Jeff Howe:Ā Ā Per Sark, X-rays were negative on Xavier Worthy's injury, which he said is a lower left leg. He was in a boot after the game.
Also, Sark said Moro Ojomo suffered an ankle injury in the UTSA game that kept him off of the travel squad.Ā
Ā

Thats why we saw Lesso Ojomo. We could have used him after we let Tech run 100 plays.

Did Finkley, Tapp, and/or Burke even make the trip? Really could have used them for depth on the DL yesterday, especially if Ojomo didnā€™t make the trip.Ā

Finkley played, not sure on the others. They seem to be bringing Burke along slowly.Ā

Get Ewers back, stop playing soft against the pass giving up easy completions, and the wins will come. This team is way better than last year at the most important positions. Still lacking a bit and a lot of youth but that will get plugged with experience and NIL going forward.Ā

Finish this year strong, take another step up next year, then contend with Arch and Co after.Ā

This team has gotten hit with injuries at just about every spot it needed to stay healthy at. Even if we lost Bijan for an extended period of time, it wouldnā€™t have been as bad as what weā€™ve dealt with.Ā

We need to get healthy, then the wins will come in bunches

Transfer portal series: Sarkisian's big offseason investment yet to pay off. Emphasis on yet

Eric Nahlinā€¢10/04/22

9PD5Us51lWFpCoLw&w=312&h=180&c=7&r=0&o=5

Entering the 2022 season much of the excitement for Texas fans centered around the offseason additions of a talented offensive quintet. That was perfectly understandable as each has shown quality in college, has significant untapped upside, or in the case of wide receiverĀ Isaiah Neyor, both.

While you lament the fact I didnā€™t call them a Quinntet, Iā€™ll continue.

Bad luck struck early in August during the teamā€™s first scrimmage when both Neyor and offensive line stapleĀ Junior AngilauĀ were lost for the season. Just like that, the quintet was a quartet.

August would claim two more as tight end Jahleel Billingsley and receiver Agiye Hall each had issues arise that led to suspensions.

Quarterback Quinn Ewers would win the job in August and after a pretty even debut against Louisiana-Monroe got off to a blistering start versus Alabama. In that contest he was injured near the end of the first quarter and he hasnā€™t played since.

Of the five, former Iowa State Cyclone Tarique Milton is the only one who hasnā€™t missed time.

To really hammer this home, take a look at the production. Then compare it against the amount of talent this group has or the expected value each would have offered, specifically Ewers and Neyor.

  • QBĀ Quinn Ewers: 25/36, 69.4%, 359 yards, 10 yards per attempt, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception, 166 rating
  • WRĀ Tarique Milton: 1 reception for 28 yards
  • WRĀ Agiye Hall: 1 reception for 7 yards
  • WRĀ Isaiah Neyor: Out for the year
  • TEĀ Jahleel Billingsley: Six game suspension lifts next week

Given the offseason transfer portal scholarships allocated to offense rather than defense ā€” 5 to 2, with cornerĀ Ryan WattsĀ playing quite well on defense ā€” it has to be frustrating for Steve Sarkisian to see so much talent on the sidelines. At the same time, he should be excited by the development heā€™s seen on both sides of the ball from his returning players and 2022 signees.

A quibble some might have is the lack of an addition on offensive line, but IT detailed early on they were going to play the long game with the talented offensive linemen they were set to sign. And of course, that decision will pay off in the long run but it was compounded by the unforeseen loss of Angilau.

Texas is sitting at 3-2, and itā€™s hard not to wonder what might have been if Ewers didnā€™t get hurt. But thereā€™s a flip side to that, too.Ā Hudson CardĀ has played well in his stead, as have so many other returning players who have shown improvement from last year.Ā Jordan WhittingtonĀ has been big at receiver,Ā as has Jaā€™Tavion Sanders at tight end. That has helped mitigate the losses mentioned above.

What happens when this group gets more healthy and more acclimated into the offense?

Texas wonā€™t get Neyor back this season. His value will be delayed a year, but he will return and the offense will benefit. Other than that, Texas should start seeing the offseason acquisitions start to assert themselves more as the season wears on.

Likely as soon as Saturday.

Banks and Hutson getting some praise

Quote

Despite an influx of transfer players filling voids on college football teams, plenty of true freshman have made an impact in 2022.

We have seen highly touted prospects turn into nationally recognized names and stat leaders in a matter of weeks. Georgia hit gold with safetyĀ Malaki Starks, who has stepped right in and contributed.

Penn State has seen a resurgence on offense with a pair of first-year running backs --Ā Nicholas SingletonĀ andĀ Kaytron AllenĀ -- but the staff also found a gem in linebackerĀ Abdul Carter, who is second on the team with 18 tackles.

Not every true freshman who has made an impact was a five-star or top prospect in the 2022 class, either. We've seen four-star Cal running backĀ Jaydn OttĀ emerge as a leader on offense, three-star defensive endĀ Gabe JacasĀ has been an important piece of Illinois' defense and three-starĀ AJ SwannĀ is now Vanderbilt's starting quarterback.

We ranked the top 25 freshmen through the first five weeks of the season. Of the 19Ā five-star recruits in the 2022 cycle, only five of them make this list. Conversely, eight of the top 25 freshmen on this list weren't in theĀ ESPN 300Ā rankings as recruits. Let's dig into the list, with the first 12 written by Luginbill and the final 13 written by VanHaaren:

1.Ā Malaki Starks, S

GeorgiaĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 12

Starks was the former No. 12 prospect in the ESPN 300 and has played up to that billing so far in 2022. He plays like a veteran on a defense that lost five players in the first round of last year's NFL draft. He's mature, and the game is not too big for him. At times he flashes his dominance. As Georgia's second-leading tackler (23), and with two interceptions, Starks has proven he can play any position in the secondary.

2.Ā Abdul Carter, OLB

Penn StateĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: unranked (four stars)

A former four-star prospect, Carter has developed into a tough-to-stop defender. He's the Nittany Lions' nextĀ Micah Parsons, which is only part of the reason why he wears the coveted No. 11. With 18 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble already, Carter is showing signs he will be an elite player who can become a high draft choice and likely three-and-out guy.

3.Ā Nicholas Singleton, RB

Penn State | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 57

The No. 3 RB in the 2022 class has certainly turned heads with his explosive start to the season. With a team-high 463 rushing yards (third among all freshmen), Singleton is the best thing to happen to Penn State sinceĀ Saquon Barkley. The 6-foot, 219-pound Singleton has it all: speed, power, vision and contact balance, although he is still developing in the passing game.

Penn State running back Nicholas Singleton might be the best Nittany Lions running back since Saquon Barkley.Ā Matthew OHaren-USA TODAY Sports

4.Ā Quinshon Judkins, RB

Ole MissĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: unranked (three stars)

The former three-star running back has a skill set reminiscent of former Alabama standoutĀ Josh Jacobs. There are similarities, although Judkins may be more powerful. He's a strong runner that has really good ball skills out of the backfield. He has eclipsed 100 yards in three of five games for the 5-0 Rebels.

5.Ā Jaydn Ott, RB

CalĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: unranked (four stars)

A former four-star recruit ranked just outside of the ESPN 300, Ott has become the feature player in Cal's offense not just as a running back, but also as a passing game target. The 6-foot, 205-pound Ott is on pace for 1,200 rushing yards and 40-plus catches. He has already scored seven touchdowns this season.

6.Ā Will Campbell, OT

LSUĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 14

The No. 14 prospect of the 2022 class, Campbell has been as advertised given the state of LSU's offensive front. This area has settled in largely as a result of two freshman. Campbell could play on either side. He has allowed just one sack on 159 pass-blocking plays.

7.Ā Nick Emmanwori, DB

South CarolinaĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: unranked (three stars)

It looks like Shane Beamer was right, and the rest of us were wrong. The former three-star held only one Power 5 offer, and that was from South Carolina. He may eventually move to outside linebacker, but he can hold up at safety. He leads the Gamecocks with 34 tackles, and his 94.4% tackle percentage is above the league average of 90%.

8.Ā Kelvin Banks Jr., OL

TexasĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 33

The No. 4 offensive tackle in 2022, Banks has stepped in and has made his presence felt immediately, allowing just one sack this season. It's no shocker Banks, a 6-5, 318-pound left tackle, has found himself in the starting lineup given Texas was so poor in the offensive line a year ago.

9.Ā Cole Hutson, OL

Texas | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: unranked (four stars)

A former four-star prospect, Hutson has stepped in to help plug holes along this Texas offensive line and has been doing an admirable job. As mentioned with Banks above, Hutson was expected to be in this position. He can also play multiple positions for this group as they continue to grow. The 6-5, 303-pound right guard has yet to surrender a sack this year.

10.Ā Jaishawn Barham, LB

MarylandĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 137

The No. 15 outside linebacker recruit in the country, Barham has filled an immediate need for the Terps. He's their second-leading tackler (30 total) and has one sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss. He has flashed in many areas, from bringing pressure to stopping the run. Maryland needs more players like Barham if the 4-1 Terps want to climb in the Big Ten East.

11.Ā Dasan McCullough, DE

IndianaĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 43

McCullough was projected as an outside linebacker but has shined as a designated pass-rusher. The former top-50 prospect has become a problem off the edge and against the run. McCullough, one of the highest-rated recruits Tom Allen has signed, has four sacks (tied for second in the Big Ten) and brought pressures on 14.9% of pass-rush attempts, above the FBS average of 8.4%.

12.Ā Shemar Stewart, DE

Texas A&MĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 7

Stewart is one of the few players from the Aggies' vaunted 2022 recruiting class that has flashed through five weeks of the season. The former five-star prospect has done a great job as a pass-rusher -- his 1.5 sacks are tied for the team lead -- but he must develop consistency. After averaging 23 snaps the first two games, he has played in 48 and 43 defensive snaps over the Aggies' next two games. When he is on his game, the 6-4, 285-pound Stewart is a force.

13.Ā Dane Key, WR

KentuckyĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 215

Key was the No. 215 prospect in the 2022 class and the fourth highest-ranked commitment for Kentucky. He was a multi-sport athlete in high school and a Kentucky legacy, as his father, Donte, also played football for the Wildcats. Kentucky lost its top two receivers from last season inĀ Wan'Dale RobinsonĀ andĀ Josh Ali, so there was opportunity for Key to contribute early on. So far, through five games, Key is tied for the most receiving touchdowns on the team withĀ Tayvion RobinsonĀ at three apiece. He is third on the team in receiving yards with 269 and is averaging 53.8 receiving yards per game. Those three touchdowns are tied for the most by true freshman wide receivers.

14.Ā LT Overton, DE

Texas A&M | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 6

Overton was originally the No. 1 recruit in the 2023 class until heĀ reclassified to the 2022 cycleĀ and was still ranked as the No. 6 player overall and a five-star. He signed with Texas A&M, adding to the incredible defensive line haul that included seven ESPN 300 defensive linemen, four of whom were five-stars. In his first season, Overton has 10 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one sack and one quarterback hurry. Considering he should technically be a senior in high school and turns 18 years old this month, the fact that he's only starting to flash his ability at the FBS level is remarkable.

15.Ā Gabe Jacas, EDGE

IllinoisĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: unranked (three stars)

Jacas is part of a surging Illinois team that's 4-1 on the season and seemingly ascending under head coach Bret Bielema. He was a three-star prospect in the 2022 class out of Fort Pierce, Florida. Once a Tulane commit, he signed with the Illini and ranks fourth on the team in tackles for loss and is tied for the most sacks with three. He has 12 total tackles and two quarterback hurries in what has been a breakout season for Jacas and his team. The Illini lead the Big Ten in points allowed per game and rank 11th among all FBS teams in sacks, and Jacas' role cannot be understated.

16.Ā Emory Jones, OT

LSU | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 159

Jones was listed at 6-5, 330 pounds out of high school and was the No. 3 guard in the class. He was one of two ESPN 300 offensive line commits in the 2022 cycle for new coach Brian Kelly, along with tackleĀ Will Campbell, and both have already made an impact. Now 6-6, 335 pounds, Jones made his first start at right tackle in the third game of the season against Mississippi State, and Kelly said after the game that Jones exceeded expectations and is ahead of schedule. Jones allowed zero pressures in that game against Mississippi State and has performed at a high level so far this season, which is a difficult thing for a true freshman to do along the offensive line.

17.Ā AJ Swann, QB

VanderbiltĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: unranked (three stars)

Swann was a three-star recruit out of Canton, Georgia, who signed with Vanderbilt as the No. 29 pocket-passing quarterback in the class. After attempting only seven passes in the first two games, he replacedĀ Mike WrightĀ during Vanderbilt's third game of the season against Wake Forest, throwing for 146 yards and two touchdowns. He took over as the starter the following week, throwing for 255 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-28 win over Northern Illinois. "He's been a consistent playmaker for us in practice and a guy that has shown command of an offense," coach Clark LeaĀ said after the Northern Illinois victory. His six passing touchdowns are the most this season for all true freshmen quarterbacks.

18.Ā Omarion Hampton, RB

North CarolinaĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 182

North Carolina lost its top two rushers from last season in running backĀ Ty ChandlerĀ and quarterbackĀ Sam Howell, who are both now in the NFL. Hampton has stepped up, as he leads the team with 293 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. He is averaging 5.2 yards per carry, and his five touchdowns have him tied for third-most among ACC running backs.

19.Ā Tetairoa McMillan, WR

ArizonaĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 145

Arizona needed playmakers on offense around transfer quarterbackĀ Jayden de Laura. The staff added UTEP transferĀ Jacob Cowing, who is leading the team in receiving yards (566) and receiving touchdowns (seven), but the Wildcats also had a big recruiting win by signing McMillan. He was the No. 144 prospect overall and a 6-4, 195-pound receiver out of Anaheim, California. In his first season, he is second on the team with three receiving touchdowns and has 290 receiving yards on 16 catches for an average of 18.13 yards per catch. He's a big target for de Laura and has had a touchdown catch in three of five games so far this season for the Wildcats. McMillan, Cowing and de Laura have been a big part of Arizona's improvement on offense, going from 17.2 points per game last season to 32.4 this season.

20.Ā Dani Dennis-Sutton, DE

Penn State | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 80

The Nittany Lions had a bounce-back recruiting class in 2022; after finishing the 2021 cycle with just four ESPN 300 commitments, the staff signed 12 in 2022. Dennis-Sutton, one of five top-100 recruits, was an important addition as Penn State sought to replace pass-rush production fromĀ Arnold EbiketieĀ andĀ Jesse Luketa. Through the first five games, Dennis-Sutton leads the team with three sacks and is second on the team with three tackles for loss. He has one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry as well and is part of an impressive freshman class for the Nittany Lions.

21.Ā Shemar James, LB

FloridaĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 113

Florida lost quite a bit on defense from last season with linebackersĀ Mohamoud Diabate,Ā Ty'Ron HopperĀ andĀ Jeremiah MoonĀ all gone, as well as defensive end Zachary Carter. James, a 6-3, 200-pound linebacker, has played in all five games so far for the Gators. He is tied for fifth on the team in total tackles with 25 and also has one sack and three quarterback hurries.

22.Ā Harold Perkins Jr., OLB

LSU | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 4

LSU fought hard to get Perkins in the 2022 class as a five-star linebacker ranked No. 4 overall. He was in Cypress, Texas, but signed with the Tigers, returning to Louisiana, where he is originally from. Though he hasn't started every game this season, he has played in all five, and he is currently second on the team in total tackles with 23. He has two tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and three quarterback hurries for an LSU defense that is allowing 293.8 yards per game, third in the SEC.

23.Ā Kaytron Allen, RB

Penn State | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 143

Nicholas SingletonĀ has gotten most of the attention so far this season, but Allen has been a big part of Penn State's run success as well. He has 303 rush yards on the season, which is 160 fewer yards than Singleton. Allen has five touchdowns and is averaging 5.3 yards per carry. He was the No. 10 running back in the class and ranked No. 142 overall. Allen has started to come on strong over the past two weeks, rushing for 197 yards and a touchdown. If he continues improving, Penn State will have a formidable duo at running back with Allen and Singleton.

24.Ā Lander Barton, OLB

UtahĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: 214

Utah lost star linebackerĀ Devin LloydĀ andĀ Nephi Sewell, its two leading tacklers from last season. The coaching staff brought inĀ Gabe ReidĀ from Stanford andĀ Mohamoud DiabateĀ from Florida, as well as Barton in the 2022 recruiting class. Ranked the No. 5 inside linebacker (No. 213 overall), Barton was the Utes' second highest-ranked commit in the class behind quarterbackĀ Nathan Johnson, and he has already produced this season. Barton is seventh on the team in total tackles (15) and has 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a quarterback hurry on the Pac-12's best defense.

25.Ā Richard Reese, RB

BaylorĀ | 2022 ESPN 300 ranking: unranked (three stars)

Baylor's two leading rushers from last season are gone, and the Bears needed help trying to replaceĀ Abram SmithĀ (1,601 yards and 12 touchdowns), andĀ Trestan EbnerĀ (799 yards and two touchdowns). The coaches signed Reese in the 2022 class as a three-star and the No. 37 running back overall. He was a 5-10, 180-pound prospect who didn't have a lot of bigger school offers. Through five games, he now leads the team in rush yards with 400 and rushing touchdowns with seven. Those seven touchdowns have him tied for 10th most among all FBS players and eighth among all FBS running backs.
