the 2023 speaker of the house voting thread of implosion

For all our polarization, this is not a “both sides” problem. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi managed to have a successful record of significant and often bipartisan legislation with a similarly narrow Democratic margin in the House.

The problem predates Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s 269-day gauntlet of shame. Since the anti-Obama Tea Party revolution of 2010, every Republican speaker has ended up abandoning their post or being pushed out because they could not corral what former Republican House Speaker John Boehner called the “knuckle draggers” and “anarchists” in anything resembling a constructive direction.

TLDR: The GOP is broken and needs to kick out the MAGA types if it wants to get back to governing, or change up the MTV to be more than just Matt Gaetz and run a candidate who can pull in enough Democrats to overcome the Gym Jordan/Matt Gaetz wing of the GOP.

Catturd will fall in line like the rest of them once the latest version of this shit show resolves itself.  Doubt anyone divorced three times has any commitment to any position very long.

Jordan and Friends want revenge.  They will not seat a Speaker that is anywhere even close to being considered "moderate", which means that we have no Speaker, or we get a Speaker with some Dem support, in which case Gaetz/Gym immediate MTV.

There are enough Jordan supporters who have publicly made sure everybody knows they support Jordan, to prevent anybody winning that they don't like.

Assuming someone wins with the help of the Dems, wouldn't those same people vote with the Dems to keep the MTV from passing?

If we do eventually wind up with a bipartisan speaker election, it will be a durable simple majority with far more R than D votes. That's why the Jeffries scenario isn't a win. You have to have Republican votes, which necessarily means a Republican speaker. They are the majority, after all.

Just so you know … The Republican Party sold you out this week for their big money donors - then they mocked you on X after they did it.

These cocky narcissists hate you. They think they’re better than you.

They deserve nothing from you going forward …

Not your money.

Not your support.

Not your vote.

They sold you out with a smile on their face then took the weekend off.

I’m absolutely done with these cowards. I’m not kidding, I’m over them. You?

They would need to immediately change the MTV threshold, otherwise Gaetz will live up to his promise of constantly using it, which would have the benefit of disrupting Congress.  Gaetz and the others pushed for it to be the way that it is so that he can disrupt whatever major legislation he wants (and/or try and create government shutdowns).

I'm not sure the Democrats are handling this correctly. They have a lot of power right now, and they only need a handful of Republicans to come along.

The Dems are handing this absolutely fine. Never interrupt your opponent from making a complete ass out of themselves.  Jefferies becoming SOH for this congress would be a complete disaster for them.  Suddenly blame for all the disfunction lies at his, and the Dems feet if that were to happen and without an actual majority, the chances of getting anything meaningful completed is close to zero.  Sit back, let the chaos ensue, then  squeeze a few concessions at the end, but under no circumstances assume the speakership until you flip the House.  That is the ultimate goal.

Lemme tell you what the modern-day Republican Party is about. It's all about this cooze who's a regular fuck machine, I'm talking morning, day, night, afternoon, dick, dick, dick, dick, dick, dick, dick, dick, dick. Then one day she meets this John Holmes motherfucker and it's like, whoa baby, I mean this cat is like Charles Bronson in the 'Great Escape', he's digging tunnels. Now, she's gettin' the serious dick action and she's feeling something she ain't felt since forever. Pain. Pain. It hurts her. It shouldn't hurt her, you know, her pussy should be Bubble Yum by now, but when this cat fucks her it hurts. It hurts just like it did the first time. You see the pain is reminding a fuck machine what it once was like to be a virgin.
I wish i could rep you again for the correct amount of dicks.

I know people hate x- but if you scroll down the replies, there are all of these glorious RINO trading cards. Some asshole has come up with cards where they shit-talk about anyone who voted against Gym.  No matter what, there is a certain percentage of asshole GQP voters who will be mad at the people Trump’s toadies says are RINOs. Which means they probably won’t vote for the people that Jordan is attacking and will vote third-party or stay home.

Straight. Into. My. Veins.

I mean even their 80's synthesized stuff wasn't my jam per say; but it was anti-Russia, pro-Space, predictable regulatory systems, and their collaborative projects with Tip O'Neill and 'socialist' NATO allies was pretty good stuff.  Plus the head of the party met with Michael Jackson and Harry Caray (I was at that Cubs game).

But yeah, when VH1 does the "Behind the Music" starting around 2011-2016...it's gonna be the ultimate, "Ronnie, tell us about the dark years..."

I can't emphasize enough how much I hate this guy (let's face it, I hate all of them).  Why?

Read his statement.  It's either a lie or a perk for him that somehow you get to take part in, but with no benefits.

Well santos was the Setter of the House for Baruch College Volleyball.  So Speaker of the House makes sense as the next position by rotation.  Oh wait, Spiker of the House.  Shit, I meant Server of the House.  Dammit; I had something for this.

I guess these goobers all fly back to their homes every weekend and then back to dc, on our dime?  Or stick around at a fancy dc hotel, on our dime?

we should build a dorm, or take over the trump post office hotel, and make them stay there when congress is in session.

Yes. That one MN rep had proposed a 5 week on-1 week off calendar to prevent that stupid shit. I’d make it so if they want to travel back within the 5 week legislative periods, they pay for it themselves or wait until the 1 week off

The notion of getting rid of MAGA GOPs as though they are just the screaming idiots in Congress is hopelessly out of touch.

There are screaming MAGAs who, like Trump, are yelling the quiet part out loud.

There are non-screaming MAGAs who want to go back underground returning to the cynical, empty platitudes of law & order, fiscal conservatism, and worldwide respect. They'll still be getting the votes now identified as MAGA because their quiet platform remains bash the gays and terrifying transexuals, keep the negroes down, go full Aggy on identifying all the hateful things about the Dems (compassion, environmental concern about the people, pro-republic) as things nobody wants to be.

Collect massive funding and bribes from actors hostile to the republic both native and foreign.

In short, return to the shining days of shameless abuse, greed, and treason.

They used to stay there during the whole session - it was part of why Congress functioned more effectively. They all lived in the same boarding houses and hung out together. Now they have to go home and do fundraisers constantly because the campaign never stops.

I like the Republican Party's early stuff. You know, 'Tax Cuts', 'Small Government' -- but once they got into their 'Donald Trump' phase, I don't know, I tuned out.

I am all for efficiency, so I back that, too. Saying Republicans are for tax cuts just means they benefit from exploding budgets. I support both social security and Medicare, and I also am wary of the financial instability the national debt represents. I acknowledge the need for a strong military while also believing it is the military budget that needs painstakingly rational scrutiny.

The batshit crazy I blame on football placing the ball on the 25 yard line after a touchback.
