I’m on episode 7

It’s an okay watch. Whoever said it’s a higher budget NCIS is pretty close. Might be a cheap Homeland.

Greer is wrong. He’s way more political savy. I don’t mind Ryan but he’s not great.

I think what pissed me off the most was the drone pilot traveling to Turkey. No way in fucking hell would someone with his clearance be allowed to travel to Syria. Laughable. Once he booked the ticket, he would have gotten a visit from his superiors

You were disappointed with him in 13 Hours?  That was the movie that convinced me he could play these types of roles.  I'm two episodes in and he's doing fine.

speaking of which, will Without Remorse ever see the light of day as a movie?

I remember st one time, like over a decade ago, Keanu Reeves was being floated as Clark.

Best guess, since Paramount is making the Jack Ryan series and owns the rights, we will see parts of Without Remorse in the Jack Ryan series.  Or Amazon can spin it off into its own series. Will probably swap Vietnam with Afghanistan.

When he first started being featured, when he was shown as somebody in a leadership role/carrying some weight with Greer and the others, and when he mentioned that he was frequently changing his name, I was expecting some kind of reveal at the end of the season.

Haven't watched 13 Hours. The ones I have seen are Leatherheads and the one he did with Maya Rudolph. Wasn't impressed with either.

I’ve read the original books, although it has been decades. The last one I read was Rainbow Six. I just watched the series and you guys bitching about the books versus the show are a fucking cliche. Nothing was ever going to work for you. Get over it.

I see no way the CIA spook isn’t John Clark. They’ve set him up to be that guy. He works the part well, too.

For a first season, setting Ryan up, I thought they did a great job. They could have done more with background on him, but I don’t think they were planning on a one season arc, so they left plenty on the table for the future.

The story this season was entertaining. It had specific Clancy/Ryan elements, and that made it different from other shows. I can dig this show and also thoroughly enjoy StrikeBack and HomeLand, each as individual series with their own identity.

I look forward to next season.

There were definite Clancy/Ryan elements.

As for Clark,

Having not read the books, thought it was well done and quite enjoyable.
As miserable as book readers seem to be about everything, I'm glad I can't read.
"Hold on a gotdamn minute! Forrest went to space with a monkey, and piss was floating around the capsule, and then so-and-so kicked the hubcap with the lugnuts over the cliff, and Forrest told him he was dumb but not stupid, and book Jenny did not seem like the 'as you wish' princess, but Cersei's Uncle Remus could sing AND dance, and the elf from the Hobbit could never be Tom Sawyer, and I'll never enjoy this show/movie/novella because it insults me."

I thought it was more like the ghost written ones- at least Greaney's, which are pretty good.  To that end, I'm wondering why they didn't just make the show for Jack Ryan Jr. instead of Sr.  The timeline would be correct, as would the fact that Jr. is a financial guy who morphs into a field operative.  He also answers to Clark- who is a lot more like the TV show's Greer than the books' Greer.  The other characters of "The Campus" could have been written in seamlessly too.

As for the show, I liked it enough to have finished it quickly but only, I think, because I mentally dissociated it with the Clancy universe after a few episodes.  I knew when they set it current day that it wasn't going to be super true to the books but I guess I was hoping for something closer to what Amazon did with Michael Connelly's Bosch series, where plenty of concessions are made but the core personalities and story-lines are true to the novels and woven together nicely.

Expand

Agree with all of this. I like greany’s jack jr books a lot.  This show was solid. Could better and there really as no reason to change the backstory.  While Cathy had nice tits, that role was definitley mis-cast to me.

Watch it, it's good.  And yeah, Leatherheads was pretty bad.

In the books, he went to BC

In Hunt for Red October, they changed it to Annapolis, giving us this wonderful dialogue:

Admiral Josh Painter: You see that ring on his finger? The Academy, Class of '72. A Marine.

Captain Davenport: You're kidding! How did you...

Admiral Josh Painter: Greer told me. Summer of his third year, he and his squad went down in a chopper accident in the Med. Bad - pilot, crew killed. That kid spent ten months in traction, another year learning to walk again. Did his fourth year from the hospital. Now it's up to you, Charlie, but you might consider cuttin' the kid a little slack.

5 episodes in, enjoying it so far , but this could have been any generic CIA character. Greer is all wrong and don't care for the actress playing Cathy.

On a positive note, side boob in Ep. 2 was very impressive.

Concur on Greer but thought Cathy was fine.

Season 2 has been filming this summer.

Finished the season last night and would give the show thus far a C+.

Decent twist at the end but ultimately the writers continued to throw out Clancy’s dedication to realistic details in order to manufacture quasi-preposterous drama. This isn’t a fanboi being upset at minutea like The Beast having the wrong hubcaps or something; this is obviously and needlessly fake drama like:

Ryan: ”POTUS’s life is in immediate and imminent danger at this current location.”

Secret Service: “Agreed. Helicopter’s about ten minutes out so we’re gonna chill for a bit.”

Ryan: “OMG! The suspense!!”

All I’m asking for is a suspension of disbelief. That’s what any good story needs   Unfortunately, the writing room seems to be full of 15-year-old boys writing counterterrorism fan fiction.

I dunno how to spoiler shit so spoilers below:

IIRC, the terrorists IT guy said he’d actually hard-wired that receiving cell phone to the hospital’s landline. That convenient magic patches the plot hole you mentioned with the inept craftsmanship of an aggy engineer and, to my earlier point, is simply another data point of lazy, half-baked writing.

I’m sure Krazinski is a fine actor and all and he was great in ‘A Quiet Place’, but I still only see Jim Halpert in every movie or show he stars in.

Jim Halpert is fucking terrible in this and horribly miscast. He has one look, which is part sad, part scared. Abbie Cornish is fucking ugly. Her face and head are almost perfectly round. They are either hiding 250 lbs with CGI or she's 8 months pregnant. And again, she's fucking ugly. And Jim sucks at this.

The drone pilot story, I think, was part of the overall season theme that America can now rain down destruction on our enemies remotely without emotion or personal risk.   One implication was Suleman bringing the pain directly to our shores; another was the desensitizing effect of this new brand of warfare on our drone pilots.

It was ham-handed and poorly executed from that standpoint.  Overall the show was a good watch, but you have to overlook lots of bad writing.

I'm not saying it was well-executed, though.   Just the opposite, I thought there were a number of flaws and contradictions.
