The Spurs rookie entered the NBA with promise, but probably no one saw the improvement curve being so steep so soon

I'm not ready to buy into his three point shooting (and free throw) stroke being fixed despite the recent uptick, but there is no doubt the kid can play. There's really nothing he can't do on a basketball court. They even have him running point and he's actually pretty good at it. He's such a high IQ player. As good as he is playing with a bunch of scrubs, I can't imagine how well he would fit next to a real star who can tilt the floor in his favor. Well, actually I can imagine it pretty easily -- filling all the gaps next to a 7'3" Frenchman.

Oh I'm definitely buying into the FT improvement. I don't know if he's a 75% FT shooter but he's better than 48%.

Agree on the 3P stroke. We'll see.

Tank update: Shit is tightening up for the race to the bottom. Rockets have won two in a row. Spurs are now only 1 game out in the win column from both them and Detroit for worst record in the league. Orlando has seemingly played their way out of the bottom 4 but Charlotte is still looming. The rodeo trip couldn't come at a better time.

PICK    TEAM    RECORD    WIN%    GB    STREAK    L10    TOP 4    #1 OVR
1     Detroit 13-39    .250    --    Lost 2    2-8    52.1%    14.0%
2     Houston 13-38    .255    0.5    Won 2    3-7    52.1%    14.0%
3     San Antonio 14-38    .269    1.0    Lost 7    1-9    52.1%    14.0%
4      Charlotte      15-37    .288    2.0    Lost 1    4-6    48.1%    12.5%

Blockbuster.

No downside to this. Spurs send out a little cash to Miami for the SRP and they are still below the salary floor even after paying Dedmon. So, it costs them nothing in real dollars or on the cap. Essentially, they bought an unprotected SRP for $110,000. It helps Miami open up a roster spot and clear a little salary for now. Maybe that pick is worth a shit down the line or maybe they include it in another deal somewhere.

Of course, if they were to make another move and take on more salary that moves them above the floor, they will actually have to come out of pocket for the $1.67 million on Dedmon's salary. I don't know that paying that much for a second rounder is worth it, but I kinda feel like they made this move knowing that they aren't going to be doing more and absorbing another contract. And that would be very disappointing. Poeltl, Richardson, and McDermott (and Collins, too) can all help a playoff team.

I can definitely live with those protections and it's better to unload Jak now then have to overpay him this offseason.

Toronto is in a weird place right now as a franchise. That pick could definitely convey and still be in a very good spot. I'm not sure why they made the move, tbh. I guess they want to move up this season and also re-sign Poeltl long term and they want his Bird rights? They are over the cap for next year but can clear a ton out after 2024 including VanVleet, Siakam and Gary Trent Jr. Not sure why they would want Jak on their books if they do end up fully hitting the reboot button. Lots of half measures going on here.

Overall, good trade for the Spurs. I like them also now having a second round pick for this year that should be pretty decent. Maybe they package it and to move up into the first round if some team wants avoid the guaranteed salary of a first rounder?

Richardson gone too.

Four more second round picks!?!?!? There may be a draft soon where the entire second round is just the Spurs and Thunder taking turns.

They really need to start calling these picks “pick options” or something. Some of these picks are so highly protected that they will never convey. Btw, NBA teams can fractionalize picks. Theoretically one pick could be split in to 30 options and traded to 29 other teams.

None of the 2nd rounders we picked up this window are protected.

Wright is trying to catch up to Presti.

That first from Charlotte is not going to convey this year obviously. It's protected 2024- 1-14, 2025- 1-14, and then turns into 2 future 2's. There's a better than zero chance that the Spurs end up with those second round picks as long as MJ is at the helm. I guess Charlotte could always re-sign Miles Bridges so hey... let's all root for the successful return of a domestic abuser to increase the Spurs chances at getting another FRP.

Beyond that... they still need to be converting cap space into picks. They can't hold Presti's jock when it comes to that. It was a big swing and a miss this season, but it seems like all the contenders have spent all of their assets. They did well to get what they got for Poeltl. Hopefully they get some work done around the draft. They should have two pretty juicy second round picks, so maybe they package them together and perhaps take on some salary to move up into the first round. Certainly there's a contending team that doesn't want that first round pick on their cap.

Also, I don't know if I'm the only one still tuning into the games, but I have a few hot sports opinions about the roster:
1. Sochan is going to be a fun player to watch in this league. I don't know that his three point shot is fixable. He needs to live in the gym this off season. I'm so glad that Chip Engelland is still there to fix his springer. Oh wait, nevermind.
2. Malaki Branham has made some serious strides this season and has looked pretty good the past couple of weeks. He was a nice pick at 20. Solid player. Smooth bucket getter.
3. I haven't seen enough of Wesley to form a solid opinion, but for what he lacks in experience, he at least tries to make up for in effort. I hope he stays healthy for the rest of the season. It's huge for his development and I'd like to see what they've got there.
3. After three games, I already can't stand Devonte Graham. But he is the absolute perfect player for the Spurs right now - a complete no conscience, irrationally confident, high usage chucker. He's going to put up some crazy inefficient numbers in this offense, and hopefully they will be able to dump him off on some dumb ass GM in a year or so for a first round pick like Charlotte did. I'm also fearful that at some point the law of averages is going to catch up with him and he's going to get hot at crunch time and accidentally win a game.

Speaking of winning... this team is on a tear. Two wins out of their last 23 games. Thirteen L's in a row, sitting snugly in the #2 hole, one win behind Houston and one win ahead of Detroit. Massive game against Charlotte tomorrow. We can go up three full games on them with a loss and it might pretty well ensure a top 3 lottery seed, which is what we need to have the highest odds at #1. I'm not sure the Spurs win 3 more games the rest of the season. There's a huge back to back against Houston 3/4 and 3/5 that could very well be for all of the marbles. After that, there is one game against Orlando but everybody else on the schedule should be jockeying for the playoffs or play-in. Lots of meat left on the bone.

Tank Spurs Tank!

He should be a serviceable low 30s guy like Draymond. He's. 341 since the new year shooting almost 3 times a game.

I mean I don't think he's ever going to hit 200 3s in a season but I'm not sure teams will be able to just not guard him out there.

Not sure if anybody else is still paying any sort of attention but there are two newsworthy items:

Rookie signed to a two-way after being waived by Philly. Long, not particularly athletic wing who can shoot it. Supposed to be a good character guy. Why not take a looksy and see if there is anything there?

And....most importantly:

There's a whole lot to unpack here. First off, calling Bryn Forbes an NBA "star" is by any objective measure, a stretch. My man is currently unemployed. And while we should never support or look for any silver linings from domestic abuse, this event should preclude his chucking, no defense playing ass from ever returning to the Spurs. Which was probably, somewhere, still on the table. It may be a good time for Brent to explore his overseas options.

Beyond that, I was unfamiliar with the artist known as Elsa Jean before today. After doing a quick bit of "research," it's clear that she is a very talented young lady that Bryn was lucky to have a relationship with.  Has there ever been a bigger underdog story than Bryn Forbes? This no talent motherfucker has been leading his best possible life. From undrafted free agent to pocketing more than $15 million in earnings before turning 30, owning a championship ring, and being with a remarkably hot porn star. As much as I hate the dude... you've got to give him his due. He would be an inspiration if not for this latest blight. Unbelievable.

He and Kliff Kingsbury should start a life coaching service, The Art and Science of Failing Upward.

The job that this SA team is doing in the tanking race is completely and totally spectacular and breathtaking. Didn’t y’all open up the heat like 10-6 or something like that?

As a rockets fan hoping for the worst record in the league I can’t believe that will happen, y’all will go lower I can almost guarantee. After all those years with Yao and the like always finishing behind y’all in the division and never getting over the hump now that we are both whipping it out to be as terrible as possible y’all are going to again beat us at what we want to accomplish. Damn you spurs. Just an amazing tank.

They started 5-2. They're 9-44 since then. It's been amazing to watch. I don't think they win 3 more games the rest of the season. That home and home between the Rockets and the Spurs coming up is going to be for all the marbles. I won't lie to you. I like the Spurs chances. They have so much momentum. I'm not sure how you stop it.

Beyond just how terrible their record is, they are posting the worst defensive rating in the history of the NBA and that was almost entirely before they traded the only guy (Poeltl) on the roster who was any sort of a shot blocking presence. Granted, part of that defensive rating is because of today's NBA - this year's Pistons are #2 all time, your Rockets are #3, Portland is #5, Utah, Charlotte and Indiana are #9-#11. So 7 of the worst 11 team defensive ratings in NBA history have been put up this year. But the Spurs are a full 2 points worse than any team in NBA history. The other numbers are just as horrifying. They have a -10.11 SRS, worst in the league by more than 2 points over the next worst team (Houston; -8.05).  Off Rtg: 110.4 (28th of 30) Def Rtg: 120.7 (30th of 30) Net Rtg: -10.2 (30th of 30). Just an all time terrible team.

I won't say the season has been a total loss, though. Sochan has proven to be a really solid pick at 10. Malaki Branham was a steal at 20. He's been averaging about 19 ppg in February. And even Blake Wesley has shown some flashes since he's come back from injury including him making Luka look stupid last night in a 26 point loss.

Thanks for the reply. This is kind of what I was hoping for in making the post- a little insight into just how bad they have been and sort of why.
yeah- I don’t think the Rockets have any chance of staying behind the spurs. I’m pretty sure they are going to fuck up and win 4 out of 10 somewhere along the line and power right on through. I sort of feel like y’all might go 2-20 or something to send the season on a 2-35 heater or something.

The worst 3 records get the same lotto odds. You just need to finish in the bottom 3.

Yeah but the worst record means no worse than picking 5th. You could end up 6th or 7th if you end up bottom 3 and things go bad. So- I would still much rather be worst than 3rd worst.

I mean - no offense - but...

The difference between 1 and 2 and 3 is fucking massive. 5 and 6-7? Meh. Similar prospect tier at that point.

This dude is going to be a menace. I don't think you can NOT draft Wemby 1st but guys that big don't have a great track record of having long and productive careers in the NBA.
