James Gunn's DC Universe

He revealed his upcoming projects. It will be a mix of live action-TV shows, animated series, and films. They will be in a connected universe. Things like the Joker and existing movies are Elseworlds. Some of these could be great like The Authority, The Brave and the Bold (Batman reboot), and Booster Gold. The Authority could be really good but it might feel a bit like The Boys in its brutality. Waller should be good as it carries on with familiar ground for him and Viola Davis is a badass. Others I'm not too sold on like Paradise Lost and Swamp Thing. And are we sure it's a good idea to anything related to Supergirl and Green Lantern after the previous efforts were so bad? I'm sure he can improve upon them. GL at least seems like it will be a more serious take on the character as it's described as True Detective like. His track record is pretty good so I'll tune in. His Superman film will be the real tell because that's not really a character I see his style merging well with.

Pretty good breakdown here:

In for the animated stuff. Recently watched Battle of the Supersons. Will probably be the best DC movie of the year.

oh man for the last literally 30 years (DC Animated Universe/Timmverse + DC Universe Animated Original Movies) has been the best DC stuff released there is a ton of great movies to watch out of that universe.

The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 and 2 is truly fantastic.

It was fun watching him try to link upcoming projects to previously successful HBO shows

Like GOT but with wonder woman

Like True Detective but with green lantern

I hope it's entertaining, but only time will tell.

Like blue balls in your heart but with Superman.

Batman Year One is my favorite.

Son of Batman is also good. Damian is an asshole.

Also wish they would do a full length Jonah Hex animated film.

I like Gunn and I am hoping for the best as a comic nerd, but I was pretty underwhelmed with these announcements. And only half rebooting the original failed DCU while also setting up a scenario where you have two different versions of Batman and potentially three different versions of the Joker appearing in concurrent film series seems like a really bad way to restart your cinematic movie universe. His vision for video games doesn't really sound feasible to me either. That said, I'm looking forward to his take on Superman.

Part of the reason I have Max is so I have access to the full WB animated back catalogue

Well, she's at least as ugly as Margot Kidder IMO, so maybe it'll work.

Well there were guys who dug Margot Kidder and those who didn't. Those that fall in the second category are referred to as gay in modern times. NTTAWWT

I was a Marvel fanboy growing up. Got a king sized issue of X Men when they decided to kill them all off an replace them with new mutants. It's dog eared and has my name stamped in it so my comic book trading friends wouldn't rip me off. According to the interwebs if I wasn't 6 years old at the time but instead being in my 30s and living in my grandma's basement and shrink wrapping shit it would be worth $2,000 which I could definitely use but naw.

That being said Marvel movies these days are teh suck. The Flash was good even though it starred a cult leader/child molester. Watching the new Aquaman movie and it isn't too terrible either

Their personal dynamic, which originally took a leap forward around 2016 in comic book canon, has been at the forefront of the R-rated animated series Harley Quinn, in which Ivy played a prominent role in Harley’s journey of self-discovery. Their romantic relationship is just one part of the complex union between them, and that is something that has never previously been explored in a live-action project.

Make it NC-17 and print money.

I'm very interested in this because I've seen that Gunn isn't going to "Gunn" this out. He really wants to make an authentic Superman movie that's more about hope and the best of humanity. Also saw he was inspired by Top Gun: Maverick's camerawork on the flight scenes and decided to use something similar when Superman flies.

I re-read post#1, but I haven't been paying attention for the past couple years.   Is this a reboot/fresh start of a new universe, or is it connected (in the same universe as) something already out?

As far as I know it is a complete reboot. All superheroes will be new people. I think maybe Blue Beetle is the only one they’re holding onto. Oh and probably the Suicide Squad since Gunn directed the sequel. That's why the Wallen show was announced.

For me, DC movies for the most part have been so bad story-wise outside of the Batman movies... it would have to be an amazing teaser trailer to make me want to see this in the theater.

The Arrowverse stuff with Superman was kind of interesting - they did Crisis on Infinite Earths across all of their shows and even had Brandon Rough’s Man of Steel take. I loved the comic from the 80s, so it’s kind of on my radar to watch (but just the crisis stuff, not the entire with if the Arrowverse).

Is that from the TV series with Green Arrow and Flash, etc.? I kinda enjoyed those before stopping... and then before I knew it, there were so many episodes and it got a bit soap opera-ish, and I didn't know where to pick back up.

Yep. Extremely audacious. Even had a Kevin Conroy and Ezra Miller.

Heres the episode to watch to prep but it’s a lot

And this is the actual Elseworld episodes and then Crisis episodes

It’s daunting but I’m still intrigued because it was so bold for the CW to do.

That was better than anything in any of the Henry Cavill Superman movies.

For the record, i thought the Man of Steel trailer was incredible.  The actual movie, not so much.  But the trailer was badass.

I like Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. He can play a smarmy asshole really well like in The Menu. And comic appropriate Guy Gardner is hilarious. I wonder who Sean Gunn is playing. My only critique is Clark doesn't look like a farm boy from Kansas but I believe this is a drop you in the action story and not an origin retelling. The shot where he saves the little girl from the exploding helium tanks looks great. What is the giant thing in the night sky? They already did Starro.

I thought Cavill's Superman was fine, it was just the fuckery going on at WB/DC that was the problem.  They wanted to spin up their own cinematic universe without putting the time into world building like the MCU did.

Thankfully for them, even if the Arrowverse TV shows and the Snyderverse movies aren't a part of this, a lot more people are now familiar with these characters so they can arguably skip a lot of origin stories.

Given the current leadership and what they've done with their channels and animation divisions, I'm a bit concerned that unless this makes a bazillion dollars (it should) that Gunn will find himself micromanaged by the Powers That Be to hell and back with future projects. Maybe they realize that this is their last chance and are willing to let Gunn swing for the fences, but I still see them fucking over some of the things that made WB what it is.

Yeah, if we're rating trailers, Man of Steel's blows that one out of the water. That seemed like pure comic book schlock. But he's obviously targeting that audience, so who knows.
