World Cup Final - Argentina vs France

Captain Ron

Recommended Posts

Argentina look the better side going into the match but hard to bet against any team that has Kylian Mbappe. Truly a matchup for the ages but I will go with Argentina. Messi finally has a national team squad that look up to the task of helping him win the World Cup.

3-2 AET, Enzo Fernandez winner.

I was rooting for Chaos, Croatis v Morocco, but, instead I will root for France to win a great game.

I've never been in the Southern Hemisphere. I have been to France many times. I have driven past the stadiums in Lyon & Nice and been on the train right next to PSG's stadium.

I reckon that is enough reason for me.

There’s a possibility that I got a last minute miles flight to Buenos Aires that goes into Newark tonight and out JFK tomorrow night.

Hello Newark!

Hello Manhattan!

I'm a bit confused. You are heading to the game? If so, awesome.

It is your duty to provide pictures of the lovely ladies inside the stadium.

I’m headed to Buenos Aires to watch the game either with friends or in one of the big fan zones where tens of thousands of people watch together on a jumbotron.

If we lose, it will be a bummer, but there won’t likely be as much violence & destruction near the obelisk as there was in 2014 because…

When the game ended in 2014, it was mid-July (equivalent of mid-January in the northern hemisphere) and although the temps were mild (upper 50°s to mid 60°s), it was already dark.

In 2022 the game is 3 days before the summer solstice and kickoff if at 12pm local time. (Fortunately there will be a cool front, so temps won’t be in the 90°s.)

Rain would be a bummer.

——————————-

I will also see many friends for the first time in 5 1/2 years. I will also eat ice cream, steak, amazing “Jamón y Roquefort” empanadas with filo dough from El Cuartito, while also drinking copious amounts of Malbec, Fernet y Coke, and hopefully my friends pre-bottled gin & tonic concoctions.

Gotcha. I thought you were going the other way, from Argentina to Qatar, for the game.

Safe travels. Did you stay at the TWA Hotel at JFK last night? It’s pretty cool.

You've been to France and you don't want to root against them?  France is beautiful and has some of the best food and art in the world, but the people are assholes.

Back when Swine Flu hit Buenos Aires in about 2009, my flatmate (Lesbian Jewish girl from North London who had an affinity for Chinese tomboys) and I were talking about the whole mate thing where normally it is no big deal to share mate with a coworker with a cold sore (a.k.a. “herpes”).

Anyway, she had been teaching kids one day, filling in for someone, and she asked the kids how H1N1 / Swine Flu / Infuenza Porcina could be spread.

Some of the kids guessed the touching of hands, a few others actually sharing mate, but none of the kids guessed that you could no longer safely kiss every person you see on the cheek.

Argies aren’t the smartest knives in the drawer.

Interesting news coming out of the French camp. Benzema is healthy. He wasn’t replaced on the roster, so he would be eligible to return.

I already think that France should be favored by a 2 to 1 margin without a Ballon d’Or level player coming off the bench if they somehow find themselves stymied.

Where is Jeff Gillooly when you need him?

There is no way Benzema plays. That would be so stupid.

There are a few things to the story:

FIrst - Benzema is not even in Qatar, but back in Madrid training with RM.

Second - He has been cleared by the club for full training and play, so he could return to Qatar and play for France.

Now that being said, he came out on Instagram with statement that said he would not return to play, so it becomes a moot point.

Now I absolutely agree that Benzema has business returning/playing. The team has their stride, he would destabilize it if he returned.

Having been to France many times, and never having an issue with them, I can say they are some of the best people in the world. If you think they are assholes, you either don't know or aren't really trying while you're there.

Either way, Go Argentina. I'm pulling for Messi.

My exact experience as well. Zero issues, and really a shit ton of fun to hang out with.

Some sights of Buenos Aires…

Large artist drawing a chalk portrait of Messi on the pedestrian section of Avenida Corrientes (El Obelisco is in the distance of the second photo.)

Festive decorations in the Carrefour Express as the slightly plump girl in front of me waits to buy a bag of frozen French fries in her fake Messi jersey.

And ad for something with members of the team.

A much more interesting ad on the street for something… probably female skin.

One of many famous Generals on horseback. (This one happens to be Gen Alvear, whose son was the first mayor of what is now known as Buenos Aires and whose grandson was a president.)

And what I got for changing US$200 with my buddy’s friend who works for the National Congress. (When I arrived in 2007, the official exchange rate was US$1 to AR$3.1. When I left I late 2014 it was US$1 to about AR$9, but the street rate was about AR$15.)

Yesterday the official rate was about US$1 to AR$172, but we got US$1 to AR$318.

in 2007 I would have changed my US$200 for AR$620. Yesterday I got…

😳 AR$63,600 😳

My Argentine buddy hasn’t been back since 2019 (he’s married to an American and lives in the U.S.) and he couldn’t believe how ridiculous it was either.

Word out of French camp that giroud took a bad knock in practice and hurt his knee pretty bad. Along with the flu going around the team, seems like god is intervening on Messi’s behalf.

If Giroud did go down, then as not ideal as it is, that’s a strong vote for putting Benzema in if actually available.

fucking fuck.

Well they were missing 5 dudes even before the cup started. Benzema, Kante and Pogba just amazing how deep they are

Their early talent identification and youth development is the reason why they are kicking so much ass as well as several other countries.

France produces way more talent than they can play and that has made several other countries better due to dual nationals.

The US is only about 30 to 40 years behind France.
