How the fuck did we miss Hot Wheels signing this into law last month?

We will have to do age verification.

Gov. Greg Abbott has signed legislation that would restrict access to sexual material harmful to minors and require age verification for online porn sites.

House Bill (HB) 1181 was authored by Rep. Matt Shaheen (R-Plano) in the House and sponsored by Sen. Angela Paxton (R-McKinney).

The proliferation of pornographic material online has raised concerns from some parents in Texas as it becomes increasingly easy for children to unwittingly come across sexually explicit content online.

The new law will require a website that intentionally publishes “sexual material harmful to minors” to verify the user’s identity through digital identification or a third-party verification system that uses government-issued identification. Websites found in violation of the law will be subject to fines and penalties.

A website, including social media platforms, whose content is more than one-third sexual material will require virtual identification. Said sites will also be required to post on their landing pages multiple “Texas Health and Human Services Warning” notices about the addiction and other mental health problems associated with viewing pornography.

TEXAS HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES WARNING: Exposure to this content is associated with low self-esteem and body image, eating disorders, impaired brain development, and other emotional and mental illnesses.

This is the group behind it.

https://americanprinciplesproject.org/legislation/gov-abbott-signs-law-protecting-texas-kids-online-porn/

Quote

Today, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed HB 1181, which mandates that porn sites implement age verification in order to prevent children from accessing adult content. Texas is the seventh state to pass legislation protecting kids from online porn, joining Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Utah, and Virginia.

American Principles Project (APP) was involved from the start in the effort to enact this law in Texas, working with state lawmakers to introduce legislation and providing expert testimony at the State House. For years, APP has been an advocate for age-verification mandates for porn sites as an obvious and popular policy solution to address the growing issue of kids’ access to pornography.

APP President Terry Schilling released the following statement celebrating the signing of the Texas law:

“The vast majority of Americans agree that we should not be giving children access to online porn. And yet, while we’ve managed to restrict kids’ access to alcohol, tobacco, and gambling, until now we haven’t done the same for adult content. Unsurprisingly, this has had disastrous consequences — a recent study found that children on average first encounter porn at age 12, with other research showing the damaging effects that regular porn use can lead to. This is nothing short of a public health crisis.

“Fortunately, state leaders are finally beginning to act, including those in Texas. We thank Gov. Abbott and state lawmakers, particularly Rep. Nate Schatzline and Sen. Angela Paxton, for making the protection of children a priority this legislative session. Keeping kids away from online porn should be a political no-brainer, and we urge other states, as well as federal lawmakers, to address this issue as soon as possible.”

Fuck all these people trying this shit. I can’t believe this has passed in other states.

I had joked that it was being tossed around in the legislature, but fuck me, I did not think it had a chance.

Texas is racing to the bottom just as hard as it can.

"Small Government".

Edit: I give the religious nuts credit for not broadcasting this as loudly as they could have.  Come September 1st, a lot of Texans are going to be shocked/pissed off.

Political party of freedom!

Tbh, is this the first republican legislation in history that targets white dudes more than anyone else?

Since the law leaves it up to the websites to do this many of them that aren't based in a state where one of these idiot laws has passed won't give a shit. Ones based outside the USA will give zero shits. And ones that actually do follow through will do the bare minimum that's easily subverted with a VPN.

Honestly, if you click through to online porn you should already be using a VPN by now anyway.

It leaves them open to financial penalties which is why some of the larger ones are bailing on affected states completely.  Far easier/cheaper to just completely block a state.

Absolutely (and you should be using the privacy modes that some browsers offer, etc., etc.), but I have had so many instances of having to clean up computers of older relatives over the years who went to shitty porn websites.  Most people are still not good with even the bare minimum of securing their computers/visiting shady websites.

Did it.  And it's funny, since most of us here should already know how to use VPNs.  If there was one group that would have no problem with this, it would be college football fans.

VPN. Could even use a free shitty one to get around this but really in this day and age a good no logs vpn should be as important to internet users as the internet service itself.

I absolutely fucking cringe when I see friends who have no problem looking at sketchy sites (whether adult or sports streams with a bazillion ads/pop-ups) or torrent sites or whatever on the same browser/OS that they do their banking or email or whatever on.

Of course, now that I think about it, they are the types that would visit some third-world country and probably bang one of the local prostitutes with no protection as long as she/he assured them that they were clean.

Edit: The worst is cleaning up the computer of a older relative that I may have to give a eulogy for some day.  I have to fix/clean his computer every 2-3 months.  I'm sure he'll ask me how to help him upload his ID on September 1st.

You don't understand. Eufemia said she wasn't interested in money, and that she loves me. It's not her fault she needed help so her uncle wouldn't lose the family toad farm. Yes I helped her, you'd help her too if she smiled at you and called you "mi cajero automático" like she does. It's Spanish for "true love."

Wait, Texas wants to tack on a more stringent bill than current Federal law?  But i thought that was bad and what the last shitty bill hot wheels signed was supposed to combat, but at a state level.  You know the one where big cities could not enact policies (like mandated water breaks, min wage, time off etc...) that went above the state statute.

fucking hypocrites.

That ain't happening either.  I will tell you this, the 'vice squad' as I call the right, has already pushing me away.  I have traditionally voted for them as the cheaper criminal.  That's hardly true any more either.

Better start downloading and saving it where you spouses or kids can't find it (get a decent cloud-synced note-taking app that's encrypted to store your best stuff).  Or Just use a VPN.

Or build up your collection of mail order catalogs.

Spoiler

I might go with 1960s Montgomery Ward

Or 1970s
