We went to Potente with another couple this weekend.  We had a bunch of different things and they were all outstanding.  Here is the run down:

CAST IRON SEARED DIVER SCALLOP

PETITE SPAGHETTI AL TARTUFO NERO  w/ white truffles and an order with black truffles

BAYOU CITY CHICHARRON

SALMORIGLIO GRILLED BEEF

I know I must be leaving something off, but I can't remember what it was.  All of the above was delicious.  We sat at the bar and watched the President's Cup.  We followed it up with a couple of frames at the Lucky Strike downtown.  It was a fun little Friday and Potente was excellent. I would highly recommend stopping in one evening.

Edit:  I remembered what the something else was, but I can't find it on the menu.  It was a panko crusted seafood "ball" which came in an order of four with some sort of orange-ish sauce dripped on the plate.  These may have been the best things I ate all night which is really saying something.

Rainbow Lodge. I’ll give them credit for having balls and moving out of the current Brenner’s on the Bayou location. They saw the potential of Greater Heights before many real estate developers did.

That said their Wild Game Mixes Grill is a shadow of Brennan’s and Hudson Bend (RIP). Game usually needs a nice sauce. To lightly season it, grill it, and serve it on top of grits doesn’t work. Very bland, lean meat.

The Friday Burger is pretty good. Elk, bison, and ribeye. Good to great duck gumbo. They do quarts of gumbo to go for $18. Very reasonable lunch and happy hour menus.

One pet peeve: parking is valet only. I get that they have a small lot, but this bullshit is an Inner Loop money grab city wide. There’s no reason to do it during non-peak hours.

That was a question Houston Press Editor-in-chief Margaret Downing and I struggled with after my visits to KUU. In January 2010, former restaurant critic Robb Walsh decided that it did upon going to the now-closed Branchwater Tavern and finding every single space in the parking lot coned off. His answer was to run over one of the cones and go inside anyway, despite the protests of the valet. His response: "Call a tow truck, I'm going in the restaurant."

RIP Branchwater. I think we usually walked there.

Clark’s is great little restaurant in the Montrose. But of course, it’s valet only. I parked way in the back of the lot, out of sight from the valet stand. Sure enough, I’m walking into the restaurant and some valet runs up to me and tells me I must give him my keys and take a ticket. I just left.

I parked in a little ditch at Rainbow Lodge on Friday.

Moral of the story, fuck valet only.

Little’s is way better than Clark’s and you can self park there.
