KRS-ONE tonight in Sacramento. Very interesting show.

He started the things off by throwing albums of his to the audience before the first song

Then , Teacha had a 15 minute “commercial break” about halfway through the concert to philosophize on culture, civilizations, and politics.

Towards the end of the show, he told his crew to “get the tennis balls” and they proceeded to toss about a hundred signed tennis balls into the crowd. While they were doing that, he was signing anything someone handed to him.

saw james mcmurtry solo acoustic on wednesday night at the continental club gallery. obviously he can turn a phrase but his guitar chops are also impressive. mostly played a 12 string but also busted out the 8 string and 6 string for a few songs. man, that 12 string sounded good. played two 45 minutes sets.

I'm getting tickets to see the Eagles at the Sphere.  Price difference between differing sections is wild.  Second section back $300+  Third/fourth section back $800.  Floor  seats $400+  Any reason the second section wouldn't be fine?  TIA

Quick, tell me a last minute show to attend tonight in Austin from around 6:00 to 9:00. Need to be out of the house for a bit.  May just hit Continental Club or Antone's or maybe something random at HITW.

Ended up at Heybale! at Continental Club and the Basil Trio at C-Boys.  Going to The Last Walt II this Friday at the Paramount.

excited about this but also curious...the austin date is the only one that has venue tba. formerly i would have assumed this was levitation but they've moved that festival to sept 25-28 next year. so does this mean there's another festival that will be happening halloween weekend? not sure why else they wouldn't announce the venue...will be interested to see if the austin tickets go on sale this week along with all the others.

Any of you guys hit the Wilco Winterlude shows at Moody over the weekend?

I'm going to both nights at Cain's this week. 60+ songs over two nights and no repeats...

Super pumped for some DEEEEP cuts.

They were top notch - tight, Tweedy's voice great, etc.

Pretty insane set list last night. The band was super tight and sounded great.

Was not disappointed by the assortment of deep cuts:

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/wilco/2024/cains-ballroom-tulsa-ok-b53b932.html

Pretty sure that was the first time I've heard "If I Ever Was a Child" live. It was so good.  They were playing freaking DEEP cuts from the Mermaid Ave. albums... we got 2 deep cuts from Mermaid Ave. Vol 2, lol.

But the highlight for me was "Bird Without a Tail / Base of My Skull."  I hadn't much got into the "Cruel Country" songs but holy hell. That's has to become a new Wilco concert staple. The played it to close the first set and it was just incredible. They extended the jam in the middle of the song to maybe 5-7 minutes and man... it was so great. It's instantly a top 5-10 Wilco song to see live.... up there with like Via Chicago, Shot in the Arm, Spiders (Kidsmoke), etc.

It'll be interesting to see what we get tonight. They didn't play anything off Summerteeth last night so I'm assuming we'll get a good dose of that... also probably a bit more from The Whole Love I imagine... hopefully Art of Almost will be in there.

If anyone is interested in 2 tix to Billy Strings at Moody Center tomorrow - check the  For Sale (best buy coupons) board.

went last night to see him here in Fort Worth.  I had heard of him but wasn't really familiar with his work but I was blown away!  He kept his foot on the gas the entire show.

I was checking the upcoming shows for Gary Clark Jr a few weeks ago.   A few days later, a free show in the domain popped up on one of my feeds.

Weather sucked this evening, but my youngest daughter and I got a seat on the covered patio at the pizza place across the street.

I love that my 20 year old has good taste in music.

Iron Maiden in Santiago, Chile was absolutely insane. 75,000 people who knew every single word to every single song. Wow. Maiden and Chile have something special going on that all started when the Catholic church would let them perform here in '86. That was crazy intense.

Grocery Bag is a damn good band.  Unfortunate name.

Or a great name, depending on your perspective!  Other great current Austin band names...

Large Brush Collection

Subpar Snatch

Chancla Fight Club

I'm a fan of Queen Serene.  Really hoping I can get a pass to sneak over there.

What did you think?

I thought he put on a great show.  I was expeting bluegrass, but I wasn't really expecing psychedelic bluegrass and we got both.  I didn't really know what to expect.  I'd seen a few YouTube vids and some friends I respect had raved about him, but I wasn't so sure about it.  I went on a lark as friend had tickets but couldn't go. I'm really glad I did.

Next time I would show up earlier.  I didn't appreciate that apparently he has a Dead like following.  Rather, a lot of Dead fans follow him.  There were a ton there in typical Dead regalia.  There were also a lot of folks in parking lot selling their wares.  I wasn't able to partake as I couldn't leave work early.  Then there were a bunch of straight up FW rednecks there.  Then there were just the regular work a day folks like me.  All of this is a way to say, the show was as much of a scene as Billy, which seemed really cool to me.  It reminded me of all the stories we've read/heard about Willie's early days when the rednecks and hippies would just hang out and groove on the good music.

It was also my first time at Dickies arena.  I've shied away from arena shows of late.  But I'd have to say as far as arenas go, it was really good.  The sound was on point (at least from about mid floor, where I was).  It's a beautiful, new facility.  LIke a scaled down AAC.

Yea he’s become kind of a thing.

What did you think about his playing?

He's playing was about as good as any blugrass player I've ever seen.  To be able to do that kind of a speed and accuracy for 3 hours straight was impressive.  And it wasn't just "hey watch me play all these hyper technical licks.'  he played it with feeling.  And when he put that through his wild ass pedal array, it was something altogether different.  I don't think I've ever heard an acoutic sound quite like that before.  There was definitley a novelty aspect to it.

Yea, interesting way of looking at it.

I once heard or read someone describe Stevie Ray as an open channel. BS is really the only other player I’ve seen that fits that bill. I really do think he’s that good.

Open channel is spot on.

I did a couple years at UNT before transferring to UT. I had really been wood shedding before I got there with dreams of making it big in Denton! I ate in the cafeteria at Bruce Hall where all the musicians stayed. There would be pick up bands playing in the lobby for fun and I’ve seen people since as good, but no one better. In those days Bruce didn’t have a/c so all the windows would be open and you’d hear this cacophony of musicians practicing - and showing off for each other - as you just walked down the street on the way to Biology class. It was at that point I realized that music would always be an avocation for me, not a vocation. I could practice 20 hours a day for 20 years and never get to where that dorm full of talented as fuck kids were. It was also where I learned I was not so great at math and needed to be in liberal arts. But that’s a story for another day.

In any case, that’s kind of how I felt watching Billy Strings. But I had a lot of fun watching. I’ll definitely see him again.
