I would also love to see the Forest Service put under UT/SFA and do away with the stupid Texas A&M Forest Service branding.  Let it just be the Texas Forest Service, like God intended.

If this could lead to that happening before aggy burns down the Bastrop pines again, I'd consider it a huge win.

SFA grad here. I think Tech is chosen, makes the most sense to me. UT has UT-Tyler up the road. SFA isn’t changing that name or colors and that’s prob a UT requirement.

If it’s aggy I’ll be pissed. I’ve already let powers at be know my thoughts on that BS. aggy is not too far from Nac anyway,

Tech makes sense to me because it puts an eastern chapter to them and it’s chancellor/president/whatever they call him is a SFA graduate.

I bet it will be Tech as well.    aggy is putting a lot of its resources in Tarleton State along with Tarleton’s new campus in Fort Worth.  Tech  brought on Angelo St a few years ago and they were not required to change their name.

Not sure if aggy would push the issue.   I was at A&I when the name changed and back then they were not crazy about giving up there name to A&I, CC State, and Laredo State.   But the local state politicians pushed it and they relented.     I think West and East Texas State requested name changes albeit at least West Texas kept some of its name .

So now we're bussing illegal insects and plants from Austin to Far East Texas?  The humanity!

I think the research lab and natural lands will stay but the graduate housing on either side is already gone...it just doesn't know it yet.  And then Muny, but that's a conversation for another thread.

But SFA, UT System, A&M System, Tech System...all this chatter does start rebooting conversations about why there isn't more inter-system collaboration between schools on research and initiatives to benefit the state.  And the simple answer is because we have too many fucking systems (and by that, I do not mean sybian porn).  You have Texas State and A&M System go off and do something together...you get Tech and UNT Systems all pissed off, along with their associated legislators.  UT and UH Systems want to collaborate on some urban initiative to benefit Houston, Dallas, Austin, then it's seen as blue urbanist elitist bullshit.  UNT and UT-Arlington and UT-Dallas wanna do something with the metroplex, you get Tarlton State all butt-hurt.  We're doing some work on a coastal preservation initiative and you gotta get UT-RGV, A&M-CC, UT-Austin Marine Sciences Institute, the myriad colleges in Galveston, et. al. all on the same page and every fucking local politician with ties to his/her alma mater wants a piece too.  It's batshit.

I love to bag on California as much as the next guy having lived there and gone to school there, but their two System heads get a project decree, they issue orders, and they are executed upon to a tee.  And they generate insane wealth and benefits from it.  Texas higher ed systems can't collaborate on a fucking forestry preservation program in East Texas without 7 Aggies fucking it up.

I didn't realize until today that of U of H was the flagship of its own system. Why the fuck do we have so many separate systems?

Because all that bureaucracy, redundancy, overhead, and baked-in inefficiencies are completely in line with our maverick, limited-government Texana, dammit!

Texas leadership continues to defend the idiocy with, "Well, we need 7 systems 'cause Texas is a big state with lotsa land."  Well California ain't much smaller than we are, they have just 2.  Montana is pretty damn big, they just have one.  Alaska is twice the size of Texas and gets by with one.  And then they say, "Well no, I mean Texas has so many people...we need 7 systems!"  Well New York has almost as many people as we do, they get by with 2 systems.  Florida is catching up to us in population, they get by with 2.  And again...California.

It's a fucking racket.  The amount of real estate, executive compensation, and overhead that this redtape pile of crap costs our state...it's a fucking crime.  I know no Red Raider wants to be rolled up with a UH Cougar...but get the fuck over yourselves.  We're literally pissing away billions in our "fiscally conservative" state.

Part of it is because Texas cities hate each other almost as much as they hate other states.  To understand the rest, just listen to any statewide elected official speak.

The answer is football and pride. They didn’t want to be under the thumb of UT or aggy because we’d slash their budget or trying to keep them down so they could compete with us on the football field. Dumb but true.

Texas and aggy and maybe Tech (due to the isolation of West Texas from the I35/10/45 triangle) all made sense at one point. But UNT, UH, TWU, TX St never really did. Texas State system became the default aggy should have been and now with technology there really isn’t a need for Tech to be on its own either. I honestly hope that UT moving to the SEC and the SEC/B1G’s elevation to power 2 status would finally allow some sense to start trickling in.

UH’s campus (omitting Victoria) and Tech’s Lubbock campus and their med centers could join UT.

UNT, Texas Southern, and UH Victoria join aggy.

The rest get tossed into Texas State.

Agree with most of that, except Tech should maintain independence in West Texas, in my opinion.  A different system there makes geographic and cultural sense.  Ultimately, I'd love to see aggie rolled back into the UT system where they belong (and forced the change their name for the lols), leaving Tech and UT as the two systems and dividing things up geographically.  Aggie has proven over and over again that they will do anything to undermine the success of anyone else.  Fuck them.  They should be brought to heal.  I could see Tech as a partner, but never aggie.  (I know none of this will ever happen, nor will merging any of the other systems with maybe one or two exceptions).

I appreciate your zealousness.  We'll never get down to 2, but we could certainly survive Monday morning with just 4.  UT, A&M, Texas Tech, and Texas State.  Easily.  Wouldn't skip a beat.  Roll UNT, UH, and the Independents into the other 4 systems and voila---efficiencies and better educations galore.  get it done by the end of the decade.   Then draw down to 3 systems in the 2030's.  But nope, "Our state is special and unique and different...in fact..........we need more additional systems with billions of dollars and waste!"  I promise you, we'll have an 8th system before we have a compression.  Because we're such "mavericks"!

This would be worthwhile just for the entertainment of their reaction to becoming UT College Station.

I disagree with you that Tech needs to remain a system with how interconnected we all are with technology. UT has UTEP and UTPB already, Tech would fit in just fine. Regardless, I doubt it happens anytime soon, but if this was a compromise, I could live with it.

Yep, I agree, 2 is a pipe dream (mostly because aggy sucks and doesn’t play nice or give a shit about their system schools. I’ve always thought 3 would be the final with Texas State being the default but they basically had that years ago but then let this whole thing spin out of control at some point.

This might actually work.

"Ya see, what we did was just have UTIMCO stop sending them their 1/3rd portion of the PUF.  After A&M System stopped receiving money, they just kinda shut themselves down.  No need for confrontation, these things work best when they work themselves out naturally.  Studies have statistically shown........"

Alum here as well. SFA actually has a pretty campus, I’d hate to see what aggie would do to it

I slept underneath a truck one night on SFA's campus. Was on a road trip, got separated from my buddies because I left the party with a female I met there and went to her dorm room. Her neighbors apparently later tattled on us to the RA, and I had to sprint out of the building while gathering belongings. Found the group's car, couldn't find anyone, slept underneath the truck next to it. Got woken up the next morning by a buddy, made me jump, and I set off the truck's alarm by slamming my forehead into the under carriage. Painful ride back to Austin that Sunday, but worth it.

But yeah, pretty campus.

I work with some good looking women that went to SFA. I guess I'm cheering for Texas to "win" for these reasons.

What is the justification for the Texas State system I've seen some throwing around?  Is it just that you went to school there?  Maybe I'm missing something but they seem to be near bottom of the barrel of the systems, and should be rolled into UT if anything.

It’s a very loose system that gives lots of local control to the individual institutions. UT and aggy typically require branding changes and have to be mindful of system geographic and program overlap. It’s just a good catch all option, nothing special about it.

  • 3 weeks later...

SFA’s Board of Regents created a subcommittee to study all four proposals. On November 29, the Regents will meet to hear the subcommittee findings and receive their recommendation. I’m praying to god they go with the UT System - I’ve read all 4 and it is by far imo the best to position SFA moving forward.

There is an interesting side discussion in the UTRGV thread on the football board about the differences between UT and TAMU systems and their treatment of TAMUK and other branches.  I hope they pick UT as well.

Is there a cliff notes of the differences?

Probably because the other schools don't care to pray at the altar of a dead dog.

Mostly it’s because the A&M system is primarily designed to benefit College Station. If there is anything noteworthy about a campus aggy immediately starts working on how they can move it under the main campus. They invest very little in their other campuses because they don’t value them. They are simply there to funnel status, money, and ideas to CS.

The best thing to happen to the TAMU system schools is UTSA and UTRGV starting football. Thanks to aggy’s constant inferiority complex with all things UT they decided to start investing in a few A&M system schools moving up to higher divisions so at least some funds are trickling down.

Meeting tomorrow.

Financial proposals available at https://www.sfasu.edu/docs/board-regents/financial-proposal-values-summary.pdf

Summary of funding appears to be:
UT: $124.3 million
A&M: $33.7 million
Texas State: $7.4 million
Tech: $357,000

Knowing the good ol' boy network they prob chose A&M and walk away from nearly $100m just not to "austinfy" deep east Texas.

Either Tech or TX State adding UNT and Houston would be a solid system.

But if UT is really serious that they want it they will get it. They have the lege pull I would think
