Maalik Murphy unfucked Duke, works his next miracle at Oregon State

Well this is an interesting new development...

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5986965/2024/12/11/duke-lands-tulane-transfer-darian-mensah-top-quarterback-in-transfer-portal-report/

Former Tulane starting quarterback Darian Mensah has committed to Duke, according to ESPN.

That’s a huge win for second-year head coach Manny Diaz, who had starting quarterback Maalik Murphy announced earlier this week he was headed to the portal.

Mensah, ranked No. 1 among all available quarterbacks according to The Athletic, ranked sixth nationally in passing efficiency as a redshirt freshman, completing 65.9 percent of his 287 pass attempts for 2,723 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions.

He also showed some elusiveness late in the year on the ground, rushing for 57 yards and a touchdown in a win over Navy and 41 yards in the AAC Championship Game loss to Army.

“He’s a future NFL quarterback,” an SEC scouting director said.

Duke went 9-3 with Murphy this past season.

take with a grain of salt but the word from Duke fans on Reddit is that Mensah was a done deal and Maalik was forced out.

Duke upgraded. Doubtful that Maalik does the same if this is true.

Maalik’s NIL check was going to get smaller.  So constructively, yes, that’s kinda what happened.  Duke fans are pissing me off though blaming Maalik for leaving after more or less giving Leonard a pass last year. I wonder why.

Hell, we've got guys doing the same to him over in the recruiting portal thread. I'm not going to shit on a kid who left his backup role to be a starting QB somewhere else which also happens to come with more money. As to when/how they do it... they are a backup that's not playing who has a chance to lock down a starting role elsewhere... you just go.   Duke definitely pushed him out and he'll find another home so good for him.

That ESPN story must be wrong. @closetojumping said it was about money.

well if the story about Duke cutting his NIL deal is true then he's not wrong.

On Texas Sports Unfiltered today, they said Maalik was out the minute Darian visited the campus, but who really knows.

“real story”? The same entity that pushed him to go into the portal before the playoff last year, as Texas’ backup QB, is the same entity pushing him into the portal now. And Murphy is complicit. They’re grabbing as much money from the highest bidder as they can. Feigning confusion about this just makes you guys look like dipshits.

Smart then. Dumb now.

Yea didn’t get either of those schools at all.
I don’t know anything about OUs new OC but I could see a school like that looking for him. Big enough to be able to throw some money at him but in such dire straits that they are desperate for anyone who’s decent to play the position.

lol no he isn’t going to get offered by OU.

Heard the same. OC and players were underwhelmed by MM and wanted an upgrade.

It is the coaches job to upgrade the roster.  Even if it means recruiting over a current player.  We see it all the time in the other sports.

Hence why I said “school like that”.

He will not get significant money from any school with a pedigree like OU. He will not start at a school, unless it’s an emergency, at a school with a better program than Duke.

No doubt. In this new Wild West, if players can so easily transfer, coaches ought to be able to do the same.

You mean an emergency like OUs situation. It sounds like Miami and Auburn are both interested. Not really sure what point you’re making.

He’d never start at any of those schools. Maybe Miami. OU would’ve had an emergency situation 5-7 years ago. They can attract a much better QB than MM and will. Or roll with JA.

“He’d never start… well maybe he might”

Do you think Miami and Auburn are interested in bringing him in as a backup? That wouldn’t make much sense given the QB situations at those schools. OU has an emergency situation now. That said that won’t be going Malik as it looks like the new OC plays a much different style. Again, I’m just not sure what point you’re making.

Good grief, if he's not good enough for Duke then he's not going to any P5 program most likely. He wants to start so he probably needs to be looking at the MAC or Mountain West.

That he wants to play and isn’t going somewhere to sit. Those schools would love to have him as depth but have better options than MM to start.

I don't know where else to post this, but have a question about going into the portal. If you go in the portal now and with the playoffs extending longer, is it possible for someone in the portal to get picked up by a school in the playoffs, enroll, and actually play in a playoff game?

Hell, Jerritt Elliot recruited another P4 setter to compete with Ella Swindle, who led us to a title as a freshman.  And then she lost the job!

Coaches have to win or they get fired.  You upgrade your roster when there's a better option and someone was a better option than MM.

Who do Miami and Auburn have to start at QB next year? The other name I hear Auburn considering is Ashton Daniels. He ain’t exactly a world beater.

His numbers are meh. Quinn’s numbers are significantly better and everyone wants to fucking hate crime his ass. MM wasn’t a problem but they can do better, yes.

Lord, you can't even play for a different SEC school if you transfer after spring ball, you think a player would be eligible to play for a CFP team if they transferred before the playoffs?

Its Duke. You could put VY there and he'd go 9-3

Duke actually had a good defense

#2 in scoring defense in the ACC

#2 in yards per play in the ACC

#24 in FEI Defense (Clemson was #23)

They were not winning based on their offense. 12th in ACC in scoring. 13th is yards/play in the ACC. 90th in FEI offense

They played nobody!  Their 5 conf wins were some of the worst teams in the ACC, their non-conf sucked ass and they lost to SMU, Miami and GT.  They didn't even play Clemson, Syracuse or Louisville.

They absolutely should’ve beat SMU, where he played a typical ok game.

Based on the lack of great teams (and QBs) this year, VY would have Duke in the playoff and probably win it all.

Jk, but maybe not?

Nah VY would’ve only managed the same 9-3 record that Maalik magically willed them to with a 130 QBR.
