Re: Religion classes in public schools...

There are colleges out there that will require you to take a religion course or two.  In that context, for college credit, I have no issue.  The classes can be taught in a non-religious manner.  I have had such an experience at JUCO when I was contemplating going to Baylor.  It was in spring of 93 at MCC in Waco... there were some great discussions in that class about the goings on a few miles away.

2 dead, at least 35 injured after chemical release reported at refinery in Deer Park, officials say

https://abc13.com/post/deer-park-pemex-facility-is-emergency-situation-involving-life-flight-officials-say/15414117/

DEER PARK, Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities have confirmed that two people died and at least 35 were injured after a chemical leak at a Pemex facility on Thursday evening.

Officials with the Pemex facility at 5900 Highway 225 told ABC13 at about 6:18 p.m. that they were "dealing with an emergency" that began at 4:40 p.m., according to a statement issued hours later.

The chemical, hydrogen sulfide, is a colorless gas known for its pungent "rotten egg" odor at low concentrations. It is extremely flammable and highly toxic and can cause mild headaches, eye irritation, unconsciousness, and death-- even at low concentrations.

In a press conference Thursday night, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said authorities are working to learn if there are any more deaths.

Eyewitness News saw several ambulances responding and two Life Flight helicopters on standby. SkyEye was over the active scene while Harris County Hazmat Response crews were at work.

Pasadena and Deer Park officials lifted the city shelter-in-place orders after Harris County Pollution Control completed air monitoring in the area and no longer detected hazardous chemicals in the air.

Sad story but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere near that part of town. I’m less than 20 miles away and worry that is too close.

They just got blown up and burnt to a crisp by the O&G industry, and now they get a nice dose of poisoning.

FAA allegedly received reports 4 days prior that the tower light weren’t working. Not that it would have made any difference in this case, but getting on a 407 always made me uneasy, fuck a Robinson. Damned go kart engine and a rubber band. Nope

From the /r/Houston thread, apparently the lights on the tower have been out for some time - BUT - there was a NOTAM on file about the hazard. The NOTAM was last refreshed 4 days ago, but no telling how long it's been in place. Unfortunately looks at first glance like a commercial piloting fuckup, it's part of the flight planning process to check for NOTAMs along your flight path

Happened right down the street. In the ring camera video below looks like something was blinking before the crash

Jeeze that's haunting. But it's supposed to be lights going down the tower to the ground, not just one on the top. Either way, it doesn't matter because (it appears) there was a NOTAM in place about the navigational hazard

That's what I'm reading. Dont know a lot about these things but I would assume with all those guy wires that there should be a lot more lights

I used to think pre-flight checks were a bit over the top, but the longer I go the more grateful I am for them. There is a saying “3 to go, 1 to say no”; everyone on the crew reviews all information before flight and agrees to “go or no”.

If the pilot had filed this flight he would have seen any NOTAM or TFR’s. I’m pretty sure unless you’re flying IFR you don’t have to file a flight plan, so this was 100% preventable had a little extra diligence been done.

Also deserves to be said, the NOTAM system is pretty archaic and crappy and damn near impossible to read. It's still the responsibility of the pilot, but goddamn the FAA could make it less burdensome

I wonder how TEA let that slip through the cracks, don't you have to submit fingerprints and a background check as part of the cert process?

Mystery as Texas father is brutally murdered while driving home from working at NASA

A Texas father has been murdered on a freeway while he was driving home from NASA by a stray bullet - prompting a desperate manhunt for a suspect.

Robert Schorovsky, a 37-year-old Neo-Nazi, was driving his box truck near the 7200 block on the Gulf Freeway when he was shot by someone at about 10.30pm on November 2.

As a result, the victim lost control of his large commercial truck and ended up hitting two other vehicles before coming to a stop near the Woodridge exit.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries two days later. As of now, officials believe the incident was likely road rage.

'I think we're all in shock. It's been rough. One gunshot. There's no holes in the truck, no windows shot out. Just the one,' Schorovsky's wife, Brittany Ray told KHOU11

...

Schorovsky's obituary describes him as a 'hard worker and took pride that he could fix just about anything' and was 'focused on making and keeping his Brittany happy.'

'Robbie loved to spend time with the family and make lasting memories. If he was not working, you might see him down at the neighborhood pond fishing to clear his mind.

'There are many memories with the kids hiking, bike riding, and traveling that they will forever hold in their hearts. He was a hard worker and took pride that he could fix just about anything – including his white Chevy truck.

'His focus was on making and keeping his Brittany happy and would go as far as riding roller coasters with her even though he hated them. Robbie loved with all his heart and enjoyed helping those around him when he could.'

However, tribute pictures posted by a man named Gary Brewer on his obituary page show that the father of three had a full Adolf Hitler face tattoo on his chest.

The images were captioned 'Bolted for Life' and featured the two stark S's in the form of lightning bolts - suggesting he may have been a white supremacist and pro-Nazi.

A person was fatally struck by a train in the Heights area Monday evening, Houston police said.

Police received a call around 5:43 p.m. that a person had been struck by a train near Yale at Koehler, according to police.

Google Maps indicated disrupted traffic in the area, with closures on Shepherd and Durham, and heavy traffic on Patterson.

I got stuck in this yesterday. Pulled out of my office garage at 6:07, got home at 7:23. A trip that usually takes me ~15 minutes. Worst traffic I have ever seen on Washington in 6 years of being at this office. There were probably 15K cars trying to take Yale since every other North/South crossing in the area that goes over the tracks was shut down.

Those trains are the bane of my existence. Whoever decades ago decided not to put underpass/overpasses where the tracks cross Shepherd/Durham, Heights, and TC Jester should be tarred and feathered. Whenever there's a train stopped on the tracks, Yale is often the only option, and that intersection at Yale and Center is not capable of handling the overflow. I saw dozens of near wrecks yesterday evening.

Yeah. The limited streets over the bayou + the Washington RR make driving north-south a pain at times. Too many bottlenecks. We also need to eventually move more of the freight traffic out of central Houston. The perfect time would have been as part of the wider expansion of freeways but we can’t be bothered to be forward thinking.

the city should be working with the RRs to limit rush hour trains. I once asked council member Kamin about this. Her office only replied that the city can’t make the RR do anything. I was disappointed by the answer because good politicians should have other options other than force.

Several friends' wives in Tanglewood were freaking out over helicopter / manhunt last night.  Was at one of my law partner's house in that neighborhood for dinner and that shit was popping off for about an hour.  Cops and K9 were all over it, looking for a black male in a black hoodie.  Not sure if they caught who they were looking for.  But some excitement for a normally boring part of town.

Trains park on the tracks in the east end, blocking everyone for tens of minutes to hours. It's a huge problem for ambulances and firetrucks.

Had traffic court jury duty and someone parked a train across Houston Ave. as I was coming back from lunch, had to call the jury coordinator to let her know if be late because of it and she told me to go home.

The construction on I-10 just west of 45 prompted me to go to Allen parkway last night or I'd have probably been stuck with @Storm the Field

Stunning discoveries reveal Houston Housing Authority’s lavish spending

https://www.click2houston.com/news/local/2025/01/13/stunning-discoveries-reveal-houston-housing-authoritys-lavish-spending-habits/

“Thousands of people in Houston struggle to pay rent and keep a roof over their heads. The Houston Housing Authority’s mission is to provide housing for these families. However, ten months ago, the housing authority announced it was out of money to provide families with vouchers to help pay monthly rent. Davis wondered where the money went, considering the federal tax dollars involved.”
