Didn’t really see a thread and didn’t want to hijack the Linda thread.

post anything regional here, but a lot of my friends / family had issues voting due to lack of paper, so I found this article interesting/concerning.

Harris County Elections administrator can't answer why polling locations ran out of paper

Quote

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Some Harris County voters went to cast their ballot on Election Day but left their polling location frustrated and puzzled.

“At 3:30 pm., they told us they ran out of paper, out of ballot paper,” said Sharon Gahunia, who tried to vote at the Mandarin Immersion Magnet School in the Galleria area.

“First time I ever ran into a problem like that trying to vote,” added voter John Knoerzer, who was turned away at Shadow Forest Elementary School in Kingwood.

More people need to early vote. Waiting for Election Day is just asking for trouble / waiting in a long line

harris county has 700+ polling stations, and is a huge area. If there’s an issue, it’s take a long time to get anywhere

Paxton convinced the Texas SC to not count votes cast by folks who relied on the extension of voting hours in Harris, but, it is unclear if Bell County was also ordered not to count ballots cast during their extended hours.

Honestly, didn't see this posted elsewhere and it could have gone in the Paxton criminal thread, or the sexy AF Lina Hidalgo thread, but I searched around and opted for here.

https://www.texastribune.org/2024/04/09/texas-harris-county-guaranteed-income/

Paxton is suing Harris Country because of a pilot program, which they are implementing with federal money, to give 1900 underpriveleged families in the poorest areas of the county $500 a month for 18 months to test for the tenets of UBI. The money came from leftover Covid Relief funds, and was title Uplift Harris.

Some choice quotes:

Paxton blasted the program in a legal filing Tuesday, calling it an “illegal and illegitimate government overreach” and dubbing it the “Harris Handout.” Paxton argues the pilot program violates a section of the Texas Constitution that says no local government can “lend its credit or to grant public money or thing of value” to individuals.

Houston residents broadly support the idea of guaranteed income, according to polling from the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University. More than 75% of respondents to a 2023 Kinder poll said they support a “universal basic income for low-income, working adults.”

The party of SMaLl gOvERnMenT once again stepping in to stop that which was overwhelmingly passed and supported by local government and citizens.

Read about this earlier and he says something about "“The Texas Constitution expressly prohibits giving away public funds to benefit individuals" rich coming from the guy who wanted public funds to pay his 3 million dollar lawsuit.

This federal money too, this guy is a huge asshole crooked to the bone

Example number eleventy billion of Republicans being against using government funds or services to help anyone--except for people and organizations that are connected to them.

Even so, this is an alarmingly crass and cruel example of those in power punching down. Despite years of this shit somehow I still continue to be surprised at the depths these shitheels will sink to. They literally have no shame.

Also a good point. San Antonio and Austin have similar programs as well.

Government shouldn’t pick winners and losers unless it’s keeping the price of electricity artificially high so that our donors can make billions on the backs of the people of Texas!

If the money was going to a bunch of Southern Baptist churches for “community outreach”, Paxton wouldn’t say a word.

Yeah, farmers and ranchers sure don't mind their subsidies.
