excited about this but also curious...the austin date is the only one that has venue tba. formerly i would have assumed this was levitation but they've moved that festival to sept 25-28 next year. so does this mean there's another festival that will be happening halloween weekend? not sure why else they wouldn't announce the venue...will be interested to see if the austin tickets go on sale this week along with all the others.

I fell in love with the beat of "Punk Rock Loser" when I first heard it.  Then found the lyrics hilarious.  Trying to figure out where they would be playing in Austin?  Too big for Antones and Continental I assume?  Hotel Vegas?

Saw Billy Gibbons, Chris Layton, Mike Flanigin, and Jimmie Vaughan at Antone's on Friday.

Arrived early enough to grab one of the stools along the wall.

Gibbons started by saying that he wasn't feeling great, but the show must go on.  Played several ZZ Top songs and Gibbons voice sounded terrible - painful to listen to because you could tell that it hurt him to sing.

It seemed that they improvised some and probably had Flanigan and Vaughan sing a few more.  I would have been fine with just hearing the guitars without singing.

I thought they would cancel last night's show and the Ft. Worth show tonight based upon how bad Gibbons sounded and felt, but they played last night.

Die Spitz also put on a great show considering they had about 50 square feet to work with.

Longcat article on an update on Waterloo Records (new ownership, moving 5 blocks up north Lamar) with a cameo by Die Spitz! at the end

Quote

Magma-Colored

A band just picked up their vinyl.”

These words from Caren Kelleher as Watson and myself emerge from the Gold Rush listening room trigger a hard-stop in this OG vinylist.

“What band!?”

Everyone points at the white band van waiting in the loading dock: “Die Spitz!”

At South by Southwest 2023, the Austinites collapsed Red River microjoy Chess Club with punk dynamite. By Levitation 18 months later at Mohawk, the rising young quartet radiated megaton teen spirit – and zero vinyl at the merch table! Fan worship prevents looking directly at a star, but did bassist Kate Halter really just grant me my final vinyl wish of 2024?

“Magma-colored,” she grins, climbing into the driver’s seat.

Later, double EP long-player Teeth/The Revenge of Evangeline emulsifies my hi-fi.

“I joke, if you wanna have a big record collection, just start a factory,” Kelleher cracks. “It’ll only cost you a couple million dollars.”

Gold Rush Vinyl proves personally memorable, but Trey Watson can’t wait to top that at Waterloo, which plans on reopening in its new location in time for SXSW 2025. He teases the addition of two to three “experiential” rooms inside the store unseen anywhere.

“What you’ll see going on within this store is going to be different than anything Austin’s ever experienced,” Watson says. “John’s said to me on lots of occasions, 'I wanted Waterloo Records to be a cultural music hub where people and community congregate and talk, and enjoy music.’

“He’s done that.

“But it’s still not the place it can be from a congregational perspective. My goal is to continue his message while creating an Austin flagship destination.”

Yeah that whole article was impossible to follow.

You prompted a distant memory . . . "seems like a Raoul Hernandez piece" . . . and yep.

The guy is the worst writer in Austin print history.  Absolute incomprehensible gibberish.

Who's in for the Insane Clown Posse/Die Spitz double dip at Bonnaroo on Thursday?

Are we finally going to get to the bottom of this magnet magic?

Fontaines DC is great.

Bought tickets to Girl and Girl in April.  Need to pick up COIN tickets for February, I think.  Also looking to buy tickets one of the Sips and Sounds shows by SXSW.  Little mini-festival at Auditorium Shores.  This one is more for my wife.

Yeah, that Armadillo/Waterloo article was weird.  I will say this... I'm glad that's who bought Waterloo.  Their pop-up on South Congress was great... it was a constant showcase of local musicians and merch profits went to local artists.  I think they donated something like $100K.  That's the right people to buy Waterloo.  New location will have better space for live music.

Speaking of Waterloo...

Robin Trower

Worth seeing or nah?  This will be at a sit down venue

I mean, I would think a concert like that will make you feel really young... or really old.

I saw ZZ Top last year and while they were great, the audience was depressing.  Never seen Rascal Scooters and walkers at a concert before.

I saw him at ACL Live five years ago, with Ian Moore opening so there was value added. Trower was great, was just as hot playing as he's ever been and I hadn't seen him since sometime in the mid-80s. His band was fine, nothing special, didn't get in the way so I'd say if you're a Trower fan you probably won't be disappointed.

Holy shit -- Wilco going on tour this spring with Waxahatchee. Playing 5/4 in Houston (White Oak Music Lawn), 5/6 in SA (The Espee) and 5/7 in Irving (Toyota Music Factory).

Presale code for these shows is "HOTSUN" and it's going on right now. I just bought 6th row tickets for Irving.

Yeah I got Irving tickets as well.

This week I also got tix for Japanese Breakfast and Al DiMeola.

I’ll probably get tickets for that new Zep movie too.

Was feeling pretty VIP at the Fillmore last night for Frank Black. I was put on the guest list by someone in the opening band, then was gifted some drink tickets by a friend on the staff there. Show was great and I always love being in that room. What a treasure.

I've so wanted to see him on this tour. I was still in high school when the Pixies split up originally. I saw Frank Black solo probably 8 times from '93 to '01. For most of those shows, it was strictly solo stuff. He finally started to play some Pixies songs in some of those sets. At last saw Pixies at ACL in'03 or whenever and have seen them several times since. In recent years, I've missed seeing the Frank Black solo stuff. I may yet do what I gotta do and make a trip to catch one of these dates. Doesn't look like they're adding anything else and it's not coming anywhere near Texas.

I saw polyphonic spree is playing a festival in longview this weekend, which should be interesting, then noticed die spitz is opening.

Can they mule some pizza king take and bakes to austin?

Tim’s kids all grew up and went to school with mine. I’d say we are acquaintances but he is very close friends with some good friends of ours.
