Cop fired.  Investigation underway, will be sent to DA.  Dude will need some sort of attempted manslaughter charge.

SAPD..prepare for lawsuits

Looks like a classic case of not being white enough and scaring the cop.

Scared the cop? Open and shut case, nothing wrong here! Thank goodness our police officers are allowed to protect themselves from such DANGEROUS people

I’ve eaten at that McDonald’s a few times, hits close to home.

Cop probably could’ve at least knocked on the window. If someone just opens my door like that I’m assuming I’m being carjacked. Kid definitely did the wrong thing by panicking and trying to flee, but teenagers do dumb shit. Cop said he thought he recognized vehicle as a potentially stolen one that had evaded him the day prior. He was at the McDonald’s for an unrelated call when he happened to see that car parked there. Still a pretty dumb way to go about it, that’s a busy intersection & parking lot, he could’ve killed someone else.

I'll give the cop 1 out here. If he knew the license plate was the same from a felony evading arrest. That is the only thing that will save his ass (shots downrange will be discussed later). Unlocked door was just poor situation awareness on the perp.

Did that cop say that he had identified a car that previously fled from him when he was calling in backup?  And then this kid dropped it in reverse when he was approached.

Dumbass had just called in a backup.  Wait for the backup, or why not block him in with your cruiser?  No, let's creep up on him and start blasting.

WTF?  Why did the cop approach the car in the first place [nevermind, I see the posts above]?  What was he trying to do?  And WTF was he doing shooting at a dude eating a quarter pounder with cheese who was driving away?  You don't get to execute someone for running.

Even if he thinks it's a stolen car, you don't get to just execute someone for running.  And yeah, the ONLY smart move is to wait for backup (dude was PARKED), block him in, and then approach from distance (maybe use your damn speaker).

"The officer reported that he was hit by the open door as Cantu started to reverse the vehicle. The officer then stepped back and opened fire on the vehicle as Cantu continued to reverse away from him. Cantu shifted the vehicle to drive and then turned away from the Officer to leave. The Officer shot several times at the fleeing vehicle and then ran after the vehicle. Cantu suffered multiple gunshot wounds, he was transported to University Hospital, where he underwent surgery. His passenger was uninjured. Cantu was charged with evading detention in a vehicle and assault on a peace officer."

You gotta be fucking kidding me.

why does he care?  It is not like they (non-cops) matter.

Maybe Cornpop was right about not eating his Whataburger in a dollar store parking lot.

A lot of people think that intersection is hood but I don’t really think so. Definitely a fair amount of crime around there though, and probably 2-3 homicides a year within a 2 mile radius. Very good Chinese place on the other end of that parking lot.

that officer is fucked.

Totally.  He's looking at at least 6 months suspension with pay, maybe even a year.  He's gonna be so bored.

ETA: Now I see he was fired.  That's something at least.

It's just an old area. I did stop there one time for my kids and saw some Churchill students inside wearing Gucci Bowl shirts for the upcoming Clark football game. This was probably 15 years ago and I remember looking around the area and questioning that "Gucci Bowl" name.

Union will probably get him his job back. But the fact he was still in his probationary period might make it a little harder.

that after-action report by the cop is mind bottling.

YOU WILDLY OPEN THE DOOR UNANNOUNCED, YELL AT HIM TO GET OUT OF THE CAR pointed a gun at him..... at no point in the entire interaction did you identify yourself as a cop, you dont say shit other than get out of the car....

and the kid panics because at no point did the cop tell him he was a cop, and he can honestly claim he thought he was being carjacked.......

the open door lightly brushing you, BECAUSE YOU FUCKING OPENED IT ILLEGALLY, and thats your justification to shoot the kid?

plus HOW IN THE HOLY FUCK did he resist arrest?  The cop never ID'd himself as a cop and the kid is getting away from a perceived danger.... which becomes actual danger when Barney Fife starts blasting away at a retreating vehicle that he has not confirmed is even a wanted felon.

Maybe the cop was afraid the dude was going to hit him with a deadly Big Mac?

Pretty sure I read somewhere that McD was testing a new Glock shaped burger in the SA area. Dude should be no-billed.

If we start giving cops only one cartridge in their sidearms, maybe they’d be a little more hesitant to use it.

unlike deputy fife, I’ll even let them keep it chambered.

Police chief denounced it. Said everything he did was against policy and training. Kid was a rookie with 6mo in the job.

Was he by himself?

or was his senior officer partner busy taking a dump in mcds or in the cruiser watching porn using the mcds wifi?

Smart move would've been to wait for another unit and block him in with their vehicles, but hey where's the fun in that!!

Or just post cops inside all the nearby restrooms, that he would surely be needing to visit within 10 minutes of eating his McDiarreah burger

Block the kid in for what though? The cop thought the car looked like one that tried to evade him the day before, so therefore the cop has the right to assault and accost anyone he thinks may be a suspect? What the fuck kind of shit is that?

It's scary how guys like that think they're actually smarter than everyone else.  His twitter feed is something.

He is a Comal county constable that apparently patrols the Canyon Lake area. Sounds about right.

Where in San Antonio was this?  What intersection?

Also, officer's second burst of shots...watch from his body camera position/angle...absolutely zero regard for firing background.  You know how no small children are ever leaving a a McDonald's...ever in the history of the restaurant?

Blanco/West Ave near Churchill H.S.

Shit, I probably ate their a few dozen times when my mom lived off of Blanco near 1604 and I would work at Coors on West Avenue inside the Loop.  That HEB right there had decent chinese food.  That sombrero rosa was where I discovered my love affair with quesadillas.

Noticed a few shady characters over there at night back in the day, but wouldn't expect something like this.

Anyhow, officer is lucky he didn't take out a driver in the background or some kid between two cars.

No shit? My mom and I went there while we were waiting to get my sister from Churchill on 9/11. Weird memory that's burned in of that Mickey D's.

Hey I never said the stop was even legal, I don't know. I'm just saying blocking him in would've been a better alternative than going John Wick on the guy.

something else I saw mentioned on the youtube comments is the kid truely had zero context that there was a cop in the area.

There were no flashing cop lights, the cops didnt block him in (which could have easily been done if Rambo had just waited for fucking backup), or if he had got back into HIS marked car and blocked the car in with lights on.

He just literally ripped open the door with no warning tap and said get out of the car.....   there was absolutely no chance for the kid to process that he was dealing with a cop.

all the yahoos saying he shouldn't have run from the cops seem to forget that its at night, the cop is wearing dark clothing (obvi), and the kid isnt able to get a good view because he is looking behind himself in shock after being ordered out of the car.   pretty much anyone in that situation is thinking this is some kind of carjacking.

And let's be accurate here. The cop did NOT say he "thought" it looked like the car. He said it "was" the vehicle that fled from him days before. So the cop had justification for making contact, he just handled it in the worst way possible. I hope he gets attempted murder, reckless endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and whatever else they can charge him with. Probably won't, but they should.

Is there video of that incident where the kid fled? I’m being sincere asking that question. Not a gotcha type question for either side.
