Re: Religion classes in public schools...

There are colleges out there that will require you to take a religion course or two.  In that context, for college credit, I have no issue.  The classes can be taught in a non-religious manner.  I have had such an experience at JUCO when I was contemplating going to Baylor.  It was in spring of 93 at MCC in Waco... there were some great discussions in that class about the goings on a few miles away.

Why am I seeing so many Oklahoma license plates in the last month or so? Swear it's gone from once a week to 3 times a day.

Do we need to deploy the National Guard to the Red River?

2 dead, at least 35 injured after chemical release reported at refinery in Deer Park, officials say

https://abc13.com/post/deer-park-pemex-facility-is-emergency-situation-involving-life-flight-officials-say/15414117/

DEER PARK, Texas (KTRK) -- Authorities have confirmed that two people died and at least 35 were injured after a chemical leak at a Pemex facility on Thursday evening.

Officials with the Pemex facility at 5900 Highway 225 told ABC13 at about 6:18 p.m. that they were "dealing with an emergency" that began at 4:40 p.m., according to a statement issued hours later.

The chemical, hydrogen sulfide, is a colorless gas known for its pungent "rotten egg" odor at low concentrations. It is extremely flammable and highly toxic and can cause mild headaches, eye irritation, unconsciousness, and death-- even at low concentrations.

In a press conference Thursday night, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said authorities are working to learn if there are any more deaths.

Eyewitness News saw several ambulances responding and two Life Flight helicopters on standby. SkyEye was over the active scene while Harris County Hazmat Response crews were at work.

Pasadena and Deer Park officials lifted the city shelter-in-place orders after Harris County Pollution Control completed air monitoring in the area and no longer detected hazardous chemicals in the air.

Sad story but I wouldn’t want to live anywhere near that part of town. I’m less than 20 miles away and worry that is too close.

They just got blown up and burnt to a crisp by the O&G industry, and now they get a nice dose of poisoning.

FAA allegedly received reports 4 days prior that the tower light weren’t working. Not that it would have made any difference in this case, but getting on a 407 always made me uneasy, fuck a Robinson. Damned go kart engine and a rubber band. Nope

From the /r/Houston thread, apparently the lights on the tower have been out for some time - BUT - there was a NOTAM on file about the hazard. The NOTAM was last refreshed 4 days ago, but no telling how long it's been in place. Unfortunately looks at first glance like a commercial piloting fuckup, it's part of the flight planning process to check for NOTAMs along your flight path

Happened right down the street. In the ring camera video below looks like something was blinking before the crash

Jeeze that's haunting. But it's supposed to be lights going down the tower to the ground, not just one on the top. Either way, it doesn't matter because (it appears) there was a NOTAM in place about the navigational hazard

That's what I'm reading. Dont know a lot about these things but I would assume with all those guy wires that there should be a lot more lights

I used to think pre-flight checks were a bit over the top, but the longer I go the more grateful I am for them. There is a saying “3 to go, 1 to say no”; everyone on the crew reviews all information before flight and agrees to “go or no”.

If the pilot had filed this flight he would have seen any NOTAM or TFR’s. I’m pretty sure unless you’re flying IFR you don’t have to file a flight plan, so this was 100% preventable had a little extra diligence been done.

Also deserves to be said, the NOTAM system is pretty archaic and crappy and damn near impossible to read. It's still the responsibility of the pilot, but goddamn the FAA could make it less burdensome

At least two customers who gained certification through the ring were determined to be sexual predators, officials said.

I wonder how TEA let that slip through the cracks, don't you have to submit fingerprints and a background check as part of the cert process?
