Lots of heliocentric teams with guys with insane usage numbers.

With teams putting more emphasis on resting their stars in the regular season, that percentage dropped in recent seasons despite the trend toward heliocentric, high-usage play. In 2014-15, the leading scorer produced just 23.5% of team points -- an all-time low. That mark was still just 24% last season but has jumped back up to 25% so far in 2022-23 -- the highest in 12 years.

Here's a fun stat:

So far this year, Shai has amassed 1,140 total points.

Paul George and Kawhi have scored 1,057 COMBINED.

Wow.  Did not know that.  If you just stopped now, Okie City won the trade with also getting Trey Mann and Williams.  That's not counting all the draft picks to come.

I don't know that it was that terrible of a trade for them. They don't sign the Nephew (for nothing in return) if they don't make the move. The problem is PG and the Nephew just can't stay healthy. I don't think anybody wants to face a healthy Clippers team in the playoffs. And it's not exactly like the Thunder have built a superteam around SGA from those picks. It was probably the right move for both franchises. It's not like the Rudy Gobert deal.

Unrelated to any of that... there's a lot more parity in the league than I can ever remember. There has been so much young and foreign talent infused into the league over the past few years that I think the floor has been raised league-wide. I wonder if there is going to be more parity going forward? The champion has been extremely predictable going back pretty much to when Bird and Magic entered the league. Notwithstanding the occasional outlier, it was Celtics/Lakers through most of the 80's, then Chicago, then Spurs/Lakers, and then Lebron/Warriors. Maybe Wenbanyama turns out to be that great and tilts the floor for a decade, but it seems like there are more true contenders and more unpredictability than there has been in about 30 years.

It's definitely true that the individual skill level of players on their first day in the league is far higher than in the past. The evolution of the game to focus on the 3 ball has helped equalize things too. Any team can get hot or go cold on a given night whereas teams from the 90s or early 2000s built around a dominant big in the paint or a dominant guard driving to the rack probably have a smaller standard deviation game to game. The three ball is also something any player can master with reps. You have to be touched by the basketball fairy at birth to be Ja or AI whose athleticism just cannot be manufactured. But everybody can practice catch and shoot corner 3s and achieve a decent proficiency. So the shift in tactics opened up a wider pool of talent that can effectively implement those tactics.

I'd agree with that.  I think both teams would make that trade again, really.  The Clippers wanted to win now and needed PG to get "the nephew" (well played).  Ballmer believes he can sell the long term for the short term and just buy back the long term later with money.  (He's right.)  Those picks they gave up are in the future and even then, they'll take 2-4 years after that to develop as players.

On your second point, I'd agree with that as well.  I was at the Mavericks/Thunder game the other night and both teams were playing with a lot of second team players due to injuries and what not and still, everyone on the floor could move and shoot, even guys who are borderline NBA guys.  Even 10-15 years ago, teams would have 2-3 shooters and then some defensive guys who could be average at best on offense.  Now everyone can shoot 1-12 on the roster.  That explains the increased scoring, although defense might be bad along with it.

I have an irrational dislike of Ben Simmons. But come the fuck on, Durant is out for a few weeks, and this is the effort you put in through 3 quarters?

How the fuck you gonna get paid a top 20 salary and only take 2 shots. They gave a max contract to a guy that is scared to shoot. And while the 13 assists/9 rebounds is nice, he averages 6.7/6 . At least he's been working on his free throws

Simmons had his 2nd scoreless game of his career last night.

Both games have came this season.

I watched the Nets/Celtics, and it's such a weird thing.  There are moments where Simmons does something great---like dropping a dime from 40 feet on the break---and others he looks like he just picked up a basketball for the first time and he has no idea what to do with it.  His shot attempts were downright laughable, and he passed up a layup attempt to try to get an assist and ended up throwing the ball out of bounds.

In my worthless opinion, if you can get him in a 3 on 2 situation or something full court, he just plays.  But if you get in a half court offense, he has no idea what is going on.  It's as if he refuses to play half court, but is willing to do cool fun shit when you get to run up and down the floor.

Sounds like he just wants to hoop and not actually be a pro in the NBA.

not getting enough love: mike brown, the sacramento kings, and domantas sabonis. it's too bad they're out there in sacramento and only play on TV on a few random occasions when half the country is already asleep. fun team, and they've got Sabonis doing his best Jokic impersonation, and i gotta say, it's a pretty damn good impersonation. his numbers lately are stupid. tonight: 19 pts, 16 ast, 15 reb, 2 blk, 2 stl. ho hum.

How good is Vegas at setting a line?

I bet all 9 games today (at casino in Lake Charles) and they nailed 3 of the 9 spreads dead balls on and missed 2 more by 1/2 a point and 1 point.

How good am I?

I hit a 4 team money line parley hitting 8/1 (Denver, Sacramento, Knicks and Pelicans) and I went 5-1-3 ATS betting individual games.
I’d actually love to claim I’m that good but they are so good at the spread it is like flipping coins.

So it gets better. I go to cash my ticket and I should have won like $205. They paid me $800. No idea how they fucked that up. I ran like hell out of there.

Wow... this is one of the worst final possessions I have ever seen. Lebron was having a great game, 35 points on 15-23 shooting, but Russ doesn't even look at him for the final shot. Stop me if you've heard this one before... lol

Lakers down 1 with about 15 seconds left don't call a timeout and let Westbrook bring it up himself. He, of course, doesn't pass the ball or even bother communicating with his teammates on the set, he runs at the rim and tries to pass out of a contest by Embiid plus help from another guy, and he fucks it all up and turns over the ball.  What a colossally selfish moron.

I can't believe I'm coming to the defense of Westbrook here, but I don't think it's that horrible of a play. The execution was obviously lousy but he's being checked by Embiid on the perimeter. It's a mismatch that he should be able to exploit to beat him off the dribble. All four of his teammates are standing around watching including whoever the fuck #35 is bringing the help defender right to him. As soon as you see that mismatch, get the fuck out of the way. And if you don't clear out, set a pick or at least move a little to get open. I don't think Westbrook had much of a choice with the clock running down. #35 is should have cleared out but if he's going to clog the lane, at least give him a better passing angle. #7 is late getting to the corner so he allows Harden to check two guys at once. It's terrible spacing except for Lebron who is standing on the opposite side of the court 30 feet from the basket doing absolutely nothing. Horrible execution all the way around. Westbrook also made a great defensive play at the other end right beforehand, forcing Embiid into a bad contested fadeaway from about 17 feet.

Listened to Bill Simmons on Zach Lowe's podcast and they went through a lot of the Western Conference teams.  He had an interesting point on the Clippers.  He said they should trade either PG or The Nephew because over the years, you'll never be able to rely on both of them being healthy together for long stretches of time.  He said to trade PG because there is no market for The Nephew.  Made the point that if the goal is to win a title, both PG and The Nephew would have to be healthy for an entire 2-3 month stretch for the playoffs.  The roster was a supporting cast for the two stars and if it's just one of the stars and the cast, that's basically a .500 team.

I had never thought of that but he's right.  They'll only have a few draft picks in the coming years to build on and they could get a lot for PG right now.  He mentioned Philly and Sacramento as options.

Is Paul George actually doing well this year? I haven't followed the Clippers at all, I have no idea what either of them would be worth on the market right now. He's making 42m this year, and has 2+1(po) years left on his contract. Not sure what he would fetch in a trade, but that would be something.

His numbers are in line with his historical averages so yeah, he's having a good year.  Only played in 30 out of 45 games, though, and who knows how much longer he'll be out.  Inured a lot last year, too.
