Cadillac to enter Formula 1 as seventh power unit manufacturer in 2028

General Motors will enter Formula 1 as a power unit manufacturer in 2028, the American car manufacturing giant announced today.

It will produce a unit built to the new power unit regulations Formula 1 is due be to introduced in 2026, branded as a Cadillac.

The manufacturer also reaffirmed it is only prepared to enter F1 in conjunction with the new team entered by Andretti Global. Andretti’s planned F1 team was approved by the FIA last month but is yet to agree commercial terms with Formula One Management.

“We are thrilled that our new Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit,” said GM president Mark Reuss. “With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team.”

The arrival of GM will increase the number of power unit manufacturers participating in F1 to seven. They will compete against Ferrari, Mercedes, Honda, Audi, Renault and Red Bull-Ford.

“We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world,” added Reuss.

The American manufacturer made the announcement ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which is the newest addition to F1’s calendar and the third round to take place in the United States this year.

Reuss stressed GM is “committed to partnering with Andretti to race in F1.”

“The collaboration between Andretti-Cadillac brings together two unique entities built for racing, both with long pedigrees of success in motorsport globally.”

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem welcomed the news. “This is a further endorsement of the FIA’s PU regulations,” he wrote on social media. “The presence of iconic American brands Andretti and GM is good for the sport.”

Oh geez.  I can't look at that picture close enough or long enough to make that determination.  But with a fearful side-eye with blinders on, you might be right.

Yep. Only as a partner to Andretti.

In all of this, we don't even know that Liberty (Malone, Maffei) don't want Andretti/GM to come onboard. We just know that some of the teams have lobbied them publicly to not allow the entry. To me, the teams vocally, publicly lobbying Liberty/FOM suggests that they're very insecure about their position and think there's at least a decent chance that FOM will allow the entry.

And of course, allowing the entry makes all kinds of sense for FOM. Like I've said for a long time, I think this is what's happening and FOM will allow the entry in the end. But wewillsee...

Wait, what?  I don't follow Formula1 as close as you do but I don't get this reference.  And I've had hot cocoa with the Osmonds.

Greg Maffei and John Malone love money.  Andretti and Cadillac will bring them a lot more money.  I'd be shocked if FOM did not allow them in.

Toto has banned all Mercedes team members from going to casinos while in Vegas.  He is not a fan of gambling.

So if Hamilton or Russell said, "nah, I'm gonna go throw some money down on craps" what exactly would Toto do?  He's got bigger fish to fry.

Exactly. That's why it's never made sense for them to be opposed to Andretti, and it's probably why we've never heard them say anything to that effect.

For those that know the history better... take the top 10 cars/drivers from that era and the top 10 cars/drivers from this era and race them on the Caesar's track. Would a new era car or an old era car win there?

Seems like the size of new cars would be a major hindrance to working around a track like that.

I wonder how long it's going to take for them to get the Strip to operating relatively normal?  We are going to Vegas next Saturday and I'm hoping the main casino entrances will all be open again by then.  I'm guessing it's going to be a big priority for them all.

I thought much the same thing about the size of the cars. In 1982 the cars were about 172 inches, (14.3 feet) long and about 84 inches (7 feet) wide with a wheelbase of 107 inches (8.9 feet). The cars now are about 220 inches (18.4 feet - think Suburban) long with a wheelbase of 141 inches (11.75 feet). They are not as wide as in 1982, 84” to now 78.7 inches.

A full week?  I expect you'll be fine.  I definitely agree, it'll be a big priority for them.  I'd imagine the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend usually brings in some extra travelers.

Yep & I think the weight of the new cars would hinder them even more than the size. These current cars are pigs in slow corners, which is what that old track overwhelmingly was composed of, and they excel in medium to high-speed corners, which that old track has very little to none of. I think on that track, the old cars just might win. Maybe even easily.

I don’t understand. What are the red circles with the little white dash?

Are those indications to avoid the area due to traffic tie-ups? NM. Texas08 answered it for me while I was posting.

I'm hoping it pushes the service workers over the edge and they strike so I don't have to go the following weekend.

Why are they doing the race so fucking late?  Is it so Europeans can watch during the day?

I think so, yeah. They wanna run the race at night to show off the Strip. Understandable, and it would generally look pretty shitty in the daytime anyway, but they could accomplish that starting even 3 or 4 hours earlier this time of year. They say F1 needs this race to be a success to crack the US market, but they didn't set those times with the US market in mind. IMHO that's for the casinos to market Vegas to Europe. If the casinos don't want this race, it does not happen.
