out…. I figured it’s the kind of song that ONLY hard-core fans love. Even on AGIB (which is one of their least “accessible” albums for non-fans, IMO) there’s way more “mainstream” sounding songs to my ears, like Hummingbird or The Late Greats or Theologians.

And yeah I’m with you in terms of top bands… they’re in my top 3 as well.  I couldn’t put a number on how many times I’ve seen them… definitely 10+ times, plus I’ve seen Tweedy solo another 3-4 times.

But yeah Old 97’s/Rhett are definitely my “most seen live” act as well. God knows how many times I’ve seen them in the past 30 years… a lot. Basically every time they’ve been in Tulsa, plus shows in Dallas, Austin, KC, Red Rocks, and so on.

Enjoy the show! And yeah definitely be sure and give “Cousin” and “Evicted” a listen because I’m sure they’ll play those. Both good tracks.

I've listened to Cousin and just gave Evicted a run. I think I like Evicted better. I didn't realize the new album isn't being released until tomorrow, which is a bit odd that they'd start the tour before the album comes out! We saw Bahamas last Sunday and I think that was the second date on his latest album tour too.

I think that’s a thing now. I saw Isbell in May and his new album dropped in June. I’m seeing Stapleton in Oct, and his new album drops in Nov.

BTW, I think we got at least one more, if not more, new songs than Tulsa. The first two they played tonight were new songs. One I hadn't heard before and it was really good. My only quibble is that we didn't get Via Chicago. Even the song off the country album played more like a Dead & Co song than country. It was quite enjoyable.

Great fucking show as always. Been way too long since I'd seen Wilco proper and not some amalgamation of Tweedy solo projects, etc. Even there set in Charleston last April was lame compared to this. Fucking love these guys. Is it wrong that I'd rather meet and hang with Nels than Jeff?

Super last minute but I’m giving away my 2 tix that I bought a million years ago to Youth Lagoon at Antones tonight forgetting that my wife would be out of town this weekend and now I gotta be on full dad duty 😭

should be an amazing show for all you anti-Wilco dads out there. Was really looking forward to it, his new album kicks ass.

anyway, LMK and I’ll transfer em to you FREE FREE FREE

Looks like an awesome show. And yeah Nels on Impossible Germany is hard to beat. At the Tulsa show the other night, it wasn't on the set list originally and they added it, which was awesome. I've never really got why bands do that but was so glad they did. It's like they just chatted for a sec and then Tweedy goes, "we weren't originally going to play this tonight but now we are..." :D

In terms of meeting the guys, my CSB is about 5 years ago Wilco played at the Brady Theater in Tulsa - I think it's literally the only time they played here that wasn't at Cain's.... anyway there's this craft cocktail bar right down the street from it called Valkyrie. Me and a buddy of mine were having a drink there after the show and Pat Sansone just walks in and sits down at the bar.  And clearly nobody else in that bar had any idea who he was so I walked up and just started chatting him up for a few minutes. The dude could have have been any nicer or cooler.

Went to Depeche Mode with wife (no pics) who partied with the band in the late ‘90s and has seen like 30 shows.

They have never been my favoritr but they held up pretty well.  Gahan must have a hell of a yoga program. Dude is 62 and almost died a couple of times and is still a fucking contortionist.

Star of the show was Moody.  That was my first concert there.  We have something special in Austin.

I'm pretty sure that, at least for a while, that yoga program was called "heroin".

Yeah, from about 1989-1996, he was a heroin users, a cocaine user, and would use whatever else he could find.  Gahan died for 2 minutes in 1996.

I was a big DM fan in HS, through "Some Great Reward."  They could really play; outstanding for the genre.

Same with Duran Duran and INXS.  For each of them, I really preferred their earlier work over their later work.  IMO, "Don't Change" is INXS's best song.  That said, some of Duran Duran's top 10 songs were from their 2nd eponymous release in 1993 (Ordinary World and Come Undone).

None of those bands had what I would consider a superstar talent at any of their instruments (well, DM made some VERY original electronic sounds and some of the early remixes were fantastic).  For example, Steve Smith (Journey), Stewart Copeland (Police) are.  EVH was.  etc.  They had above average musicians, above average songwriting, and very strong frontmen.

Yeah the wife hung with them ‘98-‘01 and said Gahan was a bit of an asshole and recluse, but everyone respected it because it’s what he needed to stay clean.  She also said Andy Fletcher was awesome as a person, but the roadie’s joke was that his keyboard was turned off in concerts because he wasn’t a great musician.

Gahan and Gore have been through a lot. Pretty clear last night that those dudes love each other.  This concert was so much better than the crap at 2013 ACL.

Death Cab/Postal Service last night absolutely rocked.

Yes that show was awesome.  I know it’s pretty much straight up Transatlanticism/Give Up so you knew what was coming…but some of those extended jams had me absolutely lost in the music.  Had to remind myself that Chris Walla left almost a decade ago.

I hadn’t been to the track for a show since Dave Chapelle came back as part of that comedy tour thing…so ages ago.  Hated that venue then and I hate it now…

- Even arriving at 830 the traffic to get in was a cluster fuck   And unless you spring for VIP parking it’s a haul + very little in the way of lighting or other means to remember where your car is

- GA lawn showed seats available this week but I don’t know how you’d cram more folks in there…we had to hug the fence stage-right which meant a contestant parade of apparent ham planets squeezing past

- Price of drinks are absolutely insane.   Obviously part of a bigger trend but holy shit, glad I had brought gummies

- We were in lot F, and when you get to the end of your row there was a sea of cones supposedly to direct traffic in orderly lanes but really it was a confusing mess…so many people made a single file line when there were actually two lanes to get out but the poor cone placement obfuscated it all

I can’t imagine what race day is like out there.  Serving such a huge, global venue with a pair of two lane country roads is awful.  Parking is often the most stressful thing about seeing shows anymore and if I never go out there again, I’m fine with it.

QOTSA and Viagra Boys in Denver last Friday was fucking awesome. Viagra Boys were the opener, played a short set and it wasn't my favorite setlist but they still killed it. QOTSA are sounding exceptionally good and the new material sounded fantastic live. Turnin' on the Screw and God is in the Radio ripped hard. Didn't close with Song for the Dead, which was a bit of a bummer.

Yes.

I thought he'd been sober since he did rehab after the AGIB sessions...?

Yeah, I thought he was clean now. His issues were with pills, I think.

going to u2 later this year at the sphere so haven't been yet but this video seemed worth posting.  venue looks completely fucking insane.  i'm trying to imagine a world where pink floyd played shine on your crazy diamond with this type of a/v.  or i bet sigur ros could do some incredible shit with this.

bono's voice sounds terrible but my fandom for u2 has always been about the edge so i will see this.

Last night was Queens of the Stone Age and Viagra Boys. Excellent show!
I wish the set for Viagra Boys was longer but otherwise fun show.e5a63a37edccc4fb294adb77e11885af.jpgc4491f207275feb06cb62bb21e6e981e.jpg9844cfa3db9f0f70cb1461ddb1a16d0a.jpgd9ee641f3c455548fa12b3fcf328e0c3.jpg

Awesome.

I haven't seen QoTSA since the "Like Clockwork" tour. They kick so much ass. I need to see them again soon. They are playing OKC on this tour but not Tulsa. Boo.

Walkmen tonight at Longhorn Ballroom, Texas/OU tomorrow morning/afternoon at the Cotton Bowl and (god/liver willing) Portugal the Man tomorrow night at Granada. Skipped out on Parker McCollum at our TDC charity event last night but heard it was terrific.

Man, I wish I'd gone to that show. Too many other tickets bought. "Enjoy the Silence" is my all-time favorite DM song. "Violator" is an incredible album.

When I arrived at Baylor, room 125 Penland hall, I was angry and rebellious. My parents had just announced their divorce, and I wasn’t down with being a good boy.

My roommate and I went to Bill’s in Dallas or Plano or somewhere and found posters, and I put this one dead center. I think I had to censor it because nobody made me take it down. He had “She sells sanctuary” by the Cult on his wall.

Good times.

When were you at Baylor? I think you might be a couple years older than me. Two of my best HS friends lived in Penland in 91/92 school year -- yes, I realize just about every male who attended Baylor probably spent a year in Penland. They were both nearly expelled for being caught with alcohol in their room. My best friend's mom had to come up and cut a rather large check I believe in order to keep them both enrolled. My other buddy waged a war against Herb Reynolds (was he the school president) with minor vandalism/mischief of his residence over the ensuing years.

I'm jealous.  I have to go to Vegas for work later this month and I haven't seen U2 live since '87, so I looked at tickets but they are running between $1,000 and $1,500.

I'd love to see a show at the Sphere, but I just can't rationalize spending that much for a concert.

Summer of ‘90-Spring of ‘95. I took a keg into Brooks hall during summer school but was never caught.

I too spent all my time on double secret probation, mainly because of pesky Waco cops and MIPs. I finally had to pick a major and graduate after my ancestors got tired of cutting tuition checks.

Typing all this out and thinking back to all my near disasters - there was clearly something wrong with me. Thank God we have a thread for that!

Back to the topic at hand, Pat Green just headlined our foundation fundraiser benefiting, among others, the sober living facility on whose board of directors I serve.

I’ve seen U2 twice and would spring for tickets at the Sphere in a heartbeat if I didn’t have to fly there for the occasion.

Edit: ok those prices are a little rich for me, too. I’d tap out at $700 or so.
