The Texas Longhorns have offered what I believe may be the No. 1 ranked  RB in the 2026 class.

Derrek Cooper, 6-0 and 195’ish, Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna

https://247sports.com/player/derrek-cooper-46147129/

Interesting that 247 lists him as a safety. Mack Brown running the show over there now?

To be fair though, his player rating/national ranking falls under the ATH designation.

He looks like a great between the tackles RB.

Derrek Cooper - Junior Season Highlights - HUDL

247sports - H.S. Scouting Report:

Quote

Jack of all trades that some schools view as a back-seven defender at the next level while others think he’s a running back long term. Owns a favorable athletic profile for a mid-skill with green speed and explosiones scores. Displays advanced IQ on the defensive side of the ball as he’s quick to read and react. Will charge downhill with authority and has proven to be a solid open-field tackler. As a ball carrier, runs with impressive tempo as he mixes together agility and physicaility. Can also elevate a passing attack with his hands and route running. One of the more unique evaluations in the class given the position ambiguity coming out of his junior campaign, but should be viewed as one of the top overall prospects in the Sunshine State given how he can impact games in a variety of different ways.

Multi-sport athlete that also competes in track & field events.
State qualifier as a sophomore in the 100, 200 and LJ.
————
2024: Transferred into Chaminade-Madonna Prep ahead of junior season where he played on both sides of the ball.
2023: Two-way player as a sophomore at Cardinal Gibbons getting snaps at SAF, LB and RB. Totaled 49 tackles and 4 INT per MaxPreps.

Words cannot describe how annoying I find that "JSerra" nomenclature as the official name of the school

Explain its origin so I can be thoroughly annoyed as well. Sounds like something I can quickly and easily get on board with.

Katoanga is an intriguing defensive line prospect with a very high ceiling. He played primarily as an edge rusher as a sophomore but has the frame to bulk up and move inside at the college level. He’s all of 6-5, 250 pounds with an 80” wingspan and we can see him packing on another 40 pounds or so with ease and not losing any of his natural athleticism. He’s a high motor player who’s relentless pursuing the football. He shows some pass rush ability coming off the edge or as a tackle and is physical in run support. He can take on blocks, hold his ground and still get a push up the field. Right now, he has shown more potential than on-field production but the traits are there and he looks set to have a breakout junior season in the fall.

Does this mean that the report was from before last season when he was only a sophomore? So as a sophomore he was more potential than production?

Turning the excellent name of Junipero Serra High School into the meaningless word salad of "JSerra," not even as a nickname but as the official name

Well, you knocked a six-man class down to five, and replaced two of the lowest ranked guys with a five star. Really going out on a limb there.

I get your point, but I'm pretty sure he is just a four star and rated as an IOL. Nonetheless, I just wanted to get it out there because those are the guys that I think we have a shot at and that I think will be most successful.

Listen, asshole, you can't get this kind of prescient Oline insight without spending a lot of time talking to former Oline players from the 80's. You cant just look up some wide published rankings and, do some math.

Jordan Scruggs (Horns 247) wrote this about Heze Kent, earlier this month.

"Another name to know is Heze Kent, a 6-foot-5, 300 pound freak-show athlete from southeast Georgia. Rarely do those types of prospects end up leaving Georgia or the southeast for their collegiate careers, but could Texas strike back-to-back years after pulling Justus Terry out of Georgia in a similar scenario? Kent projects as an offensive tackle prospect, but he plays tight end at the high school level and is being recruited at both offensive tackle and tight end depending on the school. Kent also comes from a stellar basketball background and in 2024 led the entire state of Georgia 5A classification in rebounds. I'm not sure what position Texas likes Kent at, but he's one of those athletes you just get in the building and figure out later. I mean the dude is 6-foot-5 and had 983 receiving yards on 24 YPC and 211 rushing yards on 6.6 YPC in just 12 games as a junior in a season where he played around 315 pounds. Through 16 basketball games as a junior this winter, Kent is averaging over 16 points per game, over 14 rebounds per game, and is averaging at least one assist, steal, and block per game as well. The freak-show prospect visited Texas for the Kentucky game on Nov. 23 after first picking up an offer from the Longhorns in April. Earlier in the fall Kent released a top seven of Ohio State, Miami, Florida, Kentucky, Georgia, USC, and Texas, and the Longhorns will have a dogfight on their hands in Kent's recruitment. (SCRUGGS)"

(Also added this later.)

"Other thoughts: The more and more I think about it, Heze Kent might be athletic enough to play a tight end role in college that's similar to what Darnell Washington played at Georgia as a tight end that's effectively a sixth offensive lineman on the field but that can also run enough of the route tree well enough. Washington is two inches taller and weighed about 50 pounds less than Kent currently does, but you should be able to see the vision with the comp."

Having watched Carlton play against Round Rock in early September, I'd be surprised if there are many in the nation who are better than he is. He was all over the field.  Must have had at least 12 tackles.

Was that ever really a thing?

I could see it being a thing in the 90s when we were putting a mediocre product on the field and the THS coaches had players that were better than the ones we were trotting out there.

Of course, all the real Texas talent was going to Florida schools or atm at that time.

This was definitely a thing with Mack, from 2002-2012 Texas signed a total of 15 OOS recruits and most of them had ties to Texas or went out of their way to be recruited by Texas.

The 2005 national championship team had 2 non Texans on the entire roster, Studdard and Sendlein who were legacies. Texas averaged well over 90% of scholarship players being from Texas throughout Mack’s career.
