The Official 118th Congress 2023-24 Thread

From a detached standpoint, the conflict between Ukraine and Russia is teaching the US crucial lessons about contemporary warfare. Not to mention it provides us with logistical operations training and we’re sending over older equipment to be replaced by new.

When we send over $50B, most of that is being returned to the American defense industry.

now should we also be pushing for a ceasefire? 100%.

In a phrase, the Ukraine is not as much our problem as Europe's.  The US does not have a responsibility to address crime, genocide, etc around the world.  Especially if we can't pay for it.  If the EU wants to step up and help their neighbor, then they can go for it.  I feel the same way about NATO.  Every member should pay in it in proportion to their GDP, rather than the US carrying the load.  Now if we can get rid of the welfare freeloaders here and generate some free cash, then let's talk.

The US, just like every other country in the world, does have a responsibility to oppose aggression. And we actually signed a treaty to oppose genocide so I am not sure what basis you have to say we do not have the responsibility to address genocide when we do.

In any case if the worst the isolationists are going to proscribe is a matching program, that works for me.

ah yes, the noted reason for why we can't supply aid to Ukraine is because of the *checks notes* welfare queen problem in this country.

it would be sad if it weren't so funny. or is it the other way around? it's dumb either way

also, I still think there should be a 1000 post threshold to post in this forum. when I'm king!...

Sorry Dan.

Quote

What happened: House Republicans have picked Rep. Mark Green (R-Tenn.), a Freedom Caucus member, over Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) to lead the Homeland Security Committee.

Green, who first came to Congress in 2019, said he would place some staff members permanently on the southern border in part to provide "real-time updates" from Customs and Border Protection.

He vowed to conduct aggressive oversight, but also pledged to work in a bipartisan way with Democrats on committee priorities. "Americans really want to see us working together. So you'll see legislation that works for, first, our constituents, and then there'll be a lot of bipartisanship too," Green told reporters after winning the race.

...

An early goal will be getting Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to testify, though Green conceded staffing up the panel would take a little bit of time. "If we in that oversight discover that it becomes necessary to remove someone, we'll hand that over to [the Judiciary Committee]. That's their job," Green said. "We all know the border is not secure."

The decision of the House Republican Steering Committee caps a fluid race for the slot that saw members enter and leave the race over several months. But the field eventually winnowed to just Green and Crenshaw, both veterans. "Part of this accomplishment is being his friend and beating a tough guy like Dan Crenshaw," he said. "I mean, it was not easy."

We can pay for it, and it’s extremely cheap. Neutering Russia without the US shooting one shot or losing one soldier is a big F’n deal

1000 times this.  We are able to watch real time footage of our mid-level tech vs what Russia is throwing out there.  This intel is priceless. Plus all the munitions that will have to be rebuilt here on home soil maintains/creates a lot jobs.  I mean, if we are going to keep the Defense budget what it is, it makes complete sense to keep supplying them arms and tech.

That Earl Halfwit negged a post pointing out that -- empirically, not as a matter of opinion, but as to ACTUAL NUMBERS -- he's a fucking dumbass.  Don't want to be called out as a dumbass?  Here's a helpful hint: don't be a fucking dumbass.

Loving the neg of that post from.....a poster who joined 8 minutes ago, and has zero posts.

Yeah, we're not dealing with trolls here at all.  Nope, just regular old posters, with legit viewpoints.

At least it gave me a chuckle at the end of the day.  Troll didn't even bother to try to establish some posting history with a dozen "yeah, great shot!" posts on the basketball board or some shit.  They're just getting lazy now.

Doesn't welfare do exactly that, essentially generate "free cash"? For every $1 spent on welfare, it creates $1.XX in economic activity.

I'm sure @XXX or @Earl Haffler is busy preparing a thoughtful, well researched retort that rhymes with "nanny nanny boo boo farts poopy pants."

Well, this Congress is off to a fine start.  They gutted the House Ethics Committee and passed a bill rescinding the money for the IRS.  For those Republicans that bleat about fiscal conservatism, that alone raises the deficit by over $100 billion, so you should shut the fuck up already.

Well that would need to pass the senate and be signed by Biden, yes?

Also, as to the bolded......the Troll earns this gif:

Because, umm, as of the last figures (about 45 days ago)......guess what?  The EU, as both the EU entity and as its member nations plus the UK (so, including non-US NATO nations) has spent a good chunk more than the US in aid to Ukraine.  The US was at about $51 billion.  The EU, member nations, and the UK? Around $57 billion.

And as a percentage of GDP?  Where do you think the US ranks among nations that have contributed to Ukraine?  TENTH.

So, congrats, troll -- the US is ALREADY following your "the US shouldn't fund more than the EU does" plan.  In FACT, we have room to EXPAND our support.

You fucking dumbfuck trolls are bad at everything, including math.

One rage+1 from a cycle.

“Bills appear by dark of night; bills that nobody’s read that are thousands of pages long,” said Representative Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the majority leader. “Today starts that process — of fixing what’s broken in Washington so that Washington can finally start working for the people of this country who are struggling.”

Smoke and mirrors.. didn't last long

the full extent of concessions Mr. McCarthy had made to appease the hard-right rebels was not yet fully known. Details were trickling out in the hours before the scheduled vote, and some lawmakers expressed doubt that they would ever know the entirety of what the speaker had privately promised.

Quote

Many of the concessions — such as allowing the party’s right wing a critical bloc of seats on the panel that decides which bills can be considered on the House floor and which amendments may be offered — were not included in the package that passed on Monday, but instead were approved in closed-door negotiations with a handshake agreement.

Since you don't pay attention to what the Russian government promotes to the Russian people on the official Russian state TV channels, here.  This is Russian state TV trying to drum up support for all kinds of batshit actions.  And over the last 11 months, they've spent a lot of time justifying not only the February attack on Ukraine, but additional attacks on neighboring countries, including NATO members.  We can help stop them in Ukraine, or we can wait until they are in Moldova and are massing troops in Belarus to go after the Baltics.
