Texas Recruiting Notes 2026: They Can't Keep Getting Away With This

Several nice quotes in this article, from 'ol Chasedahbag.

This one made me chuckle.

"We talked about how the school is and how much he wants me there," Calicut said of his conversation with Joseph. "He said I fit in their scheme and that I fit in like Michael Taaffe. He said I play similar to Michael Taaffe. That felt good to hear too, because that's a good player. Who doesn't want to play like Michael Taaffe?"

And this sounds good ...

"Oh yeah Texas for sure," Calicut said of his current standouts. "Texas has been one of my dream schools since I was a little kid. Forever been a Longhorns fan. I played for a little league team called the Longhorns so Texas has been standing out. Of course Oregon stands out. Michigan, LSU, think those standout but I think Texas is leading the race for sure."

Texas 'leading the race' for newly offered North Shore Top247 defensive back Chace Calicut

Jordan Scruggs (Horns 247)

Galena Park North Shore 2026 Top247 defensive back Chace Calicut is one of the top prospects in the Lone Star State.

Ranked by 247Sports as the No. 203 overall prospect in the nation, the No. 15 safety in the nation, and the No. 31 overall prospect in the state of Texas, Calicut currently holds 23 offers including scholarships from programs like LSU, Michigan, Ole Miss, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, and Texas A&M amongst 16 others.

Calicut is the next highly coveted defensive back to wear the North Shore Mustangs uniform, as he's next in line at the prospect factory in East Houston that's produced 15 FBS defensive back prospects in the last 10 recruiting cycles: 2025 5-star CB Devin Sanchez (Ohio State), 2025 3-star S Nigel Pringle (Arkansas), 2024 3-star S LaVonte Johnson (highest rated HS signee to ever sign with Rice), 2024 3-star CB Khamani Hudson (Cal), 2023 3-star CB Jacoby Davis (Kansas), 2023 3-star S Jayven Anderson (UNT), 2023 3-star S Evan Jackson (UNT), 2022 4-star CB Denver Harris (Texas A&M, LSU, UTSA, UNLV), 2022 3-star S Caleb Flagg (HCU, Missouri), 2020 3-star CB Upton Stout (UNT, WKU), 2019 3-star CB Kee'yon Stewart (TCU, Arkansas), 2019 3-star S Dorian Hewett (USC), 2019 3-star CB Ajani Carter (Utah State, Baylor, Houston), 2018 3-star CB Kieston Roach (Texas State), and 2016 4-star S Eric Monroe (LSU, Texas Tech).

"It honestly feels good. I worked hard for it," Calicut said of being the next highly touted defensive back prospect to come through North Shore. "Our coaches remind me everyday it's not given, I gotta go get it but it feels good."

With the Mustangs set to lose their 2025 class that includes five-star cornerback Devin Sanchez (Ohio State), Top247 linebacker Charles Ross (LSU), three-star safety Nigel Pringle (Arkansas), and four year QB starter Kaleb Bailey (Murray State) to graduation amongst several other veteran players, Calicut knows he'll have to step up as one of North Shore's senior leaders this upcoming season.

"Bringing my team together," Calicut said of his offseason focus. "We obviously lost a couple of key pieces and pretty much the whole defense will be brand new. So just carrying the guys up, bringing the guys up, making sure they're alright before getting ready for another state run."

Less than a year ago Calicut held just one early offer from Purdue. In the time since, he's blown up into a national prospect holding 23 offers with more scholarships set to come his way. Although the journey is far from finished, Calicut is grateful for his recruiting rise and how far he's come.

"It's been really cool. Everything has been falling in line like how I wanted. It was god's plan, godspeed, and I've been really thankful and really grateful for it all too."

Speaking of recruiting rise, Calicut picked up his most recent offer on Thursday from the Texas Longhorns when cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph swung by the school to offer the Houston native in person.

Calicut has had a bit of an unorthodox recruitment thus far. He played freshman ball his first year in high school before making the varsity squad as a sophomore. The thing is, he didn't get much of any tape at defensive back as a sophomore because of the loaded defensive backfield in front of him that included several FBS prospects and a few really good high school players. So instead he played primarily special teams while wearing No. 33 in 2023.

He picked up his first offer from Purdue in January of this past year, but every other school either didn't know he existed or wanted to wait till Calicut had more game film as a junior. Calicut signed up to play 7on7 for a local Houston area program where he played in several tournaments early in the spring where he stood for his skills and his ability to move as a 6-foot-3, 190 pounder. The large majority of the media that discovered him and eventually posted him on twitter from these 7on7 tournaments was blown away that barely anyone knew he existed even as a North Shore defensive back prospect, but once the twitter posts were made more and more schools started reaching out about Calicut.

Once spring ball started and Calicut earned his long awaited starting secondary spot, the offers started to flood in as programs made their way to North Shore to catch the Mustangs during the evaluation period. He ended up picking up 11 total offers in about a month in half just off of spring ball, and the rest would be history.

The Houston native picked up a few more offers that summer on camps and visits, but once Calicut got into his junior season and had more tape available for programs to see, he began collecting even more offers as schools that decided to hold out finally got to see what they had held out for — film. Texas was included amongst this group of schools.

"Coach Jimmy (Jongebloed), he always hit me up before the season and during the season I went down there for the UTSA game. I was gonna go back for the Georgia game but I had something going on. They always chopped it up with me they just told me they were waiting for the film to drop and they told me be patient. And that's what it was."

Calicut enjoyed his first visit to Texas, even though he arrived and left without an offer from the Longhorns.

"It was really nice. They treated me like I was a commit which was really cool. Most schools, they don't do that. It was really nice down there and my parents loved it and it was a nice place that I would call home."

The 6-foot-3, 190 pounder watched several Longhorns games besides the attended home game against UTSA.

"I watched the Georgia ones. I watched the recent one when they played Ohio State. I watched most of them I feel like. If I wasn't doing anything I was watching their game if they were playing."

Calicut mentioned Terry Joseph and Blake Gideon's elite group of defensive backs as the main eye catcher when watching the Horns.

"I love their DBs. They fly around, hit, and when they turn up they turn up the whole team. I love their DBs and how they play, I feel like they play like me."

Up next for Calicut will be visits to see Oregon on Friday, Texas on Saturday, and Michigan the following week before wrapping up the month of January. Having only been on the Texas campus once in the past for the UTSA game, he's looking forward to getting a better feel for the program while also catching up with some former 7on7 teammates who now play for the Longhorns.

"I just want to see how it really works. Because when I was there it was gameday and everybody was outside so I want to see how it is on a regular day. And then my guys are down there, Caleb Chester and Jaime Ffrench. I know all them boys and they're my guys so it should be cool and I look forward to getting down there and seeing the campus again."

At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds Calicut has the athleticism and length to play any position in the secondary and he's moved around a bit in the defensive backfield at the high school level as well. Because of this, every school in the recruitment is pursuing Calicut at defensive back and not a specific corner or safety position.

"They've all said the same thing. Like 'we want you here, it doesn't matter at what' or 'we're gonna play you wherever you fit at in our scheme whether corner or safety'. They want me at both positions and said they think of it as a plus because I can do both."

As far as the current standouts go, the Longhorns are already in a phenomenal spot after offering Calicut less than a week ago.

Although it's several months away, the North Shore product already has a pretty good idea of what he wants his recruitment timeline to look like.

"I'll probably commit in July. Or sometime this summer when I'm done with my official visits."

At 6-foot-3, 190 pounds Calicut is ranked as the No. 203 overall prospect in the nation, the No. 15 safety in the nation, and the No. 31 overall prospect in the state of Texas according to 247Sports.

Maybe they're like the Uiagalelei brothers, where the older brother is an overrated dipshit QB that will sink your team, and the younger brother is a talented lineman?

Gerry updating some 2026 recruiting info:

Spoiler

Two new 2026 offers ...

Texas extended and offer to OnTexasFootball 4-star+ safety Donovan Webb (Frisco, Texas/Panther Creek) Tuesday ahead of Junior Day this weekend. Webb, 6-foot and 175-pounds, also picked offers from LSU, Arizona and Colorado State Tuesday. That adds to an offer list that includes Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Kansas State (where his dad played baseball), SMU and Arkansas. OTF believes Texas is at the top of his list headed into Junior Day and spring visits.

Webb is teammates with 4-star++ cornerback/ATH and Texas lean Jalen Lott (Frisco, Texas/Panther Creek).

Johnny Nansen also extended an offer to 2026 4-star+ linebacker and Oregon commit Tristan Phillips(Ventura, Calif./High). Phillips, 6-foot-3 and 215-pounds, told OnTexasFootball that he plans to get out to take a look at Texas this spring.

It’s not like the loss of @Machinator to this board, but it’s a bigger loss than Carl. I did not have Burnt Orange & White getting murdered by his wife on my bingo card for 2025. RIP, you mildly interesting and highly voluminous dipshit.

Wait, what?

The little guy hasn't done anything on this site in almost two weeks. I just assume that the wife got tired of his angry incel behavior and beat him with a tire iron until he stopped breathing.

I think he got fatwa’d for shit-talking Quinn after the last game. He was a decent contributor on the HS football thread but he probably got tired of me dogwalking him with my superior knowledge on the south texas teams. Dumbass is going to miss out on my RGV preseason rankings in August.

I looked it up. The guy has over 43,000 rep points. It would be really hard to crowdsource you, with less than a 4th of his rep points. Doing so to him would be nearly impossible and would take more idiots than you could assemble to make that happen.

If you weren't expecting this, you clearly have not been paying attention. I'm on my way to Lake Charles today to cash my BO&W murdered by his wife for telling her to take the trash out in the snow ticket.

Ha, now that you mention it, I guess I have noticed less "ignored post" notifications littered throughout every recruiting and football board thread.

Everyone is going to make their push for Lattimore. There’s apparently been some thought that Osborne and the scatback whose initialed name and high school I never remember would be a pretty excellent 2026 class.

If they get a public commitment from Osborne soon, I will take that as a sign that they’re not likely to play the long game to land Lattimore and that extra NIL commitment will be used elsewhere.

That said, it’s worth considering that Lattimore is allegedly an easy #1 on their board. Will be a fun comparison to watch over the years. Sort of like Gibson versus Tatum for the 2024 class. Talent acquisition is never not interesting to me.

Expand

To add to this, South at 247 already has a Texas pick put in for Lattimore.

Is there a Lattimore RB I'm just missing, or is it Amari Latimer y'all are referring to?

I think all the 9.95 sites have mentioned at this point that they don't feel the 2026 in-state class is as strong as some previous classes. Should make for an interesting cycle with our willingness to go out of state.

Seems like OL and DB should be able to be filled with largely in-state guys if we choose. DT and LB seem like they will involve some big boy out of state battles if we want to hit our needed numbers (3-4 at DT I'm assuming and hopefully 3 at LB).

Man, Latimer does not look elite at all. I'd much rather take two of the in-state guys over him.

He's a big back at 5-11, 209. He outruns most of his HS opponents, but he does not have the speed of Osbourne at 5-10, 195, or at least, I couldn't find a faster time for Amari. Amari is ranked 18th and Osbourne 5th in the 247 Composite RBs list, but the coaches have their own evaluations they go by and I could see him being valued for inside zone.

Latimer strikes me as a slightly smaller, slower D'onta Foreman. Can't find a 40 time. Not a ton of wiggle, but a tackle shedder and strong north-south runner. Also has pretty good hands. Overall, looks like a solid red zone guy who's also big enough for effective pass pro. I'd call that a clear take in a multi-RB class.

We just had a season where we didn’t have a legitimate between the tackles back and some of you are saying you want to take two guys from Texas that aren’t between the tackles back? Latimer plus one of the Texas backs would be a hell of a 1-2 class.

Per a friend that usually knows this stuff better than most, it is highly unlikely that Osborne and Latimer would sign with the same team.

I couldn't find a 40 time for Latimer either.  Found a 11.78 100m on Athletic.net

Osborne has an 11.05 100m on Athletic.net. On his hudl, he shows a 10.76 100m and a 4.45 40 time. But what's the source for those times? If you plug the 100 times into a calculator, that 40 time does mesh though.

If using their athletic.net times, the calculator yields:

11.78 -> 4.9

11.05 -> 4.6

Osborne's Hudl

10.76 -> 4.49

100m times make no fucking difference if you need a perfectly blocked play to show it off. We need a guy who can get us the dirty yards and stay healthy/hold on to the ball while doing it.
Like Kelel Mullins did for UM this year.

We had Gibson. what the fuck is he if not a between the tackles back? Baxter is much the same. We don’t need anymore backs with mediocre speed and nothing elite.

No one is saying the 100 or 40 time is the only factor to consider and I certainly pointed out Amari's potential for running inside zone. But it's still nice to know what you're getting speed-wise and for another data point of comparison.
