A man's lot in life is not a binary choice between being an Andrew Tate caricature or being the Obama pajama boy meme.  A successful, functional male, who has a good place in society, falls pretty close to the middle of that spectrum.  But "be a decent human being, put in the work to improving yourself and living a life of self-discipline, self-respect, and respect for others" doesn't sell bullshit seminar tickets or books.

Expand

Your average Obama pajama boy meme guy does pretty much all of that. Sure, he may suck at defending himself from being mugged but that's hardly a moral failing. The rest of your post is right but I don't think it's helpful to present these options as two opposite extremes.

I used the meme for hyperbole.  And yeah, I gotta be honest....the typical "pajama boy meme" guy doesn't know how to change his own tire, use a cordless drill, etc.  Yeah, yeah, stereotypical "manly man" stuff.  But also skills that give you some pride in a job well-done, the ability to problem solve, etc.  But yes, plenty of guys who sip tea in flannel pjs are also good hard workers, decent men, etc.  Again, used the meme for ease and hyperbole.

Maybe what's more important on that end of the spectrum is young men who aren't making themselves enticing to women.  Dudes with no decent job, no ambition, playing video games and developing no social skills or marketable skills....but they're still young horny male with all normal desires and hormones etc.....they're going to end up frustrated and resentful because women don't want to date that guy.  And those guys may be outwardly macho posers, pathetic pocket protector nerds, or any number of other "types."

Our primary education system is geared towards girls who sit there with bright and shining faces, don't squirm in class, etc., instead of movement-oriented boys.  College attendance is now 60-40 female to male.  Young men have few real rites of passage, exercises to help them become "men," etc.  They have unrealistic expectations about what a relationship with a female looks like based on pop culture, porn, etc.  They fall into lazy patterns (as opposed to learning the hard work of self-improvement and development that often comes with those "rites of passage"), so they don't put the work in to develop real social skills, learn to dress, put in work to be successful, have ambition and goals, etc. (I was a young man once - I remember well the impetus to be a lazy shit instead of putting in the work).

And to take it back to the topic, the Andrew Tates tell them what their lazy asses want to hear: it's not your fault, girls are bitches, and you should just show them who's boss and fuck them as you wish.  Which is destructive across the board to every segment of society.  There's a whole lot between "be a simp and make your needs and desires subservient to those of women" and "treat all women like your property/whores."  Andrew Tate, Jordan Peterson, and their ilk are peddling poison.

Great post.  And note how our incels have likewise become prone to terrorist-type violence now.

Honestly, we need a concerted and realistic effort to reach and communicate with our young male population in an effective way.  And, to take a moment for my tone to tilt the other direction, that effort needs to be driven and led by MEN.  Because many of the "let's address male behavior" solutions that come from a feminine perspective end up amounting to "let's tell them to be more like girls, and sit still in class and pay attention" and whatnot.  The real challenge is that there IS a kernel of truth in what the Jordan Petersons of the world are peddling: the "solution" to challenging male behaviors is not to feminize men.

In general (and we must speak in generalities here), men are the more sexually aggressive gender, they are more geared towards kinesthetic activities and learning (think team sports), they take pleasure in some measure of violence/breaking shit (think football, or playing with fireworks, or driving fast).  Telling them "don't feel that way or do those things" is a recipe for repression, frustration, and failure.

For example, accept the fact that men are going to be more sexually aggressive and seek out sex more than women will.  Channel it.  Teach them that they can BOTH indulge their desire to connect with women AND be respectful to women and their needs and wants.  In fact, if they channel it WELL.....they can have even MORE satisfying intimate relationships with women.  Which has the dual benefit of both satisfying the typical male's needs AND offering women the opportunity to be in emotionally and physically satisfying relationships as well.

Also, show them that if they'd like to be a sexually desirable partner, that goes hand-in-hand with developing social skills (be clever and funny - I did quite well with women over the years, and it's not because I was gorgeous or rich.  I mean, I am NOW, but that's beside the point), and with having some ambition and achieving material and social success (shocker: most women are going to be more attracted to a guy with a decent steady gig).  And guess what, fellow dude?  You'll feel better about YOURSELF if those things are true as well.

But that "movement" (which doesn't seem to exist at the moment) needs to be led by other men, by and large.  And we need to make it clear that guys like Andrew Tate aren't just assholes, they're actually the very thing they claim to loathe: they're f'n pussies, because they are afraid to engage with women and society with respect, and as equals.  If you are only comfortable engaging with someone else when you have a huge imbalance of "power" on your side, you're a coward, and you actually aren't that powerful at all.

The problem is that the best men to do that are just normal guys in local communities that want fuck all to do with becoming Youtube gurus/cult leaders.  As more and more of childhood has shifted to being online, the chances to interact with positive male role models has diminished.

I don't know that there's a solution to that. The best male role models don't want internet fame; if they did they'd be shitty role models. Maybe we could try to convince more men to get into teaching kids so at least they'd have some more role models in schools, I guess, but that certainly wouldn't solve the whole problem.

I know even less about Pederson than this Tate guy (thanks to this thread), but isn't the Canadian a philosophy professor or something like that?  How is he connected to incels and this mouth breathing idiot?   I assumed he was just a typical academic talking nonsense over people's heads so he could smell his own farts better.

He puts an academic patina on what's basically the same shit Tate pushes.  If you'd like to know more, here's a brief explainer on him (don't check the video length):

It’s a bit more than that. Which I am sure you understand. I can’t find the essay online, but Michael Ventura wrote about this last century, and warned that our lack of such events were societally dangerous. Rites of passage are not equivalent to nutting. They might have involved real, or perceived, deadly consequences. Scary, masked figures taking a knife and cutting foreskin, and whatnot. That’s the language societies evolved to address young men. I think Ventura was right in warning of the cost of having no such demarcation event.

Andrew Tate used to cruise along these scruffy suburban streets about 10 miles from the centre of Bucharest in Romania. Past a litter dump and a sprawling cemetery and a line of semis that wouldn’t have looked out of place on the TV soap Brookside. Rolling by in his Lamborghini or Bugatti or any other of his fleet of supercars. Puffing a cigar and adjusting his Michael Corleone sunglasses. Beating his tattooed chest at the red light.

Tate, who likes to call himself Top G (in street slang G stands for gangster), says he’s done nothing wrong. He might look and behave like a gangster. He might have boasted of gangsterish pursuits and claim to have made billions. But now, as a current guest of the Romanian penal system, he says he’s not an actual gangster at all. He says he’s a good guy.

Expand

  Quote

His arrest on 29 December by armed members of Romania’s anti-corruption unit – the ones who arrest gangsters – was over allegations of people trafficking and rape. Officers wearing balaclavas stormed Tate’s compound by cover of night, and say they found guns, knives and large sums of cash. Top G and his younger brother, 34-year-old Tristan, were led away in handcuffs. Two Romanian women, Georgiana Naghel, and a former police officer called Alexandra Luana Radu, were also detained. The four are suspected of being part of a human trafficking group, although they say they are innocent.

I’m on my way to Andrew Tate’s home. I’d never heard of Tate until last summer. I usually cover wars, international crises, old-school corruption. Tate sounded like another self-obsessed attention screecher on social media. “He’s not,” said a colleague. “He’s one of the most Googled people on the internet. He gets more views on social media than Rihanna. Oh, and he told a Twitch Stream that he’s the world’s first trillionaire.”

Expand

  Quote

But how could that be true? How does a former kickboxer from Luton convert notoriety on social media into his claimed Musk-scale wealth? And more pressingly, for Tate at least, what will the Romanian investigators discover about his money-making activities? If he is found guilty, he could be detained in a Romanian jail for the best part of 20 years.

Andrew Tate is a social media phenomenon. His content on TikTok has been viewed more than 12.7bn times. No one else on the platform comes close. He claims to have mastered the social media algorithms that sends posts ripping through cyberspace like a plague. He is a master of buzzwords, hashtags, soundbites and inflammatory language.

there's also the harsh reality that many dads who stay in the picture are pieces of shit.  35% of Texas men look up to guys like Andrew Tate, Joe Rogan, and Elon Musk.  They're gonna pass that shit onto their sons, no matter how robustly they stay in their kids' lives.  One thing I'll take away from the 2010's is politics aside, so many 'alpha' males I know picked the weirdest fucking idols to look up to as pictures of masculinity.  Don't want to tread into CR territory here, but seriously...the weakest fucking men became the symbol of all that is man to so many guys I know.  It's fucking sad.  Dad or not dad, Texas chose poorly.

I get it, but exotic cars are pretty bad ass and typically indicative of some type of success. I can see some of the allure with Tate, depending on which steam you were getting bombarded with (apparently algorithms delivered mediocre things to some, and downright misogynist garbage to others).  I can’t believe anyone ever took Peterson seriously.  My favorite part about that entire article was how his compound was really a pos in a pos area.  Worth 300m, but lives in industrial district with faux brick paneling? …OK.  Also, lol at the casino shit being fake.

Was just talking with the boy, catching up on his life at college and whatnot. Their dorm arrangement is sort of a shared flat sorta thing: private bedroom and bath, shared kitchens and common area. His flat is 5 people, one of whom brood to himself, but the other 4 (2 guys, 2 girls) has been pretty tight. Until a week ago. The other guy comes down and bangs on my son’s door - “DID YOU JUST KNOCK ON MY DOOR?” “No, dude…I’ve been sitting here working on one of my essays.” “I KNOW IT WAS YOU.”
Long story short, that dude is now giving everyone else in the flat the silent treatment, won’t help clean the common areas, etc. He’s having absolute fit over…thinking someone knocked on his door but didn’t own up to doing it.
As the boy is explaining this, he then says “the thing is, he’s one of those Andrew Tate apostles.” I tell him “oh, I get it” (wife looks at me asking WTF?). The boy goes on to explain that it seems he thinks that all confrontation has to be handled by “being an alpha,” but when it’s a stupid and pointless confrontation, that puts you in a stupid bind.
What the fuck? What’s wrong with an ethos of “just be a decent dude; that doesn’t mean being a pushover, just be decent?”

It’s sadly happened to some my friends IRL, but I’ve long given up on trying to reason and simply don’t see them anymore…not necessarily because I may disagree with their views, but I’ve got enough stress in my life without listening to someone rail against or hate ‘others’ while drowning themselves in self pity.  I’m getting too old to humor that shit.

Your son sounds like a fucking pussy and a nerd (extreme sarcasm)

I've been thinking of how to deal with this when it eventually happens to my sons, how to de-escalate a situation or walk away "taking the L" from some situation where the other party is all aggression and no substantive defense or argument. It's so much easier as an adult because you can just remove the person from your life pretty easily, even if you work with them there are solutions. As a school aged person or young adult it's a lot more difficult because you can't just walk out on class or group or your flat lease or whatever there are so many more forced situations you can't just walk away from with absolute control.

The flip side of this is also true. Bunch of people on the right hated him because he was the face of the EV movement and was going to put a lot of O&G types out of work. Then he pwned a few libs and now the right loves him...despite the fact that Tesla is still producing EVs and the reason they hated him to begin with is still there.

  • The common area (living room and kitchen) are barren apart from the trash and random food particles...  he's the only one that cleans (but not much) Animals
  • But there are Nazis and radical Christian sects on campus that try to confront students and get them to react for social media...  One harasses you while the others film it. So kinda Andrew Tate-ish? / Alpha male fantasy stuff

My advice to him is walk away no matter what they say.  If you're in a class group with any of these types just laugh at them and dismiss them. Don't take the bait.

Also on his agenda, I told the boy to learn to fight if all else fails.  He's got a black belt from one of those kiddie Tae Kwon Do outfits when he was young, but I don't think he can fight well.   The thing he has going for him is he's a coach on the Rock Climbing team and the boy is ripped.  I don't think the average meathead would make a point to test him.

Scary sending your kid off into this world.  When I dropped him off for his first semester driving home a million things went through my head that I hadn't taught him about.
