Texas Recruiting Notes 2026: They Can't Keep Getting Away With This

I’d have to double-check but I’m almost positive there has never been a kid who only weighed 265 his junior year of high school that played offensive line in D1.  P5 for sure.

Lmao. Sam Cosmi was a recent example of exactly that, even in his senior year. Connor Williams may have played around there his junior year as well. But, I know you’re trolling.

Still looks like First Chair Cello to me.

When he gets mad, he storms up to his room and plays along to this to piss his parents off.

Love that Sark has the game ball from our 57-7 beat-down of Tech in his office. (I assume that's his office?)  Wonder if it's changed much since Mack's time.

Well, it’s certainly changed location since the current head coaches office is in the Sourh Endzone.

Ok, I’ll bite.

What’s the Orgeron connection? I saw the tweet yesterday showing his arrival. Now this kid with the photo and tag.

He's in town for coaching convention that we put on. Him and Sark coached together I think at prior stops.

Nuggets on the Recruiting Visitors from Saturday's Practice

***

OT John Turntine – Crowley (Texas) North Crowley

Turntine was all smiles leaving the facility Saturday afternoon. The five-star prospect has been to Texas plenty of times and spoke about the familiarity of the program and relationship with Kyle Flood. Turntine also mentioned seeing Nick Brooks going out and competing for playing time immediately as an early enrollee as a positive takeaway.

The big movement with Turntine is he essentially named a top three of Michigan, Texas A&M and the Longhorns.

LB Xavier Griffin – Gainesville (Ga.) High – USC Commit

The five-star USC commit arrived in Austin on Friday and was able to experience a full two-day visit with Johnny Nansen and the rest of the Texas staff. One nugget I can share is Griffin and LaAllen Clark posed for a picture outside of Moncrief following his trip in which he threw up the USC Victory 'V' handsign which Clark had a humorous reaction to, saying he wasn't going to let that fly at Texas. Still, a positive note for Texas that he was able to see the campus for two full days.

DB Yaheim Riley – Austin (Texas) Anderson HS

The first offer of nickels coach Keynodo Hudson arrived on campus quietly, but departed with a full escort by the Texas defensive backs coaching staff. Mark Orphey, Keynodo Hudson and Duane Akina each walked Riley out of the door to his car to conclude his trip. Since then, Riley has re-opened his recruitment after previously being committed to Houston since December. Texas should be considered the heavy favorite at the moment.

LB Kosi Okpala – Houston (Texas) Mayde Creek

Two visits in three weeks. Should speak for itself. However, Okpala mentioned Penn State is still a school he wants to get out and see, as well as Alabama. Okpala said he wants to make a decision in July after his official visits, but it should be noted that the Longhorns are in a terrific spot for the star linebacker.

EDGE Dre Quinn – Norcross (Ga.) Greater Atlanta Christian School HS

The 6-foot-4-inch edge rusher arrived in Austin with five official visits on the June schedule, and left with six. Quinn will be back in Austin for an official visit the weekend of June 13-15 he told OnTexasFootball after the visit. Our @Gerry Hamilton added a nugget this morning on Quinn as well, there is a likely chance Texas is heavily considered before any decision is made.

CB Hayward Howard Jr. – New Orleans (La.) Edna Karr HS

Howard stuck around in Austin Saturday night before heading back to New Orleans Sunday. The Longhorns got the sign of approval from the family on the trip as well. LSU offered within the last week and you know how difficult it is to win out for prospects from New Orleans if LSU is heavily involved. But nonetheless, Texas is going to be in the thick of things for the 6-2 cornerback. Really strong weekend here. Howard will be back June 5–7 for an OV.

CB Samari Matthews – Cornelius (NC) Hough HS

Texas CB coach Mark Orphey is making a very strong run at Matthews who is sticking around until Monday in Austin. Matthews told OTF after the trip he and his family were going to check out the city with dinner and some shopping in what is shaping up to be a mock-OV in a way. Matthews said he was able to chop it up with Dia Bell and Chace Calicut on the trip after playing some 7v7 against the two earlier this spring.

EDGE Jamarion Carlton – Temple (Texas) High

Carlton was not present for the practice portion of the visit weekend and even joked afterwards that Steve Sarkisian told him he was worried he was not going to make it in. However, he did get in to Austin and was able to meet with Sarkisian and LaAllen Clark in person. Still, no official visit set for the Horns for the Temple edge rusher.

DB Chace Calicut – Houston (Texas) North Shore HS

A return to Austin left with the positive remarks for the Horns from Calicut. Right now, Texas and Michigan are leading way in this one. Washington also has an official visit set currently. Calicut told OTF he had a strong relationship with Duane Akina when he was at Arizona and that the connection with Mark Orphey, a former North Shore Mustang himself, helped build on another positive trip to Austin. Texas is in a really nice spot here.

WR Mason James – Norman (Ok.) North HS

Not often do you see an elite target out of Norman visit the Texas Longhorns, yet here was James on campus for the weekend. James mentioned Daylan McCutcheon specifically as someone he was watching during the practice, as that DeAndre Moore/McCutcheon role in the offense is where he is being recruited to play. One other nugget he saw was that Texas is turning into "wide receiver university" with their recent run in the NFL Draft. James is working on an OV, either June 13 or June 20.

DL Bryce Perry-Wright – Buford (Ga.) High

A return to campus is a good sign for the Longhorns here. Texas has been in the mix for Perry-Wright for quite a while, a big positive in the recruitment for the Peach State defensive lineman as he continues his tour of visits across the country. Right now, official visits are set for Clemson, Auburn, Miami, Texas A&M and Texas (June 13). A source about a month ago indicated that Texas A&M was the team to keep a really close eye on in this one.

Monday morning recruiting notes: Turntine and more

The Texas staff hosted more than 40 prospects over the weekend, including more than 25 combined 5-stars and 4-stars in the classes of 2027 and 2028.

OnTexasFootball shares some notes picked up during the weekend, and a quick look ahead at some big time prospects that will be on campus soon.

John Turntine III ...

Let's get this out of the way, the OTF 5-star weight is fluctuating between 269-275 right now. So for those wondering if he weighs any of the falsely reported weights of 246 or 250 - you guys can stop wondering if it's true. In fact, he weighs right in the area code of Trevor Goosby when he committed to Texas. Texas is not at all worried about his weight. In fact, Turntine's wingspan came in longer than last year. He's now 82 and change, including 34 inch arms. Focus on the arm length, wingspan, 10-inch hands, ultra athleticism, tenacity and visualize what that player will look like at 305-310 by the time he hits a college field.

As far as the visit and recruiting, it went very well with the entire family in Austin for two days. Texas has at least a 50-50 shot. Texas, Texas A&M, Tennessee and Michigan are the schools to know.

Peach State chances ...

5-star LB Xavier Griffin (Gainesville, Ga./High) - Texas is expected to receive a June OV, and there is a belief that the Longhorns will be right there in the end.

4-star+ EDGE Dre Quinn (Norcross, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) - at least 50-50. June 13 OV locked in. One source believes the Longhorns will end up being the favorite.

4-star+ DL Bryce Perry-Wright (Buford, Ga./High) - The belief is that Texas has a legit shot here too ahead of the June OV's. Texas, Clemson, Texas A&M, Auburn and Miami are your June OV's.

Defensive line visitors ...

This past weekend, Damari Simeon (Richland, N.J./St. Augustine) impressed at over 6-foot-2, and 289-pounds. The Longhorns are expected to OV him in June. Tennessee, Penn State, Ohio State, Auburn and Texas A&M are teams to know right now.

Texas put on a good show for 4-star++ DL James Johnson (Miami, Fla./Northwestern). The 6-foot-2, 285-pounder is likely to shuffle his OV dates to get Texas on the list in June. Georgia, Florida and Miami are the competition. Johnson is very explosive with a 58-foot shot put to his credit this spring.

New group of defensive line visitors ...

Texas is also scheduled to host a number of talented DL's April 26 around fan day.

4-star++ Kendall Guervil (Fort Myers, Fla./High) - June 20-22 OV to Texas.

4-star+ Vodney Cleveland (Birmingham, Ala./Parker) - June 13-15 OV as well.

4-star Tico Crittendon (Lithonia, Ga./High) - June 13-15 as well.

4-star Preston Carey (Bradenton, Fla./IMG Academy) - really likes Texas.

OTF 4-star Emanuel Ruffin (Bessemer, Ala./City) - OV's currently are LSU, Florida, Tennessee and Alabama with the Crimson Tide and Gators considered top two.

They are not fucking around with OL and DL candidates this cycle. They’re bringing in a lot of guys and they look like they want to sign a lot of guys as well.

Do you think Krempin is a take right now, or just a guy they're keeping warm?

I saw his comments after the visit. He mentioned Austin at least 3 times. Said something like "the campus is not in the middle of nowhere". I took that as a very positive sign, based on his other OVs. That is good feeling is based on a teenager not changing his mind over the next 6 months, so take it with a grain of salt.

I'm ok with poaching defensive players Beamer wants.  He has an eye for talent.

I am not sure this Beamer has the same eye for talent his dad had, especially when dad had Bud Foster at his side.

South Carolina has some really good players.

always do. Just one of those school that always has a few NFL guys, usually on the defensive side.

South Carolina is top in NFL players per capita

Georgia, Louisiana, Bama, Mississippi, Florida, Utah (that surprised me), Maryland, South Carolina, Texas, and North Carolina are the top 10. If you are big school in these states, you are going to produce NFL talent.

He signs good players and they play sound defense.  It's ok to admit he knows what he's doing when it comes to defense.
