I'm not sure you people understand how badly we're going to fuck them up.

Yeah, you people.

I believe. Need an ass-kicking most of all for my older brother, who comes down to visit me for a game every year and hasn’t seen a win since his first time in DKR (ND in 2016). This will be his first Texas-OU game. Not sure I’ll ever get him to come down again if we give away this opportunity.

Yes!!!

1977 was my 4th Tex-OU game.

Earl Christian Campbell and I were both freshman in 1974 and lived in Jester East; he was a god-like physical specimen of a man, and I was not.  Earl was highly recruited and very well known in Austin, having led John Tyler to the High School Championship over Austin Reagan in 1973. Reagan won the prior Championships in '67, '68, & '70.

In 1974, time and again, Earl disappeared as he went into the middle of the OU line, just getting swallowed up by OU's defense.  OU won 16-13.

In 1975, with OU leading 24-17 late in the 4th quarter, OU faced a 3rd & 8 from their own 10.  With Texas chomping at the bit, Joe "Smoke through a keyhole" Washington quick-kicked a 76 yard punt down to the Texas 14 yard line, giving OU 5 in a row over Texas, and eventually back to back National Championships. The '74 & '75 OU teams were the best college football teams nobody ever saw, as OU was on probation and banned from TV.  OU had a 28 game winning streak, back to back National Championships, 8 All Americans each year, Joe Washington, & the Selmon brothers.

In 1976, we had the best seats in the house, ~ 15 rows up right on the 50 yard line, immediately next to 36,000+ Okies, w/ 36,000 Texans at my back.  Incredibly intense, hair standing up on the back of my neck. No way we were leaving Dallas without getting in a fight. Game ended in a 6-6 tie. Disappointing season. Darrell Royal's last year at Texas.

1977: Preseason, OU came is as #1 and Texas was unranked.

Fred Akers scrapped the Wishbone and put Earl in the "I".  Texas started 3-0, winning 44-0, 68-0 and 72-15 v. Rice (Texas was favored by ~59 over Rice, and I was drunk, or course, and hollering for Texas to score at the end of the game to cover my bet). Earl running from the "I" was a gift from the gods. Thank you Fred!

The vibe in Austin was already electric.  The Armadillo, Mother Earth, The Silver Dollar and Willie & Waylon and the boys and no cover to see Stevie Ray Vaughan.  Earl & Texas Football supercharged it.

Friday night; for Texas-OU weekend, Dallas would block off 8-10? blocks of Commerce Street for the crush of people in Dallas, and the crowd would move in a long counter-clockwise circle along the sidewalks on either side of the street. Screaming, yelling, no standing, just keep moving, or else. Arrests would number in the hundreds. We (12-14 of us) had a 2 rooms in the Baker Hotel that fronted Commerce Street.  Seems like Dallas County was dry back then, but they allowed open containers on the street that night? We'd make a drink, walk the big circle, up to the room for refills, and repeated as necessary. At midnight, maybe 1am?, they lined up big fire engines w/ their water cannons and slowly paraded down the street, washing everything, including the people, off the sidewalks and the streets.  I fondly remember watching that from our hotel room, yelling at people below to run!

Oh yeah, they also had a football game that weekend.

October 8, 1977. #5 Texas v. #2 OU.

Damn, my head hurts!!!

Earl scored the only TD on a highlight reel 24 yard run right before halftime, leading Texas to a 13-6 win over OU for the first time in 7 years.   He finished 23 for 124 yards, 1 TD, (0-1 passing with an interception), accelerating his Heisman Trophy run.

Please note All American's Earl Campbell (standing), LB Daryl Hunt (85 ) and NG Reggie Kinlaw (62).

Randy McEachern came in off the bench in the 2nd quarter (the first 2 Texas Qb's got knocked out of the game) to guide Texas to a hard fought win, and the #1 ranking. Russell Erxleben kicked 64 & 58 yard field goals and missed one from 69 yards.  Johnnie Johnson, Collin's All American DB father, had a key 4th quarter play, stopping the OU QB inches short on 4th down at the Texas 5 yard line. Erxleben had a 69 yard punt w/ 2 1/2 minutes left to seal the game.  Points were hard to get back in the day.

I only remember part of Fred's quote early in the week, something about expecting a tough, physical game, "... they better have their head gear strapped on tight!"

We choose not to linger in Dallas after the game and made a beeline back to Austin to a Mardi Gras-like scene down on the Drag.

By far, my most memorable weekend of College Football.

Texas Shocks Oklahoma, 13-6

The Rites of Autumn

Steve Ross tells the story about this game, which is one of the first he covered. Supposedly when Randy McEachern came in after the first two QB’s got injured, he tried to give a pep talk in the huddle. One of the senior offensive lineman snapped at him, “Just shut the fuck up and hand the ball to Ear!”

Gotta Win Saturday Texas !!!  😎

'I miss that hat': Texas' 2018 class looking for second win over OU in six tries

Members of Texas’ 2018 class were just freshmen the last time the Longhorns defeated the Oklahoma Sooners. Led by veteran players Sam Ehlinger, Charles Omenihu, Chris Nelson, and Lil’Jordan Humphrey, UT topped Kyler Murray and the Sooners thanks to a walk-off field goal by Cameron Dicker, the lowest rated member of the 2018 class.

The Sooners got the best of the Longhorns later in the season in a rematch at the Big 12 Championship game, but UT retained the Golden Hat, the rivalry’s trophy, until the 2019 contest. OU took back the gilded head covering in 2019, and kept it thanks to thrilling victories in 2020 and 2021.

That’s all to say, members of Texas’ top-three #revolUTion18 class are 1-4 against the Sooners.

Seven players from the original 27-man group remain on the roster. Many transferred, while others found spots in the NFL. But for DeMarvion Overshown, Anthony Cook, Keondre Coburn, D’Shawn Jamison, Christian Jones, and the injured Junior Angilau, this weekend’s Red River Shootout is likely their last shot at wearing the Golden Hat.

Or in Moro Ojomo’s case, the first time.

“I didn’t wear it because I didn’t feel like I won it,” Ojomo said Monday. ”I need to wear it.”

His teammates took a different approach. On Monday, Jamison called wearing the hat a “great experience.” Jones also put on the hat, and recorded the memory on his phone. It’s a picture he still has to this day.

“It was awesome,” Jones said Monday. ”I just remember I couldn’t stop smiling.”

Those memories are now almost four years old. Defeat in the last four meetings is more recent in the minds of those players. For Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian, he knows that will draw their attention. However, he doesn’t want to overemphasize those previous defeats in Dallas and make them the primary motivating factor.

“We can’t harbor our past,” Sarkisian said Monday. “We’ve got to learn from our past, and we’ve got to move forward. We’ve got to take the necessary steps.”

Sarkisian isn’t excluded from that advice. His first experience in the Red River Shootout last year didn’t go as planned. The Longhorns surrendered an early three-touchdown lead to lose on a walk-off rushing touchdown.

Sarkisian isn’t gunning for revenge for 2021. Rather, he wants victory over Oklahoma in 2022.

A lack of focus on revenge makes sense. Oklahoma has a new head coach in Brent Venables. The quarterback that terrorized Texas, Caleb Williams, followed former Sooner head coach Lincoln Riley to USC, as did many other players. As coaches like to say, that was last year’s team and not this year’s team.

But the drive for the Longhorns to defeat their primary rival is there. Even with Oklahoma’s struggles in recent weeks versus Kansas State and TCU, the Texas head coach downplayed the idea his team might overlook a Sooner team in search of its footing and with questions at multiple positions.

“Last time I checked this morning when I walked in our building, the Golden Hat wasn’t in there,” Sarkisian said. ”We’ve got plenty to get ourselves prepared to go for.”

Sarkisian, a self-described college football fan, repeatedly mentions how much he enjoys the pageantry associated with the Red River Shootout. He said Monday he had goosebumps thinking about the idea of running out of the tunnel.

That anticipation was echoed by other players, many who may be surrounded by the split burnt orange and crimson crowd for the final time in their careers.

“There’s nothing like that Texas-OU rivalry,” Ojomo said.

Said Jamison: ”I’m looking forward to this week.”

Jones thought similar. ”It’s a big week,” he said.

When they take the field against Oklahoma, there will be one goal in mind. Texas’ fifth-year seniors want to regain the trophy that has eluded the program since 2018.

“I miss that hat,” Ojomo said.

Who is quoted in this?

BJ Johnson, one of my favorite players of all time. 🤘

Sad, that the O couldn't just say fuck it, and run their own plays. Davis and Mack were the definition of "Turtle" in this game. Hit them in the mouth and keep doing it until they stop you. Just win, Baby!

Bet we have the least sacks on that list.

Penn State- 13

Texas- 11

Illinois- 16

UCLA- 13

Washington State- 18

We are pretty much in the middle of the pack nationally when it comes to sacks. Notable teams with less sacks than us: Baylor (10), Ohio State (10), Iowa State (8), Georgia (6!!!), A&M (6), Utah (9)

There was that article that sacks are an outdated stat, as QB pressures should lead to bad throws, INTs or short scrambles by the QB. We really have been screwed by more mobile QBs or just flat out missed tackles, like Watts’ against Bryce Young

This is what makes this game great.  Stonie was not a star player.  He wasn't an all american.  He wasn't even all-SWC.  But you know what?  He made that play.  And he will live forever.

and he wrote poetry
