I guess I’m thinking further west on Richmond, lived and worked in Westchase for a while and it was an absolute moonscape out there west of and for a good while east of the beltway.

Richmond on both side of the Beltway is a beast... but moreso on the west side.  Between Wilcrest and BW8 it is a rim buster.

Deputy Fernando Esqueda spotted the suspect's car, Lee said. Esqueda then "had a phone conversation with one of the other detectives to let him know he did have the suspect vehicle in sight," Lee said.

While on the phone, "our deputy apparently was ambushed" and shot multiple times, Lee said.

So confused.  I've seen this reported multiple times and it still doesn't make sense. How did the guy ambush the copper if said copper had the vehicle in sight? Where was the suspect?

Do you read what you post?  Those two classes are electives.

I bet you wouldn't feel that way if it were an elective on the Koran, or some other non Christian religious work.

Point being, this is literally the state respecting one establishment of religion over another. I'm not sure how you're not more concerned about the 1A violation, considering your previous zeal for that portion of our constitution

Doesn’t matter…. Public schools have no business teaching Bible Studies, the Talmud, the Koran…. Etc.

If you want your kids to take Bible studies send them to your church’s Sunday school. That is their business.

And it's beyond the scope of this thread, but the new Texas 3rd grade curriculum is explicitly teaching the Resurrection Story. It's so bad that the law to use the curriculum explicitly provides the educators immunity for violating the Establishment Clause of the US Constitution on the fifth page!

There is a very low chance that these schools will teach the Bible and not preach. Which is the guideline.

I was in High School (AISD) in the 80's and one of the books we read and studied in English class was Pearl S. Buck's "The Story Bible" (old and new testament).   Taught by a great teacher and we looked at the Bible from a literary and symbolism standpoint.  We talked about different versions and identifying different times/authors for different sections.

For those who were deeply religious I am sure there was a more spiritual connection than what we focused on, but the spirituality of it was not our focus.  Great class and great part of the class.

I am sure doing this would not be allowed today...on either end of the spectrum.

This has always been my view on those who fight to pray in the classroom. No one is stopping you from praying at home, on the ride to work, or even during your lunch break. Why do you need a minute at the beginning of home room?

However this battle was lost long ago as I assume Texas students are praying in the classroom every day instead of learning.

Don’t kid yourself.
I’d wager 99% of the students don’t even think about praying at public school.
And the 1% minority just indulge right before they start their final exams……or waiting for the hot teacher to bend over.

Ha. The number of people where prayer has helped on an exam is zero. You're better off re-reading one more paragraph before the teacher hands out the test.

I think some people benefit from taking a moment and centering themselves through prayer or meditation before a big exam. I don’t think divine intervention helps anyone with an exam or sporting event, but the act itself benefits some folks.

I was not aware that the government could provide immunity for violating the constitution.

Id prefer the government not violate the fucking Constitution. We aren't a god damn theocracy.

Also, not that it is relevant, but where are you getting "after school" from? As far as I can tell, this would be in place of other classes.

So you pulled it out of your ass? The article says elective school class. That's it. You're the one making the claim this is an after school only thing. It's on you to show some evidence. Given that this is a school board approving an elective, it seems pretty clear to me to be a during school thing.

This isn’t new. I took world religions class at a Texas public school prior to 2000. If you want to be outraged, read the law and state what you have a problem with.

First, it appears you've completely abandoned your made up claim that this is after school only.

Second, the Constitution prohibits the establishment of an religion. The government cannot adopt or show preference to one religion over another. Teaching world religions is perfect fine so long as you're focusing on facts and not theology. It isn't possible to tell from the information available how the courses will be taught. But I think courses that focus on one religion are inherently more problematic than courses that cover multiple religions. If our state weren't currently wrapped up in embracing Christian nationalism, I wouldn't be as concerned that something like this would be abused.

This is all compounded by the fact that at least one of the trustees, Blasingame, is in fact one of those Christian nationalists, doesn't believe in separation of church and state, and has campaigned on "getting Jesus back in the classroom". So yeah, I think some concern that not everything is on the up and up is warranted.

I love this thread. Goes from please mods don’t move us to the Cloak Room to a de facto Cloak Room thread within 1 page.

If the pop ads bother you, talk to @immamac, don’t purposefully drag your shit over here.

Can we please talk about something more interesting like Houston drivers running red lights or the new paper plates, “Please be Patient, Student Driver” bumper stickers?

Thank you all.

This isn't the thread to talk the policy but I did link the law a few posts up and pointed out my specific issue is that the signed law in the books explicitly gives the teachers immunity for violating the establishment clause. That's a pretty goddamn clear statement of intent.

Why do people in this town fucking suck so hard at parallel parking? You do not need to leave 4 feet on either side of you. Pull all the way the fuck forward instead of centering yourself between the cars front and back. If you are first or last, put your bumper on the sign.

I think stuff like this has been going on the entire time. When I was a kid in the 90’s, the YMCA had an after school program in our gym and it was a Christian organization. We didn’t study scripture, but there was prayer.

What does the YMCA have to do with public schools?

My only point was that I experienced teachers and volunteers encouraging prayer. It was technically after school but it was on their grounds and felt like a continuation of school as a kid. The line got pretty fuzzy.

When you're getting graded on it as classwork seems like a pretty bright red line to me

Texas Woman Found Engaging in Bestiality with Dog After Husband’s Arrest for Exposing Himself to Children

April 17, 2024 by Tom Henry

Joely, 53, and William Mitchell Keen, 52, were arrested on March 27 after dozens of disturbing photos and videos were allegedly discovered on his phone.

They allegedly included at least one video of Joely engaged in ‘multiple sex acts’ with the couple’s Great Dane – the world’s biggest dog breed.

Police uncovered the video after confiscating her husband’s phone after he was charged with indecent exposure on March 13.

The father-of-two, who goes by Mitchell, was caught masturbating while following children around a H-E-B supermarket in Spring, just outside Houston.

Further investigation led to him also being charged with indecency with a child by exposure – and the discovery of the videos.

The couple’s home was raided by heavily armed police and they were taken away in handcuffs while their two children, aged 18 and 10, and three dogs were rescued.

‘We don’t know what kind of environment they were exposed to on a regular basis. Maybe they weren’t exposed to anything. Maybe they were exposed to a lot,’ Montgomery County Constables Lieutenant Ken Washington said.

Mitchell is a former US Navy sailor and Joely a family nurse at nearby Total Men’s Primary Care until she was fired on Monday.

Joely was charged with bestiality and Mitchell with possessing fewer than 100 images of child pornography a third-degree felony.

‘Something comes up every now and again when you are investigating a crime. So when these detectives were going through this investigation, and they find the images and the video and the sexual acts – that’s extremely concerning.

‘But then you see an animal involved, which makes this odd.’

No need to shame their kink, bro.
