This is a huge step up in venue.  Maybe everyone from Surly needs to show up with banner that says "your dad's degenerate internet friends".

Trying to buy Caamp tickets with their artist presale and logged in and in the queue 15 minutes prior.

Sale starts and I'm 1333th in line

The Caamp presales have been a shit-show. AXS thought I was a bot. Bought two GA at The Bomb Factory and then my wife bought two balcony seats on AXS Premier or whatever just to make sure we can get upstairs.

Bob Dylan last night in Little Rock - dude's getting old.

The tour is kind of a jazz/beatnick cafe deal with soft lighting, they all wear hats, some of the songs are almost spoken poetry, it's different and cool.  He played the piano almost exclusively.  Maybe played the strat for 30 seconds in an early song.

However, it was also boring.  It didn't help that the people sitting next to me were the most spun-out people I have ever encountered (meth I'm guessing).  When I sat down, guy was chugging a pint of clear liquor.  Lights go out he lights up a joint.  Fair enough, it's a concert - you expect this stuff... maybe not in an indoor concert hall - get a vape or some edibles fuckstick.  But that dude was rocking back and forth, screaming and shit.  On a 1-10 scale of 1 is stone cold sober and 10 is you spontaneously combust from having too much meth in your system, this guy was way past Tuco Salamanca.  A human can't drink and smoke that much shit and still be that wound up with out meth or something similar.  It's hard to relax and lean into mellow jazz night sitting next to that.

I told my son this when we were entering "this guy is going to do it his own way - don't expect a greatest hits sing-along... we'll take what we get."  I was absolutely correct.  Then leaving, this was my commentary "dude's a legend - if he wanted to sit up there, strum one string and piss down his leg... he's earned that, and people would come watch.  But don't expect me to say "great concert." Living legend doesn't equate to awesome show."  I guess I'm officially old.

Supposedly he's playing with Willie for some Outlaw deal in Austin this summer - maybe that will be a better showing.

Unlikely.  I've seen him a couple times.  You pretty much saw what he has to offer as far as live shows.

Though if the Outlaw thing makes it to Dallas (which I assume it will, haven't looked) I'll probably go check it out.

Was supposed to see The Spyrals at a tiny venue tonight.  Like an idjut I scheduled a colonoscopy for tomorrow morning and I can't be further than 20' from my bathroom tonight.  Dumbass.

I've got a bunch of shows lined up for the summer.  So I've got that going for me.

4/11 Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

4/21 LA Witch & Daiistar

4/28 Teen Mortgage

5/10 Levitation Room

5/17 Cruel World Festival in L.A. - Devo (will be wearing my powerdome of course), New Order, Go-Gos, etc.

6/6 Primus, Pucifer, & A Perfect Circle

6/18 Tune-Yards

6/20 Broncho

9/3 Osees

9/14 Viagra Boys

And I booked the first band for my backyard concerts - Fox & Bones 8/2

Probably gonna book another 5-6 bands for shows during June through September.

Busy summer

Outlaw Festival 2025: Willie Nelson & Bob Dylan in Dallas

My son plays his guitar daily, takes lessons weekly, and loves all things music.  It's a real treat.  I peel away from the rest of my family and he and I go see concerts. Not really what I expected when I had a son but, pretty cool father/son bonding.

As far as playing together, I've got a G, Cad9, E minor and A in my skillset.  He's all "check out this riff I built on this scale."  It only takes me about 3 seconds to switch between chords so, we're not really on the same plane - yet.

It might be fun to go to this except, at 4pm on July 5th at the Cotton Bowl it's going to be at least 115 degrees and I think I would rather spend that day on a beach or beside a pool.  If you go, hydrate and don't be surprised if Dylan has a heat stroke.

We usually travel over the 4th to get away from the heat, so I'm 100% down with this reality.  The only reason I'd go is a) if we weren't traveling - obvs; and b) to take Chad Jr. to see Dylan so he can say he did.  I took him on the Outlaw tour to see Willie a couple years back, but he was too young to really pay attention/remember.  He's old enough now.

It’s just Matt from the original band now, right?

I’m going Saturday in Austin and was curious about the current makeup of the band. From Reddit, Zak (bassist) left to raise a family and to have a steady job. Shane (drummer) left because Matt was sleeping with his wife. Katie left mid tour a while back. I don’t see them getting back together anytime soon, which is a bummer. That original lineup was a lot of fun. I go back with them to a Parish showing during SXSW when they just had an EP out.

I will be there. They always put on a good show.

I ended up missing most of the show. I had the most Texan injury in the history of ever.

Scene: The time is 7:45 PM. Location is the entrance to Longhorn Ballroom. GenXer is ready for the show.

I’m walking to the entrance to show my ticket. Pulling it up on my phone. There’s two groups of people standing in front of the entrance. There’s about three feet of opening. I walk to the opening. There’s a woman on the far right of the left side group of people. She’s wearing a felt cowboy hat . As I move to the opening, she turns to her right and the brim of her cowboy hat hits me directly in the eye. I can feel the scratch on my cornea as I try to blink out the pain. No such luck. I try to fight off the pain and tell myself I can work through it. I lasted about a hour before calling it quits and driving home with one operable eye and tears streaming out of the other. It was bad.

if you went to the show and saw some guy holding his left eye, that was me.

I went to the eye doctor yesterday, and the cornea in my left eye had an 80% abrasion. I’m just now able to withstand any light.

Been a while since I've been to one of these types of shows. Brings me back to my raving days in Austin in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Those lasers are fucking awesome

Floor seats for Dead & Co at the Sphere last night was great, although there are moments when it just feels like a 3 hour John Mayer guitar solo. Headed back tonight to check out the experience from the seats.

Saw Violent Femmes

Subcontrabass Sax and a weber grilll...   pretty damned good.  I will say not the best concert...  but I give them credit for atmosphere.   There was some rando playing the "BOX" which was a basic percussion instrument.

PS beers were $13...so dang

Just back from Los Lobos.

Homeboys still bring it, but, they're still Mexicans.  Fucking roadie on the stage for about 30% of the show.  Broken amp, bad cord, whatever.  It was like Spinal Tap playing Rock and Roll Creation and the roadie has the blowtorch.

Anyway, even at their advanced ages, they still sound good and put on a good show.

And this is a small venue.  What was obviously their equipment truck was backed up to the dock.  A beat-to-shit box truck with graffiti on the side.   Fucker's are authentic, that's for sure.

Love those guys. Try and catch them every time they come through.

I've seen so many Los Lobos shows.  Sometimes they do a high energy, tight, cracklin' set, and sometimes they stretch out and it feels more like a Grateful Dead show.  I never know what I'm gonna get, but I sure prefer the former.

I saw them open for Tedeschi Trucks a couple years ago. TT does some extended jam shit and for a few of the songs LL came back and joined them. TT already has about a nine member band with two drummers. With LL it was well into the teens on stage.

Pretty cool jams though. Normal I don’t love extended jam shit but TT band throws down a serious groove.

No haze, no Connie, just a couple of beers, half a pizza and the story as I told it.

I bet old Connie is in assisted living somewhere with a few open sores.
