Texas Recruiting Notes 2026: They Can't Keep Getting Away With This

Gerry is at least modest enough to get this, which is why he’s usually skeptical about high school lineman making it as college tackles, regardless of bonafides.

The fun part is that Gerry hasn’t backed down, hedged, or equivocated one bit on Turntine. Lines have been drawn.

I don't have an opinion one way or another.  Flood and Sark have hit it out of the park with their OL evaluations over the years and have had success with reshaping their bodies whether it's losing weight like Cam or gaining weight like Goosby.   Judging by how many schools that want him and his worth ethic, this kid will probably maximize his talent.   Also, for the better part of 20 years, Gerry has basically said everyone is a guard.  I find it mildly amusing that he gets so heated about the people in the industry that keep ranking Turntine as a guard.

If folks are right about Bowman, he would be an extremely timely get.  The tight end room is really good and has been.  A “generational” tight end that wins repeatedly in the middle of the field would be an amazing gift for any new starting QB in a couple years (Lacey, Bell or otherwise)

Destrehan (La.) Top247 wide receiver Jabari Mack is just a matter of days into his commitment to LSU, but that hasn't stopped Texas from continuing their pursuit.

In addition to an official visit to see the Longhorns, which is still scheduled for June 13, Mack tells Horns247 that he'll be on the Forty Acres twice during the next month.

On both April 5 and April 26, Mack will return to Texas to see the team during their spring practice window and speak further with Chris Jackson and others on staff as they attempt to flip his commitment.

When he was last on campus for Junior Day in January, Mack spoke with 247Sports about his connection to the Longhorns and why he could see himself playing in the Lone Star State.

"I like their passing game," he said. "They have a pro-style playbook. That's just going to get me better for the next level."

Apart from Mack, Texas has scheduled official visits with five wide receivers. He, Longhorns' commit Chris Stewart, Mater Dei product Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, and Texas A&M commit Aaron Gregory are all set to be in Austin on June 13, while Texas legacy Kaydon Finley will be on campus on June 20.

Additionally, Clemson commit Naeem Burroughs set his Texas official visit for the 20th, but Horns247 does not expect him to break Dabo Swinney's 'no-visit policy'. However, DeSoto's Ethan Feaster has expressed interest in returning to Texas this summer, but is yet to set a date.

Jabari Mack ranks as the nation's No. 129 prospect, No. 15 among wide receivers, and No. 6 among players from the state of Louisiana.

Because it would make sense to move him to land Turntine and Ojo. I'm not sure Rosenborough is a tackle long-term. That would give us a spot for both Turntine and Ojo to fill out the T class.

I am not sure why you say that other than he is not 6'6". This kid can move. If he gets to 315 and keeps that athleticism, there is no reason he can not play Tackle. He may get the same NFL draft treatment as Kelvin Banks due to his height, but that does not concern me about being a potential high end tackle in college.

I tend to trust Gerry intrinsically with all of this. I don’t think there’s anyone better on the evaluation end and he puts in the work with the families, agents and staffs. He seems to remain confident in Texas landing Turntine at LT. Just seems like Texas and Turntine aren’t as resolute as he is in terms of that ultimately happening. Still early, though.

I'm not sure how their measurables (specifically the lengths- height, wingspan, arm length, hand size) compare, but Turntine's hudl reminds me of Donovan Jackson's. Jackson could have played tackle at a lot of high end schools (and he eventually did fill in there OSU due to injuries), but was a guard level for the highest end programs. Of course, Turntine is playing against better comp, doesn't have senior stuff out yet, and might just be longer than Jackson, so maybe this ends up being a bad comp on my end.

I think more than any other position, OL evals are incomplete from just watching highlights and reading height/weight. You need all kinds of background info, including measurables, injuries, football character intel, full game tapes, etc

Totally agree. So much projection involved at OL. Can they remain athletic and put on the 30+ pounds or in Brian ONeill's case almost 70 pounds (Pro Bowl LT from Minn out of Pitt). Will they grow into that massive frame. Etc

There is nothing more annoying in the recruiting chat than the "he is a guard, not a tackle" comments. Texas has had a pretty solid run at LT with Connor Williams, Sam Cosmi, and Banks. Williams and Cosmi were great in college and end up being kicked inside in the NFL. There is talk that the same will happen to Banks. Despite the evidence in front of Texas fans eyes, they will pretend that an NFL guard cannot play Tackle in college.

Midweek Recruiting Nuggets | OTF

Nuggest on the Recruiting Trail

***

Portal

Texas is hosting Stanford EDGE David Bailey on campus currently. Bailey was previously at Texas Tech this weekend and could potentially end up at UCLA for a visit closer to home as well.

But where else could Texas go in the portal? An obvious answer is wide receiver, as the Longhorns are currently practicing with a group of receivers who have yet to catch a single pass in their career. While talented, experience is needed.

One addition at wide receiver is expected, but a source indicated depending on what the scholarship count of the WR room looks like during the spring portal might actually dictate if they add a second playmaker should the right fit become available. Right now a TBD.

2027 San Antonio OT Recaps Texas UOV

There is a big time 2027 offensive lineman in the 210 these days. San Antonio Roosevelt OT Kaeden Scott was on campus last week for the Longhorn City Limits recruiting event.

At 6-foot-6 and some change, Scott was one of the more impressive prospects from a physical standpoint that we saw this weekend. According to Scott after the trip, the visit went very well for the Horns and Kyle Flood.

"It is going to get me to where I need to go if I choose to go here," Scott told OTF. "In the spring practice, I saw the type of energy that (Flood) feeds into his dudes."

Scott said he weighed in at 292 pounds on the visit. He will visit Texas A&M on April 12.

Texas offered back in October of 2024. The proximity to home is going to be a key factor here as well. Scott mentioned that he wanted to make sure his parents could visit and see games on a given weekend. Texas is off to a very solid start here for what will be one of the class of 2027's best.

Secondary Recruiting

Before departing for the New Orleans Saints, Terry Joseph was promoted and given the pass game coordinator position with the Longhorn defense. Meaning, he was likely to be given the reigns for the entire secondary and its play calls.

Since moving on and the addition of Duane Akina back to the 40 Acres, I have been told that is very likely a role he adopts.

As a result, Mark Orphey will continue to teach technique at the cornerback spot, but will have an overwhelming influence in recruiting at both positions, as well as Keynodo Hudson. The early returns back on Orphey have been very positive, including his energy on the trail.

Texas A&M Making a Move for 2026 DL

Texas A&M added two commitments the final week of March to their class that now stands nine deep. The name I was told to watch for the Aggies included 2026 Buford (Ga.) High DL Bryce Perry-Wright.

Perry-Wright is expected to officially visit Texas on June 13.

I had forgotten about that post. Seeing Turntine he looks like he needs 3 years to add mass to hold up in conference. I'm sure he's good, but Rosenborogh definitely can play tackle. My personal preference would be Ojo and Rosenborogh, but I'll take Turntine if that's what the staff wants. I guess it's a win-win.

This seems mildly surprising, no? I guess OL spots are filling up and some tough decisions will have to be made.

could've swore that Gerry not too long ago put that we were sitting in a good spot with him on a write up within the last week or so..
